Serperior

[OVERVIEW]

  • Serperior is a metagame-defining offensive threat because of its access to Contrary, which allows it to boost its Special Attack by 2 stages every time it uses Leaf Storm.
  • Its access to good utility moves like Glare, Substitute, Defog, and Leech Seed allows it to fill several roles for a team.
  • Its high Speed stat is also extremely beneficial, allowing Serperior to late-game clean a lot easier in conjunction with Leaf Storm because of its ability to outspeed much of the unboosted metagame, including Pokemon such as Infernape, Cobalion, and Terrakion.
  • Serperior has decent bulk and a couple of useful resistances to Water, Electric, and Ground, allowing it to check Pokemon such as Belly Drum Azumarill, Rotom-W, and Seismitoad.
  • However, Serperior is initially very weak; when unboosted, it fails to OHKO Pokemon such as Scizor and Amoonguss.
  • Its offensive movepool is extremely barren, meaning that it has to rely on mediocre coverage options such as Hyper Beam and Dragon Pulse.
  • Serperior is easy to pressure offensively because of its only decent bulk and its weaknesses to common types like Fire, Flying, Ice, and Bug, making it weak to Choice Scarf users, priority users, and faster Pokemon such as Infernape, Hydreigon, Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Beedrill, and Mamoswine.

Moves
========

  • The combination of Substitute, Leech Seed, and Leftovers allows Serperior to slowly wear down Pokemon while ensuring that it barely loses health in the process. Substitute also allows Serperior to dodge status moves such as Blissey's Toxic.
  • Leaf Storm is Serperior's STAB attack and boosts its Special Attack by 2 stages upon use.
  • Hidden Power Fire hits Steel-, Bug, and Grass-types such as Scizor, Heracross, Doublade, and Amoonguss super effectively.

Set Details
========

  • 56 HP EVs ensures that Serperior's Substitute is not broken by Rotom-W. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Attack and Speed to allow Serperior to hit as hard and as fast as possible.
  • A Timid nature allows Serperior to outspeed key threats such as Terrakion and Cobalion.
  • Contrary boosts Serperior's Special Attack by 2 stages every time it uses Leaf Storm.

Usage Tips
========

  • Don't let Serperior get hit by any status move, especially Toxic and paralysis, which both totally cripple Serperior in the long run.
  • Serperior shouldn't be switched into Volt Switch from Electric-types because they will just switch out into a Serperior counter.
  • Substitute is a good move to use a lot of the time because it allows Serperior to dodge status and scout switches and sets. In addition, it protects Serperior from Choice Scarf users.
  • Don't let Serperior take strong attacks when it doesn't have to, because its bulk good but not great and letting Serperior take unnecessary damage hurts its ability to clean in the late-game.

Team Options
========

  • Rotom-W is a great Serperior partner because of its ability to bring Serperior in with Volt Switch and its ability to switch into Fire- and Flying-types moves from the likes of Mega Manectric, Infernape, and Mega Aerodactyl.
  • Entry hazard removers such as Rotom-W, Mega Altaria, and Latias are great teammates because
  • Entry hazard setters such as Terrakion, Klefki, and Tentacruel are able to wear down Serperior's offensive and defensive counters. Araquanid is also able to set up Sticky Web for Serperior so that it outspeeds Choice Scarf Infernape and Mega Manectric.
  • Pursuit trappers such as Scizor and Krookodile are able to remove Latias and Chandelure from the game so that Serperior has an easier time sweeping.
  • Ground-types such as Mamoswine and Gliscor are capable of taking on Amoonguss and Alolan Muk, which both check Serperior very well.

Other Options
=============

List some options for the Pokemon user that are plausible but not always recommended due to either being not consistent enough or too outclassed by other Pokemon in the metagame.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Poison-types**: Poison-types such as Amoonguss, Alolan Muk, and Salazzle are capable of taking a Leaf Storm quite well and threatening it out with the threat of a super effective STAB move. Alolan Muk and Amoonguss are specially bulky enough to not take much damage from a +2 Z-Hyper Beam.

**Choice Scarf / Priority / Faster Threats **: Choice Scarf Infernape, Mega Manectric, Choice Scarf Hydreigon, Mega Pidgeot, Mega Aerodactyl, and more are capable of outspeeding and heavily damaging or OHKOing Serperior with STAB or coverage moves.
