Good Cores in ORAS NU

Welcome to the NU Good Cores thread, where you can post, discuss, and debate about an essential part of teambuilding: Cores, and the synergy between certain Pokemon.

Effective cores are very important in competitive Pokemon, and any good player uses them, intentionally or not. Defensive cores rely on covering a lot of attacking types and common threats within the core, while also offering team support, so that the core is useful even when walled. On the other hand, offensive cores still like having the common attacking types covered between its members, but offensive synergy is most important. Be it one member of the core attracting Pokemon that another member can easily switch into and force out, one member luring and weakening the checks and counters of another, or one member being able to beat the Pokemon that the other can't, those are the characteristics that are wanted from a good offensive core. Finally, there are mixed or balanced cores, as well as support and pivoting cores, which blend in into offensive and defensive cores. Support or pivoting elements in cores aim to either provide easier switch-in and set up chances to offensive Pokemon, or help to wall and stall out the opponent in the case of defensive cores.

The point of the project is to help teambuilders, newcomers, and other battlers to assist them in helping building their teams. Therefore, please don't post bad examples. Post cores that truly work and be ready to defend why. For example, Magmortar + Pyroar is a good offensive core because they break down each other's counters so that the other one can sweep. However, Audino + Lickilicky is not such a good defensive core because their roles overlap and they stack weaknesses with one another. If you wish to post a core, please make sure to explain how each member of the core works to help each other out. There has to be a reason why the Pokemon is there and not simply tacking on two random Pokemon!

Let's go! I'll be picking out the ones I like and archiving it here. When posting cores, please provide an explaination of why the core works, an importable, and preferably sprites, which can be retrieved here. Note: I reserve the right to make minor changes to cores posted if I feel like they improve the core.

You may now post! We have decided to scrap all the cores from the previous thread and start over, as the ORAS metagame has changed significantly.
When posting cores, please specify what type of core it is, as sometime it can be unclear (this is more for the difference between defensive and balance cores).

Steelix @ Steelixite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Crunch/Roar
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake

Prinplup @ Eviolite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Defog
- Toxic
- Grass Knot

Vileplume @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonlight
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Aromatherapy/Moonblast

My favourite core right now,as it checks/counters so much of the meta. Steelix mainly for psychic types that threaten vileplume and to somewhat check mega glalie. The set on steelix could probably be changed to a curse set if you want more offense in the core. Prinplup for mega camerupt, pyroar and co (can struggle with magmortar).Prinplup can also run stealth rock over grass knot allowing steelix to run curse or fire fang or something along those lines instead of stealth rock. again the set could be changed to your liking but this one should more or less be fine for this core in particular. Vileplume for a general cleric and a much needed pangoro check aromatherapy is probably more important than moonblast but moonblast is a good option none the less. The Core struggles with magmortar and malamar the most and pangoro is just a threat to any defensive core.I found myself running archeops to check these mons works decently well. Prinplup can also help with its stealth rock weakness so that's good.Anyway I am quite fond of this core and hope you like it.

Looks good, but I'm not too sure on prinplups evs. Generally, it's best to go with 252 / 252 with either spdef or def, unless you avoid any particular 2HKOs that you can provide calcs for. Also, I'd suggest slashing roar on steelix bc heavy slam hits psychic and ghosts hard enough that you don't really need crunch, and it's nice to phase sweepers such as sub cm uxie.
Also, would you classify this as a defensive or balanced core? I could see an argument for either tbh.

For Steelix I added roar and fire fang to the slashes as looking at it the core has trouble with ferroseed. As for prinlpup it's a funny story actually I was calcing before to see how much a return from mega glalie would do and those 72 evs were for a 4hko what I didn't realise was the mega glalie had no atk ev's so lol,I fixed the evs to 252 hp 252 spd and 4 def. also I would classify this as a defensive core. Hopefully it's up to par now

Offensive Core

Pangoro @ Life Orb
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Drain Punch
- Gunk Shot
- Parting Shot

Gorebyss @ White Herb / Leftovers
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA or HP / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shell Smash
- Baton Pass
- Scald
- Psychic / Substitute

Basically, if you run this core, you are the devil. Against a defensive team, use Panda's sheer offensive presence to force out their Poison-type (namely Weezing and Qwilfish) and use Parting Shot on them, preferably on the switch, and laugh as Gorebyss causes them to piss themselves and set up Shell Smash on them, either sweeping them there itself or passing the boosts away to its teammates. This core is even more effective against offensive teams; while Panda cannot threaten as much Pokemon on offensive teams to force the favorable matchup, you can take advantage of that one defensive link offensive teams usually have (Seismitoad, Ferroseed, Probopass, etc.) and either Parting Shot for Gorebyss to set up easier, or you could simply have Gorebyss set up right there on them. Then you pass the Smash to Panda and make offensive teams cry themselves to sleep, if Gorebyss had already had its fun. The 'back-and-forth' concept of this core makes it tricky to counter, especially given the threat level of both Pokemon. You can very easily adjust this core by adding appopriate sweeping teammates; it is the ease which Gorebyss can get the Shell Smash off that makes this core strong.

Timid allowing Byss to outspeed the Poison-type walls speedcreeping Panda. White Herb simplifies things for both parties, a quick and safe Smash without the defense drops relieves concerns for Gorebyss and Pangoro, which is better against offensive teams. On the other hand, SubSmash Gorebyss can have an easier time finding a safe opportunity to boost (particularly against Ferroseed, Garbodor, and Qwilfish), and isn't one-time use. SubSmash does leave Panda with -1 defenses which can be risky, although it should be relatively safe from priority due to the healing granted by Drain Punch. I went with Psychic on Gorebyss mainly to immediately deal with the Poison-types for Pangoro if need be; it's not too shabby for neutral coverage either.

Edit: You can run Huntail over Gorebyss, but Gorebyss happens to deal with Pangoro checks / counters better; you can afford Huntail if you have already good responses for those Pokemon though.

I'm runnig this core with Uxie Dual Screen + Memento, a wallbreaker like band Sawk and a U-Turn spamm, and I confirm that it's really bullshit, Pangoro do a great job, but this is not the set I run on. Try to put :

Pangoro @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 180 SDef / 76 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Drain Punch
- Gunk Shot
- Earthquake

Mega Steelix + Togetic+Haryama is good Defensive core that I have used a lot, basically Fairy+ Steel have a real good synergy but they have a common weakness to fire, what a Think Fat AV haryama can easily take care off. I have great results with that core even being a really bad player at all.

That one is very similar to the first defensive core that was posted but togetic have reliable recovery and immunity to any hazard not named Stealth rocks,Have fun

Steelix-Mega@Steelixite
Ability:Sand Force
Evs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Toxic / Roar

Togetic @ Eviolite
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Nature: Bold
- Roost
- Dazzling Gleam
- Thunder Wave / Encore
- Defog / Flamethrower / Heal Bell

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 128 Def / 128 SpD
Nature:Adamant
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Fake Out
- Ice Punch

Togelix, a terrific good defensive core which aboose the good synergy between fairy and steel types, perfect for stall teams with ton of utility like Roar Stealth rocks ,defog, heal bell make this a top core for me, basically Steelix cover togetic's weakness to Poison, Steel and is a soft check do Mega-Glalie(what is a huge huge threat in this meta) and Togetic can switch on fighting and ground moves for steelix, unfortunally this amazing core share one common weakness that is Fire attack, what is super effective on Steelix and fire mons resists the attacks from Togetic what can be really really troublesome with the common fire spam teams we are seeing on ladder.
This weakness and the current meta makes Hariyama the best partner to finish the core, as with the current ev spread it can help me team deal with Glalie and at the same time tank decently most of the like as ScarfEruptionTyplhosion, this trio still nor perfect and appreciate psychic mons to deal with troublesome bulk poison mons like weezings, Cleric support to keep Steelix and Hariyama(as they both have no reliable recovery), water resistance( for the likes of gator as none of them enjoy tanking the power of the based NU lord), I hope you guys can have fun with this core as much as I have

ps: As the calcs will prove mega glalie is kinda force to explode to not being K.O. back, what will happens most of the times by glalie being killed by hazards as it is extremally week to every single hazard.

Hey - really appreciate the contribution, but it would be awesome if you could post the sets exported from PS and with pictures like others have.

Edit: I'm not too sure on your EV spreads, as specially defensive togetic doesn't wall anything specific that physically defensive does, unless you can provide some significant calcs.
Next, I'm asking you to change Hariyama to an adamant nature as having the extra bulk of a careful nature is not worth it. Also, if you really want a coverage move I suggest ice punch over fire punch because it hits the same targets that fire punch does, and more - or change it entirely to fake out which is generally much better.

Hey man, I think it would be really helpful to newer players if you could add a description to the end of the core as,many new players come to the good cores thread when team building. If you're not sure how to go about it,you can look at some of the cores posted already or go and look at the XY NU good cores thread
for examples.I'm also quite fond of this core ;]

Balanced Core

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 212 SpD / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Bullet Punch

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock / Spikes
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Granbull @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Play Rough
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Heal Bell

This core is just perfect in balanced team, these 3 mons have a huge defensive and offensive coverage. Hariyama can come on every fire spamm, Ferro can stop Feraligatr, Kabutops and Leech stall M Steelix, and these 2 mons can kill the shitty M Glalie. But now, why Granbull ? It can check all fightning types, for example, it's not 2HKO on Banded Sawk's Poison Jab. This thing is a monster. The Rest talk it's the only way it has to recover, and Heal Bell can support the team and wake up Granbull on a Sleep Talk. Hariyama's spread is a classic spread, the speed is upped to outspeed the 55's Speed like defensives Exeggutor or Golurk.
(well sorry for my english less than bad, I'm a french player and I'm writing with the few words I know... :/ )

Balanced Core

Uxie @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Psychic
- U-turn

Camerupt @ Cameruptite
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power Grass

Cameruxie, the core that you can explore at max the power of one of the top wallbreakers in the hole meta that is mega camerupt, They have near perfect synergi as Uxie can provide Stealth Rocks, immunity to ground moves aimed at Camerupt and with a slow U-turn and twaves gives Camerupt a chance to be on the field without having to tank anything and do a ton of damage to whatever be on the opponent floor( it hits really hard, and fire is not the best type to tank hits as in NU it is extremally powerfull and can break near everywall.
Its core even been wonderfull by itself , apreciates really much some supports, like Water resist from the likes of Seismitoad(SR support as well what lets uxie be dual screener making Camerupt even more dangerous), Cleric support to make camerupt durability bigger from the likes of Audino, Granbull, and togetic, the last too are interesting, as they can switch on Hariyama(Garbodor deserve as mention as a Hariyama switch as well for it ability to provide spikes for the team).
Hope you guys enjoy, and try to build around this at somepoint, that is the core with more sucess on my entire career.

Sneasel @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Pursuit

Lilligant @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Quiver Dance
- Sleep Powder

Here's an offensive duo. Sneasel helps Lilligant wear down and trap Lilligant's checks/counters so it can sweep late-game. Hariyama is a common pivot for special attackers, including Lilligant, and Sneasel happens to be a pokemon with knock off that gets checked by Hariyama also. Sneasel can knock off Hariyama's assault vest, which is great because you're wearing Hariyama down
( 252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hariyama: 125-148 (29.1 - 34.4%) -- 4.5% chance to 3HKO ) as well as lowering its spdef. Xatu is a counter to Lilligant if Lilligant isn't running hidden power ice, which honestly there's little reason to use ice since Dragalge is gone. Sneasel comes in handy here because Sneasel pursuit traps Xatu so you don't have to run hidden power ice, and can instead run hidden power fire so that you're not walled by Ferroseed. Sneasel can pursuit fat stuff like Uxie so Lilligant doesn't have to depend on sleep powder to not get thunder waved. Some other stuff that can be pursuited so Lilligant can sweep: Jynx (scarf variants outspeed Lilligant after a quiver dance), Cryogonal, scarf Rotoms that like to trick to limit Lilligant's setup. A common way to revenge sneasel is through priority aka slow shit that gets sleep powdered by Lilligant.

Balance Core

Camerupt @ Cameruptite Disjunction :]
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 44 SpA / 216 SpD

Vileplume @ Black Sludge iTeddeh :]
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Moonlight
- Sleep Powder/HP Fire/Aromatherapy

This is the best, and almost unbreakable balanced core in NU at the moment. Not only does this core provide utility, but it provides much needed punch with mega camel and vileplume. The classic FWG core allows you to check most thing, and the innate power of plume and mega camerupt allow you to fire back strong attacks on the switch. RestTalk camel allows you to avoid being worn down by the prominent NU firetypes, and once again, fire off 328 SPA +sheerforce boosted attacks and dent huge hole in the opponent's team. Plume is a much needed fighting check, and with sleep powder allows you to disable an opposing mon. Prinplup is here for the utility of rocks, and defog, and another psuedo-fire check. Grassknot is to hurt seismitoad, and do big dmg to gatr.

Big props to Disjunction for the Mega Camerupt set :]

Feel free to comment in the comment section below, please like, rate, and subscribe!

btw if you see any problems with this core plz comment, trying to make it as good as possible

Looks good for the most part, few small things.
Change camels EV spread to 248 / 44 / 216 to hit a jump point in SpD and have an odd number in hp. Also slash toxic behind grass knot on prinplup (why you didnt tag Kiyo for this idk lol), as its generally pretty useful. Aslo maybe slash Hp Fire with sleep powder, but this team really isnt that weak to klinklang.

Generic Offensive Core

Feraligatr @ Lum Berry
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 184 HP / 252 Atk / 72 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Ice Punch
- Swords Dance

Typhlosion @ Choice Specs
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Lilligant (F) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sleep Powder

Really, this core is like the most generic offensive RWG core there. Each of these Pokemon work effectively to take out each other's checks and counters. Feraligatr's EVs are designed to outspeed max Speed neutral base 55 Speed, such as Adamant Cacturne and Modest Exeggutor, both of which would be threats to Feraligatr otherwise. Typhlosion deals immense damage to Grass-types, which would otherwise be a problem to both Feraligatr and Lilligant, to a lesser extent. And Lilligant take on all of the Rock-, Ground-, and Water-types that the other two Pokemon don't want to deal with, like Seismitoad, Rhydon, Lanturn. It also has Sleep Powder, allowing it to take down some bulkier Pokemon or some of the Pokemon that might resist or take neutral damage from its attacks.

Defensive Core

Steelix @ Steelixite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off

Rotom @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 48 HP / 252 Def / 208 Spe
Bold Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball

This is the core I built around in the team I used against Bobby REKT in the first round of Farm League. Mega Steelix is just such a versatile wall, setting Stealth Rock with ease, and actually doing quite a bit of damage, even with such little investment. Dragon Tail keeps it from being set up on, while Heavy Slam and Earthquake are its two STAB attacks, Steel + Ground having such great coverage. Hariyama is the second member of the core, and is more designed to take special attacks. Assault Vest and Thick Fat allow it to easily switch into Typhlosion, Pyroar, Magmortar, and several other Pokemon. The last member of the core is something more peculiar, but something that I just love. Defensive Rotom is just so good at taking on so many physical attackers. Will-O-Wisp makes it easier to cripple physically offensive Pokemon. It isn't all that good on taking on special Pokemon, so Volt Switch allows it to escape from those. Its EVs are designed to outspeed max Speed neutral base 85 Pokemon - which is pretty much just Adamant Sawk and Qwilfish. I hope you guys enjoy this core as much as I do.

If you guys see anything that I can change to improve these two cores or any mistakes, please, help out.

4 Atk Adamant? If you wanted a bit more oomph while not sacrificing much bulk, you could at least try to hit a jump point with that, like 16 Atk Adamant Rhydon. Mega Steelix would also hit a jump point if you put 16 Atk EVs on it.

Offensive Core

Steelix-Mega @ Steelixite
Ability: Sand Force
EVs: 76 HP / 252 Atk / 180 Spe
Adamant Nature

Fraxure @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 20 HP / 252 Atk / 236 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Dragon Claw
- Superpower
- Poison Jab / Aqua Tail

236 Speed Scarf lets Fraxure outspeed base 106's such as Liepard + Pyroar. The most common scarpers, Rotom and Typholosion, cannot reliably do anything to Fraxure leaving not many threats to come in and check/revenge it if you're locked into Outrage.

Fraxure is an amazing late game sweeper because of it's great typing, 117 Base attack and access to a 120 STAB move..

Steelix literally just destroys everything that gives Fraxure a problem. Vileplume takes around 70% from a Heavy Slam, STEEL types are destroyed by EQ and FAIRIES are completely bopped by Heavy Slam. Shoutouts to iplaytennislol for the original idea to EV Steelix to outspeed Vileplume.

Idk, this might just be me, but Fraxure seems really underwhelming in general, but its even more accented with the fact that you have a scarf on him. I think the two decent sets are a DD set with taunt or a Choice Banded set for immediate power.

Typhlosion (M) @ Choice Specs

Feraligatr (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 184 HP / 252 Atk / 72 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Ice Punch

Very basic. The idea here is to keep offensive pressure on the opponent with Serperior, Typhlosion's Eruptions, and SD Gatr. Like all offensive cores, it appreciates hazard support, though only Stealth Rock is really necessary, and Typhlosion appreciates a teammate to keep Stealth Rock off the field. Serperior runs Hidden Power Ice because it covers other Grass-types and Flying-types, and Fire coverage is already covered by Typhlosion.

A really fun offensive core that I've been using on offensive teams lately that is designed to bait in and take out Mega Steelix. Mega Steelix is a fairly common switch in for almost all variants of Mesprit, at which point Mesprit can U-turn out into Probopass for the trap. Probopass can run either Stealth Rock or Taunt in the last slot, Taunt lets you beat RestTalk variants of MegaLix while Stealth Rock can be used to free up another moveslot on a more offensive team. This core also works really well with a mon that appreciates Mega Steelix being gone like Scyther or Swellow.

Mesprit @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Ice Beam / Thunderbolt
- Energy Ball
- U-Turn

Probopass @ Leftovers
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpAtk / 4 Spd
Modest Nature
- Magnet Rise
- Earth Power
- Volt Switch
- Taunt / Stealth Rock

I'd consider adding more speed to probopass, but aside from that it looks good. Tbh you could just pair Magnet Rise Probo with anything that likes Steels gone.

Basic core of lure Rotom F and SD Gatr. This core is more relevant in this metagame as it has shifted to bulky offense/ balance. SD Gatr is still a driving force in the metagame however bulky grass types like Tangela, Gourgeist, Vilplume and to an extent Seismitoad stop it. Lure Rotom Fan is a really underrated mon right now that helps Gatr immensely by luring in those threats seeing as how most Rotom F are choice scarfed. Thunderbolt should be used most of the time to kill something as the opponent is more inclined to bring in their Seismitoad or Vileplume and that's when you click the appropriate move to dispose them. Since Rotom is really weak unless it lands a super effective hit, it appreciates Gatr's ability to set up on bulky mons. Rotom F can burn threats like Hariyama and Sawk to make them passive and set up bait for Gatr. Synergy wise, Gatr can take Ice types while Rotom can handle Grass types 1v1.

In this meta, HP Water is much better on Rotom-S to hit Mega Steelix and Mega Camerupt, and Volt Switch should be used over Tbolt imo.
With the new drops in Virizion, Heliolisk, and Quag, SD Gatr is completely outclassed by DD gatr, as having the extra speed boost to outspeed heliolisk and kill it with EQ and smack Virizion with Ice Punch is much better. Maybe even consider Scarf Rotom-S to outspeed Virizion, as Stone Edge hurts a lot.
