Ponyta (ADV NU Analysis)

Disaster Area

formerly Piexplode
Thanks to Oglemi most of this is just reworded and edited from the Charmeleon Analysis, since it's a very similar Pokemon.

[Overview]
- Fastest Fire-type in the tier, important in leading.
- Really one-dimensional, isn't going to be doing much apart from its special attacker set, and is very frail.
- Easier to wall than Charmeleon and has less utility than Quilava, whilst is also frailer. Only advantage over Magby is Hypnosis, and outspeeding opposing Magby.
- Main reason to use over Magby is that it can outspeed and OHKO Glalie, as well as outspeed said Magby, and tie with Venomoth and tie with or outspeed Poliwhirl (it tends to run enough speed to outspeed Magby but not tie with base 90s). Furthermore, it has access to the unreliable but useful Hypnosis.

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Overheat
move 2: Hidden Power Grass
move 3: Hypnosis
move 4: Quick Attack / Flamethrower
item: Charcoal
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Overheat is the only move to OHKO Glalie (other than CB-boosted Iron Tail), however it is punished somewhat if the opponent switches.
- Hidden Power Grass has good coverage alongside its Fire type STAB.
- Hypnosis grants it extra utility as a lead, and unlike Venomoth can probably Sleep something other than opposing Glalie (although more risk is involved due to the lower accuracy and more common weaknesses), since it can usually force it out. It also poses more of a direct offensive presence, however it's easily walled.
- Flamethrower acts as a more consistent STAB, whilst Quick Attack allows it to KO EndRev/EndFlail users.
- Protect allows it to scout opposing leads.
- Sunny Day and Solarbeam can both work, but is tricky to set up on such a frail Pokemon.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- The ability to force out Glalie and Sleep something too makes it worthwhile, although most of what it sleeps would primarily be Fire types such as Flareon and Torkoal, or occasionally Water types.

[Other Options]
- Nothing much of note here! Swagger, Charm, and Toxic could perhaps see use, but they're even more inconsistent and less useful than its primary choice of moves.

[Checks and Counters]
- Kecleon
- Flareon and Magcargo
- Wailord, Pelipper, and other Water-types apart from Whiscash and Relicanth
- Specially defensive Calm Mind Chimecho
- Sudowoodo just barely avoids the 2HKO from Fire Blast + HP Grass and OHKOes in return with Rock Slide
- Anything fast and Physical can easily revenge kill it.
- RestTalk Flareon is maybe the best anti-lead for it, since the few things that beat Glalie and don't hate Ponyta as a lead dislike getting slept, such as CB Sudowoodo or Relicanth.
