Hey guys - competitive player and frequent lurker on Smogon. My first post here. I made a ranking that lists how good every Gen 1 Pokemon has been, on average, throughout the history of the game. Not sure if this has been done before. I based it on Smogon's tiers and gave each Gen 1 Pokemon a rating out of 10 based on which tier it appeared in for each format. Thought it would be fun to see how each of the Gen 1 Pokemon fared over the years. Considering making it a video sometime soon. I figured since I took most of the info from Smogon I should share it here first. I can expand it to other gens and include doubles soon.
Here's the breakdown:
Uber 10/10
OU 8/10
BL 7/10
UU 6/10
RU 4/10
NU 2/10
PU 0/10
BL2, 3 and 4 are 5/10, 3/10 and 1/10 respectively. I simply averaged each Pokemon's score out of 10 over the seven gens.
For example, this would be Machamp:
Gen 1: UU 6/10
Gen 2: OU 8/10
Gen 3: BL 7/10
Gen 4: OU 8/10
Gen 5: UU 6/10
Gen 6: UU 6/10
Gen 7: RU 4/10
Average: 6.43/10
Now for Gen 1 and 2 there is no format below UU, so nothing would get lower than a 6/10. For those two gens I gave a somewhat subjective score based on my perception of how good they are in those respective generations. For example I gave Gen 1 Sandslash 6/10, Hitmonchan 4/10, Butterfree 2/10 and Ditto 0/10. And no PU exists for Gens 3, 4 and 5. I didn't hand out any 1s or 0s for these gens because I wasn't sure what the worst of the worst was. Nothing got less than a 2/10 for gens 3-5, except for Ditto which got 0/10.
Now if the Pokemon evolved into something stronger in a later generation, then I used its evolved form. So I used Seadra for Gen 1 and Kingdra for Gens 2-7. If the Pokemon evolved but its base form was better, like Chansey with Eviolite in Gens 6 and 7, then I used that. Whichever was stronger. I didn't include the parallel evolutions that come from Gen 1 Pokemon - Bellossom, Politoed, Slowking and Hitmontop didn't affect the rankings.
I did the same with Alola forms - whichever was stronger. So Alola Marowak was better than regular Marowak and regular Dugtrio was better than Alola Dugtrio.
Now the Mega Evolutions were a bit tricky. I feel like a Pokemon that has a good base form and a good Mega form is more impressive than a Pokemon with only a good Mega form. For that I took the average of the two. So Gen 6 and 7 Venusaur got 6/10. Base is 4/10 and Mega is 8/10. Maybe I should just go with the Mega score - let me know. But averaging it vs taking the higher one doesn't affect the rankings much.
So here's the final rankings:
Final Rankings
Here's the raw data. You can see what score I gave each Pokemon for each Gen, including my subjective scores from Gens 1 and 2. If you feel that any of the Gen 1/Gen 2 scores are off or if anything from Gens 3-5 really deserves a 0/10 let me know.

If you don't want the link here's the top 25:
Rank Pokemon Average
1 Mewtwo 10
2 Mew 8.86
3 Gengar 8.29
4 Chansey/Blissey 8
5 Starmie 7.71
6 Zapdos 7.71
7 Dragonite 7.43
8 Scyther/Scizor 7.29
9 Alakazam 7.21
10 Magneton/Magnezone 7.14
11 Gyarados 7.07
12 Cloyster 6.86
13 Snorlax 6.86
14 Tentacruel 6.71
15 Slowbro 6.64
16 Dugtrio 6.57
17 Porygon/2/Z 6.57
18 Venusaur 6.57
19 Seadra/Kingdra 6.43
20 Clefable 6.43
21 Machamp 6.43
22 Vaporeon 6.43
23 Nidoking 6.29
24 Golbat/Crobat 6.29
25 Jolteon 6.29
And the bottom 10:
RankPokemonAverage
1 Butterfree 1.43
2 Farfetch'd 1.43
3 Parasect 1.71
4 Kingler 1.86
5 Wigglytuff 2
6 Raticate 2
7 Arbok 2.14
8 Flareon 2.14
9 Beedrill 2.29
10 Lickitung/Lickilicky 2.29
A few notes. Some Pokemon dominated their tiers and some were at the bottom. Snorlax was the king of Gen 2 OU but he only gets an 8/10. But I think this generally evens out, and I don't want to get too subjective and give 8.5, 6.5, 4.25 etc to every Pokemon. Also that's too much research - there's about 600 data points I'd have to check. Also Ditto was a little tricky. He was the worst Pokemon in Gens 1-4 but with Imposter he became quite viable in various formats in Gens 5-7. He doesn't really have a designated tier though. Right now his best tier is Anything Goes, where he's the 11st most used at 5.3%. Uber is 65th 2.1%, OU 117th 1.2%, UU 125th 0.65%, RU 127th 0.60%, NU 112th 0.78%, PU 54th 3.4%. Not sure what to make of that. Anyway I gave him 0/10 Gens 1-4 and 6/10 Gens 5-7 for an average of 2.57.
Let me know what you guys think. Suggestions to make it better are appreciated.
