Overview
  • Hoopa-U is one of the most feared offensive threats in Almost Any Ability due to its monstrous 160 / 170 offensive stats coupled with a diverse movepool, allowing it to break through the majority of walls in the metagame.
  • Its Psychic / Dark typing also gives it great coverage with its STAB moves alone, enabling it to target common Psychic-, Ghost-, and Fighting-type threats. It also grants it an immunity to Psychic-type attacks, offering it more opportunities to switchin.
  • Abilities such as Tinted Lens, Sheer Force, and Hustle enable Hoopa-U to break through its checks depending on its set, making it even more difficult to counter properly.
  • Hoopa-U also possesses great natural special bulk, meaning that it can provide some defensive utility on offensive teams by being able to switchin versus threats such as Gengar, Mega Alakazam, and Latias.
  • Its physical bulk is rather poor however, disallowing it from taking even neutral hits all to well, especially in conjunction with the defense drops from using Hyperspace Fury.
  • Hoopa-U's Speed stat also prevents it from threatening offensive teams as much unless it holds a Choice Scarf, meaning that threats such as Landorus-T, Greninja, Terrakion, and Victini can easily revenge kill it.
  • Its typing also makes it weak to Fairy- and Bug-type attacks, leaving it susceptible to defensive threats such as Tapu Fini and Magearna alongside common coverage moves such as U-Turn.

Moves
  • Hyperspace Fury is an incredible Dark-type STAB attack due to the fact that it can never miss. Meaning that it effectively negates the accuracy drop from Hustle while still gaining the Attack raise, allowing Hoopa-U to break through a plethora of defensive walls in the metagame with ease. It also has the added factor of bypassing protection moves and Substitute, leaving Hoopa-U even more difficult to check properly.
  • Drain Punch compliments Hoopa-U's STAB coverage well, since it enables it to target resists such as Tyranitar and Mandibuzz for more damage.
  • Fire Punch is a great coverage move that lets Hoopa-U dent specific Pokemon such as Magearna and Cobalion which can otherwise stomach its Dark-type attacks.
  • Trick is used to cripple incoming defensive pivots that rely on their item to pose a threat such as Gligar and Skarmory. Psychic can be used as an alternative to catch physically defensive walls such as Hippowdown and Buzzhole off guard, potentially enabling it to achieve the 2HKO and OHKO on them respectively.
Set Details
  • Tinted Lens is the chosen ability as it lets Hoopa-U break through the majority of walls in the metagame due to the lack of sure switchins into its STAB attacks.
  • A Choice Band is equipped to augment Hoopa-U's wallbreaking capabilities, 2HKOing most threats in the metagame with Hyperspace Fury bar extremely bulky walls such as Intimidate Buzzhole and Hippowdown.
  • EVs have been maxed out in Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature to boost Hoopa-U's wallbreaking capabilities, while still letting it outspeed as many threats as it can.

Usage Tips
  • Hoopa-U will be spamming Hyperspace Fury most of the time due to it possessing great offensive coverage in tandem with Tinted Lens. Its coverage moves can be utilized to hit specific targets that resist its Dark-type attacks such as Magearna, Buzzhole, and Tyranitar, but the immesne power behind Hyperspace Fury compensates for the aforementioned threats in the majority of cases.
  • Hoopa-U should be utilized as an early-game wallbreaker, helping its teammates by weakening down their checks in order to secure a potential sweep by other offensive partners near the end of the game.
  • The Defense drops from Hyperspace Fury can attract Pursuit users such as Weavile and Bisharp from OHKOing Hoopa-U if it switches out, meaning that it must be wary from spamming Hyperspace Fury when facing the aforementioned threats.
  • HoopaU's frailty on the physical side often encourages the use of VoltTurn support from its teammates to bring it in more frequently, since it cannot switchin versus the majority of physical attacking offensive threats.

Team Options
  • Hoopa-U should be paired with other offensive wallbreakers such as Noivern, Thundurus, and Latios that can help break through bulky physical walls like Buzzhole and Mandibuzz, while Hoopa-U can break through specially defensive threats in return.
  • Teammates that can provide momentum such as Magearna and Landorus-T are also extremely useful, enabling Hoopa-U to come in freely without it fearing to severely weakened. The aforementioned partners also resist Bug-type attacks, meaning that they can come in on U-Turn as well.
  • Entry hazard setters like Diancie and Hippowdon provide useful utility by aiding Hoopa-U into obtaining important 2HKOes on certain defensive threats such as Intimidate Gligar and Skarmory.
  • Setup sweepers such as Tapu Fini and Volcorona also appreciate Hoopa-U's capability in denting specially defensive walls, while the former example can help check Dark-types such as Weavile, and the ladder can threaten offensive teams with Quiver Dance.

Moves
  • Psychic is a powerful STAB option in conjunction with the boost from Sheer Force, enabling Hoopa-U to dent every neutral target for incredible amounts of damage. Psychic becomes more spammable if paired with Tinted Lens as well, targeting resists such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory for more damage.
  • Dark Pulse is a complimentary STAB move which also gets boosted by Sheer Force, allowing Hoopa-U to hit Psychic- and Steel-types that resist its other STAB attacks such as Meloetta, Victini, and Doublade.
  • Focus Blast is a great coverage move alongside its STAB attacks, targeting threats such as Alolan Muk, Tyranitar, and Excadrill.
  • Thunderbolt can be used instead to lure in Pokemon such as Mandibuzz and Azumarill.
  • Fire Punch rounds off Hoopa-U's diverse coverage, specifically letting it have the chance to OHKO Magearna after Stealth Rock chip damage.

Set Details
  • Sheer Force amplifies Hoopa-U's damage output, letting it commit volatile damage versus numerous targets thanks to the great amount of coverage moves it possesses that get boosted by it.
  • Life Orb is equipped to strengthen Hoopa-U's attacks and also works well in conjunction with Sheer Force, letting it avoid the recoil damage taken after performing an attack.
  • EVs have been maxed out in its Special Attack and Speed with a Naive nature in order for Hoopa-U to deal the most damage as possible, while also letting it outspeed as many threats as it can, while taking the least amount of damage from physical attacks.

Usage Tips
  • Hoopa-U is best utilized as a early-game wallbreaker that can significantly ware down the majority of defensive threats in the metagame, allowing its teammates to have an easier time sweeping later on.
  • Due to Hoopa-U's poor physical bulk, momentum from teammates is its best way to enter the battlefield, since it can otherwise be threatened to be OHKOed by even neutral physical attacks.
  • Hoopa-U can often get away with spamming its STAB moves the majority of the time especially if its paired with Tinted Lens, since not many defensive threats can avoid the 2HKO from its attacks.
  • Its coverage moves can be used to target specific threats that can withstand its STAB attacks such as Magearna and Umbreon.
  • It can oftentimes be beneficial for Hoopa-U to stay in versus Dark-types such as Weavile and Alolan Muk, since it can otherwise threatened to be KOed by Pursuit.

Team Options
  • Teammates that appreciate and can take advantage of Hoopa-U's unparalleled wallbreaking capabilities are extremely advantageous. Threats such as Zygarde, Minior, and Heatran can all clean up late game once Hoopa-U was weakened down their appropriate checks. They also can help deal with faster offensive threats that can prevent Hoopa-U from performing its role as effectively.
  • VoltTurn support from pivots such as Tapu Koko and Manaphy can aid Hoopa-U in switchin in more frequently, especially since it can punish defensive threats such as Ferrothorn and Zapdos that often come in against the aforementioned partners.
  • Entry hazard setters such as Landorus-T, Skarmory, and Heatran are all useful, allowing Hoopa-U to further break through its checks more easily.
  • Pokemon like Magearna and Doublade that resist Bug- and Fairy-type attacks are also beneficial, since they can come in against common coverage moves such as U-Turn and Moonblast that often scare out Hoopa-U.

  • Fire Punch is utilized to lure in Hoopa-U's most common check in Magearna, allowing it to 2HKO it on the switchin. It can also be used to target other reliable switchins to Hyperspace Fury in Buzzwole and non Flash Fire Skarmory.
  • Gunk Shot acts as a hreat coverage move that targets defensive Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini and Tapu Bulu that can switch into its Dark-type STAB attacks. However, the accuracy drop further lowers its reliability, meaning that it can not be safety relied on.
  • Trick is an alternative utility option, allowing Hoopa-U to cripple defensive threats who commonly switch in versus it such as Hippowdon, Mandibuzz, and Alolan Muk.

Set Details
  • Hustle boosts Hoopa-U's Attack in the cost of lowering the accuracy of its moves, turning it into a potent physical wallbreaker.
  • A Choice Scarf enables Hoopa-U to outspeed the majority of offensive threats such as Weavile, Landorus-T, and Greninja, making it capable of threatening offensive teams.
  • Hoopa-U can also opt to run a Choice Band, limiting the amount of checks thanks to the compounded Attack raises from its item and ability. However, it trades its new found power for its ability to threaten faster foes.
  • EVs have been invested fully in its Attack and Speed with a Jolly Nature in order to maximize Hoopa-U's revenge killing capabilities.

Usage Tips
  • Hoopa-U is best used as a revenge killer that can force out naturally faster offensive threats due to its capability to OHKO most of its targets thanks to the insane power it can output thanks to Hustle.
  • However, while Hoopa-U's high special bulk allows it to come in against common special attackers such as Mega Alakazam and Gengar, its abysmal Defense often employs the use of VoltTurn support in order to bring it in safely. Repeadly using Hyperspace Fury can also leave it susceptible to being revenge killed by priority moves, meaning that it aggressive pivoting is recommended.
  • Nonetheless, Hyperspace Fury should be its most spammed attack, since it avoids the inconsistency given with its other moves thanks to Hustle.
  • Trick should be conserved to cripple defensive walls that rely on their item such as Chansey, Porygon2, and Hippowdon. However, Hoopa-U must still be wary of tricking itself a Toxic Orb from common Poison Heal users such as Tapu Fini, Manaphy, Snorlax, and Suicune.

Team Options
  • Hoopa-U is best paired on bulky offensive teams that need a check to faster offensive threats. These team archetypes often include VoltTurn support from pivots such as Magearna and Landorus-T as well, letting Hoopa-U avoid potential massive damage when coming into the battlefield.
  • Other wallbreakers such as Noivern, Thundurus, and Heatran can help Hoopa-U break down physically defensive threats that can threaten to wall it such as Intimidate Hippowdon and Mandibuzz. Heatran is especially useful since it can also run a Magnet Pull set, trapping foes such as Magearna which otherwise become a nuisance towards Hoopa-U's wallbreaking prowess.
  • Entry hazard setters such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory are also beneficial, aiding Hoopa-U in securing critical 2HKOes versus certain threats such as Mandibuzz and Alolan Muk.
  • In a similar vein, entry hazard removers like Tapu Fini and Zapdos can also provide useful utility, allowing Hoopa-U to come in more often without fearing to be worn down by chip damage.

Strategy Comments

Other Options

  • Hoopa-U can utilize a Choice Scarf set with Psychic Surge, enabling it to hit incredibly hard while still being able to pose a threat against offensive teams thanks to the increased Speed and immunity to priority attacks.
  • A Choice Specs Tinted Lens can be utilized, letting Hoopa-U 2HKO specially defensive threats such as Chansey and Magearna without any support.
  • Hoopa-U can also employ a Nasty Plot set, enabling it to better break through other setup sweepers such as Tapu Fini and Suicune. However, its below average Speed stat prevents it from sweeping offensive teams.
  • A RegenVest set can also be used to great effect, letting Hoopa-U act as a check to other offensive Psychic-types such as Mega Alakazam and opposing Hoopa-U much better, however Hoopa-U offers more use as an offensive wallbreaker.

Checks and Counters

[Magearna]: Magearna is one of the only consistent checks to Hoopa-U thanks to its great special bulk when equipped with Assault Vest alongside its resistances to both Hoopa-U's STAB attacks, meaning it can pivot into Hoopa-U and threaten to OHKO it with its Fairy-type STAB attacks. However, Hoopa-U can still manage to target Magearna severely when using sets with Fire Punch or Tinted Lens Hyperspace Fury.

[Bulky Dark-types]: Defensive Dark-types such as Mandibuzz, Alolan Muk, and Umbreon are immune to Hoopa-U's Psychic-type attacks and resist its Dark-type STAB moves, meaning that they can often switch into it frequently and threaten it out with their coverage or status moves. However, Hoopa-U can still target the aforementioned threats with coverage moves such as Focus Blast, Thunderbolt and Drain Punch.

[Faster Offensive Threats]: Due to Hoopa-U's un-impressive Speed as an offensive threat, faster foes such as Noivern, Landorus-T, Terrakion, and Victini can all threaten to OHKO Hoopa-U with their attacks, unless Hoopa-U is carrying a Choice Scarf.

[Mixed Defensive Walls]: Miscellaneous mixed defensive walls such as Hippowdon, Ferrothorn, and Manaphy can wall avoid the 2HKO from Hoopa-U depending on its set, and can threaten to dent it with their coverage moves. However, they must scout what set Hoopa-U is running first, since certain Hoopa-U sets can break through the aforementioned examples regardless.

  • Psyshock is an alternative Psychic-type STAB move, enabling Hoopa-U to target specially defensive walls such as Chansey and Assault Vest Manaphy for more damage, having the chance to 2HKO Chansey under Psychic Terrain.
  • Dark Pulse is Hoopa-U's secondary STAB option, letting it hit Ghost- and opposing Psychic-types for super effective damage, meaning that threats like Latias, Doublade, and Victini have a much more difficult time coming in.
  • Gunk Shot is a great coverage move, denting certain Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini and Azumarill.

  • Trick is an alternative utility option, allowing Hoopa-U to cripple defensive threats who commonly switch in versus it such as Hippowdon, Mandibuzz, and Alolan Muk.

Set Details
  • Psychic Surge is utilized to turn Hoopa-U into a potent revenge killer, due to Psychic Terrain boosting its STAB Psychic-type attacks while simultaneously leaving it immune to priority moves.

I just did the first set, I can't remember what we finally decided on when we talked on PS but either we had a miscommunication or whatever I said to do was stupid.
Really the first set can just be physical attacker like you have it, and the only other set needs to be special and you can just put all the ability options on that set as the moves barely change. Hoopa has so many viable options we could make a million sets, I think just splitting into phys/special is easiest, you will just have to do a good job explaining what each item/ability does and which should be used in tandem. If this sounds like a bad idea or you have another suggestion, VM me. Otherwise like this post when the rest of the QC is ready. My issue is that the second and third sets are essentially the same.

sorry if this was my fault

Hey what's up, it's ya boi coming at u today with another smogn live video.

This rmt has been made around a mon I like a lot because of my childhood n shit called hoopla cause I use to have a dog who backflipped all the time and my mexican friends always use to say "hoopla" when he did.
That was back in the day and now they've been sent to the goolag but I remember those times vividly so that's why i thought I'd commemorate this with a smogpost in their honor.

The team in question:

U might notice there's only 3 mons here, we thought about having 4 mons but the 3rd and 4th were kinda redundant so fuk it. This is around the hoopla/hoopla/hoopla core which is really strong in little cup atm because hoopla is 500 kg and can take core of most threats by sitting on them like a fat wrestling lesbian.

This the first set yo, main wallbreaker, click fury on everything. Rest kinda overs other shit I guess, dpunch for ttar or pangoro and fire punch for Mag. Psychic is cool cause it 2hkos some physbulk mons like hippo or intimidate buzzwole but u need hasty with that. Trick is to trick ur opponent into thinking they can win when u still OHKO everything lmao hoopla's broken.

Hoopla-Unbound @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 Spa / 252 Spe
hasty Nature
- Psychic
- Dank Pulse
- Focus Miss
- Fire Punch

Second one kinda different, I use it as like a wallbreaker stallbreaker type of dude, punches bigass holes in teams like the hole left in my family when my dad left. Highly custumisable set rlly I just slapped optimal shit on there right now for demonstration purpuses, dual stab has good synergy and focus miss takes any resist, fire punch for the steel prostitute I swear everyone used her at least once. You can slap just about any move you want on this like tbolt or ice punch for mandi and max both atk for when ur not a pussy.

Hoopla-Unbound @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hyperspace Fury
- Gunk Shot
- Trick

This the scarf set I guess, hustle preffered cause otherwise you lack power and fury can't miss anyway so w/e. Other moves are irrelevant cause ur not gonna hit them but running Gunk for memes is always a good laugh.

Alright that's the team hope y'all have fun using it here's a replay of me beating qt's ass to prove some kind of point, pce.
