Empoleon
QC:
[3/3]
GP: [2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Empoleon has access to a variety of utility options such as Defog, Stealth Rock, and Roar, enabling it to support its team in various ways. Its incredible defensive typing and natural bulk allow it to check a multitude of common threats in the tier, including Latias, Primarina, and Mega Pidgeot. Additionally, Empoleon's ability to force out these threats provides it with a ton of opportunities to either set up Stealth Rock or clear entry hazards from the field. However, its typing also leaves it weak to common offensive types such as Electric, Fighting, and Ground, making it easily exploited by Pokemon like Mega Manectric, Cobalion, and Mamoswine. Furthermore, Empoleon lacks reliable recovery, which makes it prone to being worn down. Empoleon faces competition as a hazard remover from Pokemon like Mantine, which has access to reliable recovery and is able to check Ground- and Fire-types reliably, and Tentacruel, which has access to Toxic Spikes.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald is a reliable STAB attack and has a solid chance to burn foes. Defog allows Empoleon to clear entry hazards from the field. Toxic hinders Pokemon like Latias and Water-immune Pokemon such as Jellicent and Mantine. Roar allows Empoleon to phaze setup sweepers such as Suicune, Venomoth, and Calm Mind Latias. Knock Off can be used instead of Toxic or Roar, as it cripples Pokemon like Primarina and Hydreigon by removing their items. Additionally, it can help wear down the opposing team when hazards are up. Stealth Rock can be incorporated into the set if needed, allowing Empoleon to support its team by weakening foes. However, Empoleon doesn't usually have room for it, and it's forced to forgo one of its more useful utility options.

Set Details
========

The given Defense investment ensures that Empoleon is never OHKOed by Cobalion's Close Combat, Krookodile's Earthquake, or Entei's Choice Band-boosted Flare Blitz, while the rest of the EVs and a Calm nature maximize Empoleon's special bulk, allowing it to switch into the likes of Mega Pidgeot and Primarina more easily. Leftovers provides Empoleon with a form of passive recovery, improving its longevity throughout the course of the battle. Torrent is Empoleon's most useful ability, as it powers up Scald when Empoleon's HP is low.

Usage Tips
========

Empoleon should be used as a switch-in to threats like Latias, Primarina, Mega Pidgeot, and non-Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl. However, it must be wary of Thunderbolt Mega Latias and Electrium Z Latias. It should take advantage of its ability to force out these threats by clearing entry hazards from the field or setting them up. Roar should be used to prevent Pokemon like Latias and Suicune from setting up, but keep in mind that they can use Empoleon as setup fodder if they're the last Pokemon on the opposing team. Toxic and Knock Off should be used to cripple Pokemon like Primarina or predicted Water-immune switch-ins like Jellicent and Mantine. Avoid switching Empoleon in on a potential Scald burn or Knock Off because it will be more easily worn down without its Leftovers recovery. Scald can be used very carelessly throughout the match, as it has a high chance to burn and wear down foes and cripple physical attackers that try to switch in.

Team Options
========

Empoleon should be used primarily on bulkier teams that appreciate its ability to pivot into a number of threats. Wish support from Pokemon like Sylveon and Alomomola helps Empoleon by increasing its longevity. Pokemon that are weak to entry hazards, such as Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Beedrill, appreciate having Empoleon to reliably clear hazards. Additionally, Mega Aerodactyl can serve as a check to the Grass-, Electric-, and Fighting-types that threaten Empoleon such as Amoonguss, Mega Manectric, and Heracross. Pokemon that can sponge attacks from Fighting-types and force them out, such as Latias, Doublade, and Gliscor, make for good partners for Empoleon. Latias is a particularly good teammate, since it can check Terrakion, Cobalion, and Infernape. Ground-types such as Krookodile and Seismitoad are able to check Electric-types that Empoleon struggles with such as Mega Manectric and Rotom-W. Empoleon appreciates having backup offensive checks to Pokemon like Latias and Togekiss, so Pokemon like the aforementioned Choice Scarf Krookodile and Mega Aerodactyl make for good partners.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A spread with 44 Speed EVs is an option, as it can outspeed uninvested Scizor and use Scald on it before it can escape with U-turn. An offensive set with Shuca Berry, a spread of 252 HP / 212 SpA / 44 Spe, a Modest nature, and a moveset in Scald / Ice Beam / Grass Knot / Defog can be used to KO common Pokemon that Empoleon lures in, including Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl and Ground-types such as Krookodile and Mamoswine. However, Empoleon loses out on the ability to pivot into other threats. Protect can be used on the main set to scout for coverage moves that could threaten Empoleon and gain extra Leftovers recovery. It also works well with Toxic. However, it's a bit hard to incorporate into the set, since Empoleon would rather utilize its other support options most of the time. An Agility set with a Petaya Berry turns Empoleon into a decent cleaner on offensively oriented builds, but it's very inconsistent because Empoleon is too slow to effectively sweep even after an Agility boost and is easily revenge killed.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-types**: Pokemon like Mega Manectric, Raikou, and Rotom-W can KO Empoleon with their STAB moves. Rotom-W is particularly threatening, since it also resists Scald.

**Fighting-types**: Pokemon like Cobalion, Heracross, and Toxicroak can hit Empoleon super effectively with their STAB moves. All of them bar Toxicroak dislike switching on a potential Scald burn, however.

**Ground-types**: Pokemon like Seismitoad and Gastrodon don't fear much from Empoleon and can usually KO it with their STAB moves. However, they must be wary of Toxic. Offensive Ground-types like Krookodile, Mamoswine, and Nidoking can also threaten Empoleon, but they struggle to switch into a potential Scald.

**Special Walls**: Special walls like Blissey are able to wall Empoleon and beat it one-on-one. However, they dislike having their items removed by Knock Off.

**Residual Damage**: Empoleon will be easily worn down if Leftovers is negated in some way. As such, Knock Off, burn damage, and entry hazards can cripple it a lot.

**Bulky Setup Sweepers**: Pokemon like Reuniclus, Heal Bell Togekiss, and Suicune can beat Empoleon one-on-one. However, Empoleon can prevent them from setting up by phazing them with Roar.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Pokemon like Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl and Crunch Mega Sharpedo can severely weaken Empoleon and prevent it from checking other threats depending on how heavily it invests in Special Defense.

Utility set
  • Alright, so I think the set you should be using is:
name: Utility
move 1: Scald
move 2: Defog
move 3: Toxic / Knock Off / Roar
move 4: Toxic / Knock Off / Roar
item: Leftovers
ability: Torrent
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 180 SpD

The Defense investment ensures that Empoleon is never OHKOed by Cobalion's Close Combat and also ensures it survives Krookodile's Earthquake and Entei's Choice Band-boosted Flare Blitz. It really doesn't eat out of Empoleon's special bulk too much. I don't think Ice Beam should be there, since it's pretty weak on a SpDef set; also, Rotom-Mow isn't that common at the moment, while Mega Sceptile tends to not run Focus Blast these days considering how they need Hidden Power Fire for Scizor. As a result, against those two Pokemon switching in, I'd rather catch them with Toxic or try getting rid of Rotom-Mow's item with Knock Off (or scout for the Grassium Z set) without sacrificing its utility against other threats; Toxic catches Latias and Slowbro, Knock Off cripples Primarina and Hydreigon, and Roar phazes Calm Mind Latias before it gets out of hand (just some other examples you can add). I'd just keep Stealth Rock as a mention in Moves because it can literally replace any moveslot bar Scald, and I don't want to complicate the slashes that way. Just change the set to Set Details to reflect these.

Usage Tips
  • I think it's fine to just say "be used as a switch-in to threats like..." as opposed to mentioning their types, since for example, Empoleon can't really switch into Haxorus well, but it does fall under Dragon-types. You can include a mention of non-Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl if you want a bit of diversity and not just special attackers, but that's up to you. I'm not a fan of Hydreigon as an example though, considering how easy it is for it to wear down Empoleon, especially if it's Life Orb or Choice Specs. Togekiss would be a cool replacement. Do mention how Empoleon has to be careful of Gigavolt Havoc from Latias, though.
  • Mention that certain threats that Roar tends to phaze such as Togekiss and Suicune will be able to use Empoleon as setup fodder if it's the last Pokemon on your team.
  • I'd merge Knock Off with the same point about when to use Toxic.
  • Mention avoiding Scald burns in the point about avoiding taking Knock Off for the same reason.
Team Options
  • I'd expand the Crobat bullet point to generally talk about Pokemon that can sponge Fighting-type attacks. Latias is a particularly good one, since it can check Terrakion, Cobalion, and Infernape.
  • Add a point stating how Empoleon typically needs backup offensive checks to Pokemon like Latias and Togekiss, so stuff like the aforementioned Choice Scarf Krookodile and Mega Aerodactyl fit the bill here.
  • I wouldn't say Mega Sceptile forces out Empoleon per se, just talk about how Empoleon can't do much damage to it, since I recommended removing Ice Beam from the main moves.
Other Options
  • Mention the possibility of running 44 Speed EVs to outspeed uninvested Scizor to Scald it before it can U-turn out. Consequentially, the offensive set should be elaborated upon to be running 252 HP / 212 SpA / 44 Spe with a Modest nature, and the given moves would be Scald / Ice Beam / Grass Knot / Defog. The set not only lures Ground-types (would be good to mention Krookodile and Mamoswine specifically, since those are the main ones; Nidoking would be wary either way because it can't OHKO SpDef Empoleon either) but also Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl, so mention that.
  • Mention the option of Protect on the specially defensive set to scout and gain extra Leftovers recovery. It can also work well with Toxic.
Checks and Counters
  • Remove Grass-types imo between it being able to cripple them with Knock Off and/or Toxic and the Grass-type STAB moves not doing too much (granted, Mega Sceptile can wear it down over time).
  • I really don't think Water-immune Pokemon should be a point of its as well. Like you said, most of those fear Toxic on their own, and while Jellicent can Taunt Empoleon, they would be pretty apprehensive about switching in in the first place. Those wouldn't appreciate losing their item via Knock Off either. I guess there's also the possibility of switching into Stealth Rock, getting phazed by Roar and having to take another 25% on switch in again. There really isn't much these Pokemon bar Toxicroak that can do back to Empoleon anyway; you can include Toxicroak under the Fighting-types point.
  • Mention how Ground-types struggle to directly switch in for obvious reasons.
  • It's worth expanding the Knock Off point to residual damage as a whole. No proper form of recovery basically means that any way its Leftovers recovery is mitigated (burns, Knock Off, entry hazards) would wear it down fast.
  • Bulky setup sweepers like Reuniclus, Heal Bell Togekiss, and Suicune basically beat Empoleon hard outside of being phazed for reasons mentioned earlier.
  • Strong physical attackers can be a big threat considering how heavily you invest in Special Defense, so stuff like Mega Sharpedo's Crunch can leave Empoleon severely weaken and unable to take on any threats it's supposed to.
I'll probably take a look at this again after you implement it, since there was a change of set and quite a few comments in general; however, consider this QC 1/3

Yeah, just remove the Hawlucha mention because of the recent tier shift, and we'll see who can do the second check.

sorry for the huge wait, let's get this done!

Overview

Mention mons that Empoleon struggles with as a result of its weaknesses.

Moves

Add Primarina as a Toxic target since it's one of the few things Empoleon can do to it.

Consider mentioning some disadvantages of stealth rock seeing as it's just a mention rather than being in the set (too much pressure put on empoleon, fewer moveslots to work with, etc)

Usage Tips

Mention Thunderbolt Mega Latias as another thing to watch out for when using Empoleon as a Latias switch-in.

Put the clearing of entry hazards as the primary task out of the two seeing as stealth rock is, again, just a mention.

Mention that Toxic or Knock Off should also be used versus Primarina after switching into it.

Checks and Counters

Give Seismitoad (and also perhaps Gastrodon) a special shout-out in the Ground-types section due to their Scald immunity.

2/3, go ahead and write this up, good job!

Wahahaha I'm back

-Mention in the overview that it faces competition from just most other hazard removers in general. IDK why you only mentioned defog users like Mantine and not even like Tentacruel and stuff.

Mention Latias-Mega in targets for Toxic. It's a great defogger imo and it really hates toxic. It's honestly the best Empoleon has to deter it, especially considering the fact that many Latias-Mega carry thunderbolt.

"Protect can be used on the specially defensive set, which allows Empoleon to scout for coverage moves that could force it out, and gain extra Leftovers recovery."

I'd mention why you wouldn't want to use it (it really needs the other moves).

Yeah overall this is really good!

Implemented. About the Toxic point though, I'm actually referring to both Latias and Mega Latias when I say that Toxic cripples Latias. Talked to Eyan about it and he said it was fine, so I'm keeping it as it is right now unless QC (or GP ig) thinks otherwise.

Ready for GP.

Protect can be used on the specially defensive set, which allows Empoleon to scout for coverage moves that could threaten it force it out, (RC) (surprise coverage wouldn't forget it out, it would KO empoleon, so this clarifies that) (hm "force out with move x" is accepted phrasing; this change is still good because Protect protects Empoleon from taking the move to the face, not from getting forced out, but ya be careful) and gain extra Leftovers recovery. It also works well with Toxic. Although, However, it's a bit hard to incorporate into the set, since Empoleon would rather utilize it's its other utility options most of the time. An Agility set with a Petaya Berry turns Empoleon into a decent cleaner on offensively oriented builds, but it's very inconsistent since because it's Empoleon is still too slow (too slow for what?), ("to effectively sweep" works) even after an Agility boost, and easily revenge killed.

**Special Walls**: Special walls like Blissey are able to wall Empoleon and beat it one-on-one. However, they dislike having their item removed by Knock Off.

**Residual Damage**: Since it lacks reliable recovery, if it's its Leftovers recovery is mitigated negated in some way, Empoleon will be easily worn down. As such, Knock Off, burn damage, and entry hazards can (keep this) cripple it a lot.

**Bulky Setup Sweepers**: (add colon) Pokemon like Reuniclus, Heal Bell Togekiss, and Suicune can beat Empoleon one-on-one. However, Empoleon can prevent them from setting up by phazing them out with Roar.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: (add colon) Pokemon like Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl and Crunch Mega Sharpedo's Crunch can severely weaken Empoleon and prevent it from checking other threats, depending on how heavily it invests in Special Defense.

[OVERVIEW]

Empoleon has access to a variety of utility options, (comma) such as Defog, Stealth Rock, and Roar, which enable enabling it to support its team in various ways. Its incredible defensive typing and natural bulk allow it to check a multitude of common threats in the tier, such as including Latias, Primarina, and Mega Pidgeot. Additionally, Empoleon's ability to force out these threats provides it with a ton of opportunities to either set up Stealth Rock or clear entry hazards from the field. However, its typing also leaves it weak to common offensive typings types such as Electric, Fighting, and Ground, making it easily exploitable exploited by Pokemon like Mega Manectric, Cobalion, and Mamoswine. Furthermore, Empoleon lacks reliable recovery, which makes it prone to being worn down. Because of that, (not true for Tent) Empoleon faces competition as a hazard remover from Pokemon like Mantine, which has access to reliable recovery and is able to check Ground- and Fire-types reliably, and Tentacruel, which has access to Toxic Spikes.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald is a reliable STAB attack and has a solid chance to burn foes. Defog allows Empoleon to clear entry hazards from the field. Toxic hinders Pokemon like Latias and Water-immune Pokemon, (comma) such as Jellicent and Mantine. Roar allows Empoleon to phaze opposing setup sweepers, (comma) such as Suicune, Venomoth, and Calm Mind Latias, Suicune, and Venomoth. Knock Off can be used instead of Toxic or Roar, as it cripples Pokemon like Primarina and Hydreigon by removing their items. Additionally, it can also help wear down the opposing team when hazards are up. Stealth Rock can be incorporated into the set if needed, which allows allowing Empoleon to support its team by weakening foes. However, Empoleon doesn't usually have room for it, and it's forced to forgo one of its more useful utility options.

Set Details
========

Torrent is Empoleon's most useful ability, as it powers up its Scald when its Empoleon's HP is low.

Usage Tips
========

Empoleon should be used as a switch-in to threats like Latias, Primarina, Mega Pidgeot, and non-Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl. However, it must be wary of Thunderbolt Mega Latias and Electrium Z Latias. Additionally, It should take advantage of its ability to force out these threats by clearing entry hazards from the field or setting them up. Roar should be used to prevent Pokemon like Latias and Suicune from setting up, but keep in mind that they threats Roar tends to phaze can use Empoleon as setup fodder if they're the last Pokemon on the opposing team. Toxic and Knock Off should be used to cripple Pokemon like Primarina or on a predicted switch against Water-immune Pokemon switch-ins like Jellicent and Mantine. Furthermore, Avoid switching Empoleon in on a potential Scald burn or Knock Off, (comma) because it will be more easily worn down with burn damage or without its Leftovers recovery. Scald can be used very carelessly throughout the course of the match, as it has a high chance to burn and wear down foes, (comma) and cripple physical attackers that try to switch in.

Team Options
========

Empoleon should be used primarily on bulkier teams that appreciate its ability to pivot into a number of threats. Wish support from Pokemon like Sylveon and Alomomola helps Empoleon by increasing its longevity, as it lacks reliable recovery. Additionally, thanks to its ability to reliably clean entry hazards, Pokemon that are weak to entry hazards, such as Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Beedrill, appreciate having Empoleon as a partner to reliably clear hazards. Additionally, Mega Aerodactyl can also serve as a check to the Grass-, Electric-, and Fighting-types that threaten Empoleon, (comma) such as Amoonguss, Mega Manectric, and Heracross. Pokemon that can sponge Fighting-type attacks from Fighting-types and force them out, such as Latias, Doublade, and Gliscor, make for good partners for Empoleon, as they can easily force them out. Latias is a particularly good teammate, since it can check Terrakion, Cobalion, and Infernape. Ground-types such as Krookodile and Seismitoad are able to check opposing Electric-types that Empoleon struggles with, (comma) such as Mega Manectric and Rotom-W. Empoleon appreciates having backup offensive checks to Pokemon like Latias and Togekiss, so Pokemon like the aforementioned Choice Scarf Krookodile and Mega Aerodactyl make for good partners.

Other Options
=============

A faster spread with 44 Speed EVs is an option, which as it can outspeed uninvested Scizor and use Scald on it before it can escape with U-turn out. An offensive set with Shuca Berry, a spread of 252 HP / 212 SpA / 44 Spe, (comma) with a Modest nature, (comma) and a moveset is in Scald / Ice Beam / Grass Knot / Defog can be used, which can to KO common Pokemon that Empoleon lures in, including Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl and Ground-types such as Krookodile and Mamoswine. However, Empoleon loses out on the ability to pivot into other threats. Protect can be used on the specially defensive set, which allows Empoleon main set to scout for coverage moves that could threaten it Empoleon and gain extra Leftovers recovery. It also works well with Toxic. However, it's a bit hard to incorporate into the set, since Empoleon would rather utilize its other utility support options most of the time. An Agility set with a Petaya Berry turns Empoleon into a decent cleaner on offensively oriented builds, but it's very inconsistent because Empoleon is still too slow to effectively sweep, (comma) even after an Agility boost, (comma) and is easily revenge killed.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Residual Damage**: Since it lacks reliable recovery, if its Leftovers is negated in some way, Empoleon will be easily worn down if Leftovers is negated in some way.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Pokemon like Earthquake Mega Aerodactyl and Crunch Mega Sharpedo can severely weaken Empoleon and prevent it from checking other threats, (comma) depending on how heavily it invests in Special Defense.
