Shelmet [QC 1/3]

[OVERVIEW]
  • Shelmet fills the role of a Spikes setter, which chips down the opponent's team throughout the match.
  • Shelmet's Bug-typing gives it a resistance to the widespread Fighting-type. It is very bulky and has access to Recover and the health-absorbing Leech Life, allowing it to come in and set up Spikes multiple times throughout a match.
  • Baton allows Shelmet to function as a slow pivot and bring in teammates safely.
  • Overcoat grants Shemet an immunity to Foongus' Spore, giving your team a sleep absorber.
  • Despite Shelmet’s good defensive qualities, it is very weak offensively, having a limited movepool and being very passive.
  • Shelmet is also very susceptible to Taunt, being effectively neutralized by the move.
  • Shelmet is weak to the Flying-types such Vullaby and Rufflet that run rampant in the tier, making it difficult to always make the best use of its great bulk. Shelmet is also weak to Stealth Rock, so if it is set Shelmet loses a quarter of its health every time it switches in.
  • Spikes faces competition from Stealth Rock as an entry hazard, so Shelmet faces competition from Stealth Rock setters such as Onix, Ferroseed, and Dwebble.
[SET]
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Leech Life
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Eviolite
ability: Overcoat
nature: Impish
evs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 236 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Spikes does consistent damage to all grounded Pokemon, regardless of typing, and provides good team support as the opponent takes damage when switching throughout the battle.
  • Recover also makes Shelmet a great hazard setter because it can heal up and come in multiple times throughout a match to set up Spikes.
  • Leech Life provides Shelmet with a solid offensive attack, and the extra health restored in addition to Recover helps it to survive throughout the match.
  • Baton Pass allows Shelmet to act as a slow pivot, using its great bulk to take a hit, then switch out and bring a teammate in safely.
Set Details
========
  • An Impish nature, 156 Defense EVs and 236 Special Defense allow Shelmet to hit even numbers, maximizing the value of the Eviolite. The 116 HP EVs provide more longevity and minimize Stealth Rock damage.
  • Having Eviolite as the held item adds even greater bulk to Shelmet.
  • Overcoat makes Shelmet a good sleep absorber for your team, being immune to Foongus' Spore.
Usage Tips
========
  • Shelmet should always be trying to set up Spikes.
  • Shelmet is good at coming throughout the match thanks to its great bulk and Recover, so it doesn't need to try and set up three layers of Spikes at one time. For example, it can come in on Fighting-types and Foongus and proceed to set up Spikes.
  • Shelmet can set up Spikes at the start of the match as a lead, but it struggles against other common leads such as Onix and Dwebble.
  • After setting up Spikes or if you need to bring another Pokemon in without it taking a hit, Baton Pass can be used to have Shelmet take an attack and bring a teammate in safely.
  • Shelmet should generally avoid being in against Pokemon that set up, such as Shell Smashers and Bulk Up Timbur, because it becomes set-up fodder.
Team Options
========
  • Pokemon that resist Flying-type moves such as Chinchou, Tirtouga, and Magnemite make good teammates. Chinchou and Tirtouga are also good teammates because they can take Fire-type attacks from Pokemon such as Ponyta and Larvesta.
  • Volt Switch and U-turn users such as Chinchou, Elekid, Mienfoo, and Rufflet make great teammates for Shelmet because they can bring it in to set up Spikes. They also gain momentum, causing the opponent to switch out and take damage from Spikes after they’ve been set up. Shelmet also forms a switching core with these Pokemon since it has Baton Pass itself to switch out.
  • Frail, offensive Pokemon appreciate Shelmet's ability to being them in safely with Baton Pass as well as the chip damage Spikes provides so they can get KOs.
  • Powerful wallbreakers tend to force a lot switches, which would rack up Spikes damage on the opponent's team.
  • Spikes takes multiple turns to set up fully, so having them get removed is very costly. Having a Spinblocker or Defog deterrent becomes very important, so Pokemon such as Pumpkaboo-Super, Frillish, and Pawniard are good teammates.
  • Rapid Spin users are good teammates because Shelmet takes a lot of damage from Stealth Rock. However, Defog should not be used because it also removes the Spikes Shelmet set up.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Bug Buzz can be used over Leech Life to make Shelmet a special attacker, but the health recovered by Leech Life is preferred because it adds to Shelmet’s longevity.
  • Sludge Bomb is an option for the last slot, but it leaves Shelmet unable to deal much damage at all against very bulky Pokemon such as Vullaby and Foongus.
  • Infestation can be used to provide chip damage and trap an opponent if you predict a switch-in, allowing you to bring in a Pokemon that has a favorable match-up. However, the more consistent damage and permanency of Toxic is a better choice.
  • Curse and Acid Armor are both options to be set up and passed with Baton Pass, but it is generally too difficult to fit either of these moves onto its set. Baton Pass, Recover and an attacking move are required, and Spikes is the whole reason to use Shelmet over another Pokemon.
  • Shell Armor could be used as an ability to prevent critical hits, but Overcoat's immunity to Spore is much more useful.
  • Shelmet has lackluster offensive stats, so Toxic provides it with a consistent way to deal damage to defensive Pokemon that would otherwise take very little damage from Leech Life.
  • Encore is an option to lock the foe into an unfavorable move, preventing Shelmet from becoming set-up fodder.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-Types**: Shelmet has no significant way to damage Fire-types such as Ponyta and Larvesta, so the best Shelmet can hope for is to survive one hit and set up another layer of Spikes before being KO’d.

**Flying-Types**: Shelmet has nothing to hit Flying-types such as Vullaby and Rufflet hard - they are not even damaged by Spikes - and Shelmet is easily KO’d by them.

**Rock-Types**: They are not damaged heavily by Shelmet, and Shell Smash users such as Dwebble and Tirtouga can use Shelmet as set-up fodder. Kabuto can spin away Spikes and deal heavy damage with Rock Slide and Onix can prevent Shelmet from setting up with Taunt and just about KO with Rock Blast. These Rock-types can also set up Stealth Rock as well, hurting Shelmet's ability to pivot in throughout the match.

**Rapid Spin and Defog Users** Pokemon such as Staryu and Vullaby can remove the Spikes, making it pointless to set them up, and Shelmet doesn’t do much damage to them in return. In particular, Vullaby can significantly damage Shelmet with a Flying-type move.

**Set-Up Sweepers** Pokemon such as Timburr, Vullaby, and Spritzee can use Shelmet as set-up fodder and set up, not fearing Shelmet’s Leech Life. They can then break through its bulk to KO and proceed to cause havoc on the rest of your team. Shelmet’s best option is to Toxic so its teammates can take out the opponent more easily.

amcheck here, implement what you want.

in overview, add more substance in your first line, it just tells us that Shelmet sets Spikes and nothing else, not how Spikes makes it useful or anything.
mention that Shelmet's Bug typing allows it to come in against Fighting type moves.
also state its ability Overcoat allows it to switch in on Foongus's Spore.
idk if you should mention its weakness to Stealth Rock in the second line, i think mentioning it on the weaknesses line (how you mention being weak to flyers) would be better fit for it.
i dont agree that Shelmet loses all the momentum of your team. it often carries Baton Pass to generate momentum for the team so just change that to "being passive" or something similar.
give examples of Pokemon that compete with Shelmet (Dwebble, Ferroseed, Onix) for the last sentence.

in moves, its probably best to reword that Spikes line, and just say "deals consistent damage to all grounded Pokemon", so you dont need that bracket about flyers. you should also connect the two sentences in there too.
for your Toxic point, you could probably just remove the first sentence because the second sentence repeats what it says, but with a lot more info.

in set details, mention the use of Impish nature.
and also mention that the defensive EVs hit Eviolite numbers.
"It also helps prevent the rare weather caused chip damage." fix up the wording here a bit, its very odd.

in usage tips, the second and third line could just be merged, mainly because you only mention why (bulk) in one sentence, and how (fighters) in the other.
mention when to use Baton Pass (after setting Spikes, against a check to Shelmet to pivot into a teammate)
also say something about being cautious of using Toxic against Timburr, due to Guts.

in team options, its Volt Switch, not Volt Turn. and i think you can also mention how they can form momentum cores as Shelmet has Baton Pass and they have Volt/Turn.
i kinda disagree with the last point in your team options, Spikes do take long to set up yeah, but pressuring your opponent to switch, and dealing chip damage to anything switching in is what offense wants. Shelmet can also provide momentum with Baton Pass, which doesnt make it suck all momentum. so i'd just remove it.
i would add frail offensive mons here, they appreciate slow pivots and entry hazard users like Shelmet, since it has Baton Pass and Spikes.
spinners could also deserve a mention, since they remove Stealth Rock making it easier for Shelmet to switch in, and dont remove its own hazards unlike defoggers.

in other options, clarify how Curse and Acid Armor work with Baton Pass (passing boosts).
mention Encore, as it prevents Shelmet from being full set up bait.
Final Gambit is also worthy of a mention here, allowing to to act as a suicide lead providing some momentum.
clarify what immunity from Spore Shelmet has (Overcoat)

in checks & counters, give examples of Fire types.
you still left the "describe why..." there in the Flying type section. and give examples of Flying types.
mention Kabuto in the Rock type section, it can spin away hazards and beat Shelmet with Rock moves. also Onix is worth a mention since it can prevent Shelmet from setting up Spikes with Taunt, then KO with Rock Blast.
you seem to tell us that Shelmet is a pivot throughout the match, so i'd also mention that many of these Rock types can set up Stealth Rock, which hurts Shelmets switch in opportunities.
i'd remove the "super effective moves" point, since you just covered all three of Shelmet's weaknesses before, making it unnecessary.

good shit

Implement Elec's check, it's good. Also do:

[OVERVIEW]
  • Mention examples of Flying-types
  • Mention that Shelmet is Taunt bait. Really heavy Taunt bait.
[SET]
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Leech Life
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Eviolite
ability: Overcoat
nature: Impish
evs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 236 SpD
  • Not only is BP super important for Shelmet, Toxic is also bad. Spritzee has Aroma, Mudbray has Rest, Alolan Grimer and Ferro are immune, Vullaby forces Shelmet out anyway. When you did hit a nice target, it racks up very slowly meaning Shelmet will practically never stall anything out. Move it to Other Options
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Remove Toxic
  • Shelmet is quite bulky, so Recover gives it extra longevity. Remove this part. The second sentence is enough.
Set Details
========
  • Go more in depth on bulk EVs. Outside of them hitting Evio numbers which Elec mentioned, these HP EVs also minimize rocks damage, so clarify that. If there are any specific calcs this hits, mention those.
Usage Tips
========
  • Remove Toxic mention
  • Start with saying that Shelmet should focus on Spike stacking, as that's its main role
Team Options
========
  • Mention wallbreakers for the switches they force
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Add Toxic

I think I was mad when I was writing that first draft because I didn't write everything out like I normally do. Lol.

Thanks Elec. and Xayah!
