- Substitute / Thunder Wave
[SET COMMENTS]
Dragapult provides great offensive support for Dragon teams, being an effective form of status spreading thanks to its great Speed and ability, Infiltrator. This allows it to bypass Substitute to inflict status on foes hiding behind them, enabling it to effectively check Iron Defense Zamazenta. Furthermore, Infiltrator allows Dragapult to render dual screens useless, thus improving the Fairy matchup. Will-O-Wisp weakens common switch-ins to Dragapult like Iron Hands, Alolan Muk, and Hisuian Goodra, reducing their offensive capabilities. Hex takes advantage of Dragapult's great status spreading to deal high damage to afflicted foes. Draco Meteor can be run over Dragon Darts, both when Substitute is not being used and if it needs to handle Archaludon and Gouging Fire in a better way. However, Dragon Darts is preferred, since the Special Attack drop from Draco Meteor is undesirable when run alongside Substitute. Substitute allows Dragapult to take advantage of passive walls such as Toxapex and Clodsire to spread status more safely. Alternatively, Thunder Wave can be used to target faster threats such as +1 Volcarona and Choice Scarf Sneasler. However, Substitute is the preferred option, since most foes that outspeed Dragapult can OHKO it outright, but Substitute must only be run with Leftovers as an item. 148 Special Attack EVs allow Dragapult to OHKO Flutter Mane with Hex after it is statused, while 108 Attack EVs further improve the power of Dragon Darts.
Early-game wallbreakers such as Choice Band Dragonite and Choice Specs Latios appreciate Dragapult's status spreading, with Latios fearing less from Iron Hands's Ice Punch. Dragonite threatens Corviknight, Alolan Muk, Hisuian Goodra, and Heatran, while Latios targets Toxapex and Iron Hands. Steel-type partners such as Archaludon and Hisuian Goodra can take hits from offensive threats to Dragapult, with Archaludon taking hits from Kingambit and Meowscarada and threatening back with Body Press, further helped by Stamina, as well as setting up Stealth Rock. Hisuian Goodra threatens a multitude of Fairy-types including Iron Valiant, Flutter Mane, and Enamorus. Raging Bolt handles Water-types that can cause Dragapult trouble such as Azumarill and Empoleon. Lastly, Dragapult's ability to stallbreak and weaken walls with status opens the door for setup sweepers like Roaring Moon, Garchomp, and Gouging Fire to sweep late-game.

Dragapult @ Choice Specs

Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
- Thunderbolt / U-turn
[SET COMMENTS]
Dragapult makes for a great special wallbreaker and late-game cleaner on Dragon teams by virtue of its great coverage and high Speed, making it the fastest unboosted Pokemon in the metagame. Furthermore, a great ability in Infiltrator allows it to be effective against types that commonly run dual screens like Fairy and Ice, and it can bypass Substitute from setup sweepers such as Spectrier. Draco Meteor and Shadow Ball form an incredible STAB move combination that targets a great number of threats and is only resisted by a few. Flamethrower targets Ice-types like Alolan Sandslash, Frosmoth, and Alolan Ninetales, as well as Steel-types like Corviknight, Scizor, and Klefki. Thunderbolt threatens bulky Water- and Flying-types such as Toxapex, Primarina, and Mandibuzz. U-turn allows Dragapult to bring in one of its teammates safely into foes that check it like Swampert, Alolan Muk, and Ting-Lu. However, Thunderbolt is preferred, since it doesn't render Dragapult entirely helpless against Primarina and Azumarill.
Archaludon provides Stealth Rock support and grants defensive coverage against Kingambit. Early-game wallbreakers such as Nasty Plot Hydreigon, Choice Specs Latios, and Choice Specs Kyurem make for excellent partners, as they remove Dragapult's checks so that it can easily clean up late-game. Hydreigon handles bulky Gouging Fire and Articuno, Latios threatens bulky Poison-types like Galarian Weezing and Clodsire, and Kyurem targets bulky Ground-types like Clodsire, Gliscor, and Ting-Lu, as well as Heatran. Gouging Fire's part-Fire typing allows it to matchup well against Fairy-types such as Flutter Mane, Iron Valiant, and Clefable. Garchomp is a great partner, as it sets up Spikes to aid Dragapult's wallbreaking and cleaning, and it can potentially sweep late-game with Swords Dance and Scale Shot. Dragapult appreciates speed control from Choice Scarf users like Roaring Moon and Latias, as Roaring Moon threatens Choice Scarf Iron Valiant, Latias, and Gholdengo, while Latias not only outspeeds and threatens Choice Scarf Great Tusk and boosted Gouging Fire, but it can also give its Choice Scarf to a wall with Trick. In addition, it provides Healing Wish support for Dragapult. Dragapult's role as a wallbreaker is appreciated by setup sweepers like Raging Bolt and Dragonite, which benefit from the removal of Alolan Ninetales and Sableye so they can safely sweep late-game.
