New Ability

Power of Alchemy: The Pokémon copies the Ability of a defeated ally.

It's better Muk, basically. No reason to use regular Muk in the same tier as this one when it has the better offensive AND defensive type.
That is true, but unfortunately it still lacks any way to heal itself outside of Leftovers/Black Sludge so Amoonguss is still looking better all around.

A good improvement over normal Muk. Its new abililty has many potential uses and could open up some nice possibilities. It also has STAB crunch to scare off psychic types. I bet it will be a solid pokemon in the lower tiers.

Unless you want a Pursuit trapper, which is the very reason this thing is awesome in lower tiers where Drapion and Skuntank find usage.

I'm kinda sad that they keep the same stat distribution as regular Grimer & Muk but the fact is that their Dark types put them a league ahead of their normal brethren. Along with access to Knock Off & Pursuit, it's going to be pretty cool in NU & RU.

Now I hope regular Muk gets something cool to not make it 100% outclassed by its Alola form, maybe Bulk Up?

Idk, guys. I wouldn't write Alolan Muk off just yet. It might not be as amazing as other mons so far, but it has some notable positives:

  • Great offensive and defensive typing with only one Ground weakness, which can be easily covered by teammates/Air Balloon.
  • While its movepool leaves much to be desired, it gets access to both STAB Knock Off and Gunk Shot.
  • It can STAB Pursuit-trap, which imo, is amazing for Assault Vest sets.
  • It gets access to Curse as a set-up move, which I can see being a great way to patch up its weaker physical defense.
  • Shadow Sneak priority, but wishes it got Sucker Punch instead.
I wish this thing got Sucker Punch and Earthquake as well as a better physical movepool overall, but STAB Knock Off, Gunk Shot and Pursuit definitely shouldn't be overlooked. This thing might actually be a nice, yet niche check to the Latis if running an Assault Vest.

Unless I understood this wrong, doesn't this new Hidden Ability work exactly like Passimian's Receiver? As in, in Singles, Alolan Muk can inherit something like Magic Bounce from a Xatu or Speed Boost from Combusken? That makes it so much better than Drapion imo.

I want to know if this works in Singles, too, because sacking a Levitate Pokemon, then going in to Muk would be absolutely sick.

It would still have to deal with stuff like Mold Breaker users, and just overall strong attackers.
But seriously, if it can inherit anything in Singles, it's going to be a beast.

Better Muk courtesy of it's dual typing and access to Knock Off. Pity the base stats remain the same. Good Poke for checking / countering many Psychics and Fairies. The "No reliable recovery" clause hurts it. I'd would have like some of it's Special Attack and base Speed poured on it's physical stats.

Might be a good UU or RU Poke at worst

Tory

Banned deucer.
I can see Alolan Muk as a great special wall against Alakazam, Amoonguss, Breloom, Mega Charizard Y, Gengar, Latias & Latios (without Earthquake), Magnetzone, Mega Manectric, Starmie, Serperior, Tangrowth, Thundurus, Tornadus, Volcarona and Zapdos.

Welp, pair this behemoth with Levitate (using Power of Alchemy) and you have the most annoying Pokemon. You can even set-up curses and sweep with Shadow Sneak and Gunk Shot.

This looks a really fun mon and I really hope it sees use. A relatively unique typing (and certainly the best of it's kind) along with a solid moveset and respectable bulk means it could serve as a niche pick. Shame it doesn't get reliable recovery because then it'd be a beast.

Muk-Alolan @ Assault Vest
Ability: Poison Touch/Power of Alchemy (if it's proven to work in singles)
EVs: 248 HP / 100 Atk / 92 Def / 64 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Pursuit
- Gunk Shot
- Shadow Sneak

This is an Alolan Muk set I'd run as a niche Pursuit trapper in OU. Physical bulk prevents Latios's EQ from 2HKOing you, special bulk prevents Latios's Draco Meteor from doing half, keeping you relatively healthy and still dodging the EQ knockout (although you'll most likely die after rocks, so keep those off the field), 4 speed to creep on opposing 50s such as Tangrowth and the rest in Attack.

I still really hope Power of Alchemy works in Singles, because tracing Levitate would be so good in OU, meaning EQ/EP users wouldn't be able to revenge-kill all that well.

I think Poison Jab might be better than Gunk Shot. Yea you lose out on the Base Power, but with Poison Touch (assuming that PoA doesn't work right in singles) you have what, 50% chance to poison things with Jab? That's pretty nice for things like Landorus-T and Garchomp which will switch in. Also, it's accurate.

Of course if PoA works in singles then Gunk is probably better.

100+ Atk Muk Poison Jab vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 192-228 (48.7 - 57.8%) -- 50.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

100+ Atk Muk Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 288-338 (73 - 85.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Idk man, I feel the much greater strength that comes with Gunk Shot just gives Muk more mileage, but yeah, Jab is still an option for that Sacred Fire-like Poison chance.

Fair enough, but I don't think Clef runs that spread unless it's CM Unaware, in which case the Poison chance is huge.

I think it'll depend on the mechanics of Power of Alchemy TBH.

Okay so I was thinking early. With Power of Alchemy in doubles, A-Muk (w/ Air Balloon) can be sent out with Shedinja, Shadow Sneak it first turn, and inherent Wonder Guard making him immune to direct damage. Of course it can still be whittled down by status or phased out, but unprepared for this sounds incredibly annoying to deal with in doubles lol.

Don't forget Muk can't be poisoned unless the enemy has a Salazzle, so really only WoW.
