National Dex Almost Any Ability is a format that lives up to its name; Pokemon in this metagame have access to "almost every ability" with the exception of a few that me, the council and the community deem broken or unhealthy. With new abilities at your disposal, new, old and even some unanticipated threats emerge from unexpected places!

Clauses
  • Ability Clause = 2: A player may not have three Pokemon with the same Ability on a team.
  • Endless Battle Clause: A player may not intentionally prevent an opponent from being able to end the game without forfeiting.
    • For example, a Slowbro holding a Leppa Berry can create an endless battle using the moves Recycle, Heal Pulse, Slack Off, and Block. To do so, Slowbro traps one of the opponent's Pokemon, PP stalls it, and heals Struggle damage indefinitely using Heal Pulse and Slack Off.
  • Evasion Clause: A Pokemon may not have either Double Team or Minimize in its moveset.
  • OHKO Clause: A Pokemon may not have the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold in its moveset.
  • Species Clause: A player may not have two Pokemon with the same National Pokédex number on a team.
    • For example, using a team with two Koffing would break this clause.
    • Using different formes on the same team, such as Rotom-W and Rotom-C, also breaks the clause since they share the same Pokédex number (#479).
  • Sleep Moves Clause: A player may not use a move that induces sleep as a primary effect, such as Hypnosis.
  • Terastal Clause: A player may not Terastallize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
"Why can't I use abilities on Pokemon that get them naturally in standard play?"
Answer: "Native Users" don't exactly exist in AAA.

Question: Why doesn't Triage affect Bitter Blade?
Answer: Ask GameFreak, but that is the correct implementation. Triage does not boost Bitter Blade.

Question: Do Mega Evolutions retain ability changes?
Answer: No, once a Pokemon mega evolves it will use its standard ability, e.g. Mega Swampert will always change its ability to Swift Swim.

So NDAAA exists, and there's a few issues. First up, Tera is more broken than freeing Zacian into this tier, and I am completely fucking serious here. Unless this tier bans Tera, I see absolutely no way that this metagame will be healthy. Secondly, Poison Heal is also free, because why the hell not. Poison Heal is on the same level as Fur Coat if not better, and if it's gonna be legal, so should that. Both enable stupid dumb strong setup, after all! Finally, Great Tusk is legal, so prepare to build around that thing on every single team ever. The combination of all of these has given me an idea to make the most unholy abomination ever:

GOD HELP YE (Great Tusk) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake / literally anything in its moveset
- Knock Off / literally anything in its moveset
BEHOLD, THE MOST BROKEN MON IN THE METAGAME! Find an answer to this set for me. Please, go ahead, find one, because I am fucking STRUGGLING to. Flutter Mane? Dies to Earthquake Tera Water. Naganadel? Click spin, die to EQ. Genesect? Predict the Tera right or instantly die. By the way, once all of these guys get banned, there literally just isn't an answer in the game. Nothing stops you from getting to +6 and clicking buttons until the opponent dies. Tl;dr ban Poison Heal, ban Tera, ban Great Tusk, because if this gets banned, I can just run Regen instead of PHeal.

tera is supposed to be banned dw, and pheal is being talked about as a pre-emptive ban anyway altho im personally for a test first bc of the more offensive nature of the tier rn (weav, blace etc are legal). as for tusk, the spin meta is noticeably more open here so idt thats gonna be as overcentralising at least.
So this thread has been long awaited and I'm very excited to see how these metagames turn out. I wanted to personally talk about some potentially over-powered sets in AAA which may or may not be completely obvious. There isn't any reasonable amount of testing I have gone through to conclude that these Pokemon should be banned, just some observations and playing around in the teambuilder.

:sv/Chi-Yu:
Chi-Yu is probably the most eye-catching unban due to it's nature of completely reigning over tiers and negating any attempt at building something other than offense. I'm aware that it's actually legal in regular AAA too so we'll see how it fairs in NatDex. Choice Specs has insane breaking power with Overheat and has a myriad of abilities that pair very well with it. Nasty Plot is also terrifying and I do like it more than Choice Specs due to MGLO and SFLO but both are impeccable wallbreakers. Overall, not sure if this goldfish stays in the tier for long, however, it will be fun to use while it's still here.
:Chi-Yu: :Choice Specs:

:sv/Flutter Mane:
Another broken SV Pokemon is brought back and now with a chance to use an actual ability. I'll probably always hate Flutter Mane due to the obscene amount of coverage it gets and it's general "brokeness" due to the STAB combination and stats. This is another Pokemon that utilizes Choice Specs very well but it has more coverage and better stats offensively. Calm Mind is very promising and I'm liking the potential abilities that can go along with it. I still hate this Pokemon, ban it please.

:sv/Houndstone:
Houndstone is honestly not that broken compared to the other two, at least in my opinion. I can see this thing being a menace behind Sticky Web but even with a Choice Scarf it's really slow and gets completely walled by Normal-types. The only good ability on it would be Supreme Overlord, enabling Last Respects further but I can see certain defensive sets working with Body Press + Will-O-Wisp.

Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Last Respects
- Shadow Sneak

:sv/Naganadel:
Here's ANOTHER Choice Specs user which'll probably completely ruin any and every specially defensive wall. Not much to say about Naganadel except it's probably getting booted, hopefully alongside the first two I've already mentioned. As said before, this thing is liking Choice Specs, a lot. Only possible thing "walling" this would be something like Vessel of Ruin or RegenVest Heatran which... I'm not entirely sure even work as sets but you get my point. Game Freak is actually handing out Nasty Plot at this point, like why? +2 252 SpA Life Orb Dragon's Maw Naganadel Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Vessel of Ruin Heatran: 211-248 (54.6 - 64.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

flutter is def broken but the others are definitely manageable (houndstone wont be able to abuse eterrain as much in nd). naganadel was even legal at the end of gen 7 so its not something that should be a major issue

First up, thanks for the response. Maybe want to try updating the post, it seems very not accurate atm. Secondly, one of the big things Naganadel does that it didn’t do in gen 8 is Dragon’s Maw. At +2, Naganadel is bulky enough to take any one hit, and unless you’re a fire immune Magearna, you will not live it. Ever. Seriously, Chansey takes 70% MINIMUM from a +2 Draco, and physically defensive ferrothorn just outright dies. It doesn’t really take up an ability slot, either; nothing else is using Dragon’s Maw. Also, it’s stupid fast.

adding on on the AAA issues: stakeout and opulse appear to be free, this is a p big issue since this is FS-less and eg cb tusk can just kill corv, opulse has victini clicking buttons, pheal is also broken as stated above. you should prob get rid of hadron too LOL

[calcs]
252 Atk Choice Band Orichalcum Pulse Victini V-create vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Garganacl in Sun: 292-344 (72.2 - 85.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Pure Power Great Tusk Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 274-324 (68.6 - 81.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (pure is equal to stakeout and this is assuming intim corv)
252 SpA Choice Specs Hadron Engine Xurkitree Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4+ SpD Eviolite Chansey in Electric Terrain: 429-505 (60.9 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
this is also a mistake, nice catch. code hasnt been updated in months and were just catching up now

:Flutter Mane:
Flutter Mane's blistering speed, impeccable coverage, unresisted STAB combination, and offensive prowess leave it too difficult to handle. The overall flexibility of it's movepool and wide array of sets allow Flutter Mane to sabotage switch-ins, leaving it only walled by the likes of Blissey which it annoys with Taunt and Substitute and certain Vessel of Ruin users due to immediate offensive pressure offered through Beads of Ruin, Hadron Engine, and Sheer Force among many other abilities. Due to it's mostly unmatched speed tier, revenge killing Flutter Mane is no easy task and can only be done naturally by the likes of Barraskewda, Zamazenta, and Iron Bundle which are also undermined by Choice Scarf sets. As said before, Flutter Mane has super-effective coverage for most if not all defensive answers, most notably Thunderbolt hitting Corviknight, Toxapex, and Tapu Fini and Psyshock targetting Clodsire as well as dealing considerable damage to Blissey if needed. All things considered, Flutter Mane is way too unhealthy for the metagame.

:Naganadel:
Naganadel is an overwhelming wallbreaker, capable of obliterating any wall daring to switch in. Naganadel has no issue spamming Dragon's Maw boosted Draco Meteors due to it's Poison typing checking Fairy-types like Tapu Fini and Fire Blast eviscerating most Steel-types. Boosting it's Special Attack even further with Nasty Plot, it's able to break past Well-Baked Body users like Ferrothorn due to the sheer pressure of Draco Meteor. Unaware Blissey/Chansey are notable switch-ins, however, even they don't like the potential poison chance coming from Sludge Bomb/Sludge Wave. Naganadel's comfortable speed tier and adequate bulk allow it to survive most revenge killing attempts and outpaces most Ground-types anyways. Unlike Flutter Mane, Naganadel is predictable and has a straightforward moveset but that just shows how powerful it is and that's too much of a threat to say.

:Genesect:
Genesect's set variability exceeds absolutely every other Pokemon. From Shift Gear and Sheer Force to Choice Scarf and Regenerator, to even Choice Band with Aerilate, Genesect is a bundle of surprises and will more often than not sweep your team because you didn't account for that one ability or move it's capable of using. It's obnoxious amount of coverage leaves it completely unwallable and will always keep you guessing what it'll do next. Would-be Steel-type checks like Ferrothorn and Corviknight are threatened by Blaze Kick and Flamethrower, Great Tusk and Ting-Lu are answered with Pixilate/Aerilate-boosted Extreme Speed as well as Ice Beam, and Water-types like Toxapex and Dondozo can't keep up with Tinted Lens. Overall, Genesect is way too powerful to be kept legal.

:Toxic Orb:
Poison Heal is a pretty controversial ability as it's potency is an upgrade for any Pokemon. Notably used by Great Tusk and Tapu Fini, it offers an immunity to status ailments and passive recovery spiraling Bulk Up and Calm Mind sets out of control if left unchecked. Poison Heal exerts a tremendous amount of pressure and allows for both defensive and offensive Pokemon to sit on teams. Although the ability is really powerful, it's not completely overwhelming and can be bypassed through general offensive pressure and the niche Gastro Acid and Skill Swap. The council would like to further examine Poison Heal in the metagame as there are more notable threats such as the three Pokemon being quick banned.

Tagging hidin to implement the changes into the resource post.

Xurkitree is exceptionally easy to revenge kill and needs to be Choice-locked to 2HKO what appears to be non-Vessel of Ruin Chansey, meaning Ground-types are your friend.

pheal:
252 Atk Sword of Ruin Chien-Pao Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scream Tail: 178-210 (47.9 - 56.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and Poison Heal

First of all, Chien-Pao is banned and Poison Heal is being looked at yeah, pretty strong lol

Edit: Realized your first bit was on Hadron Engine and not Xurkitree, apologies. Hadron Engine is definitely one of the top offensive abilities and might be looked into considering Orichalcum Pulse was banned but I personally don't find it too overbearing. Stuff like Blissey/Chansey/Ferrothorn and RegenVest Pokemon waste turns and generally sit on most users.

Hello! Apologies for the long amount of time with no tiering in ND AAA. With that being said, there's a lot of news today.

Secondly, Runoisch has stepped down from their position as council member. Thank you for your contributions to the tier!

With a Choice Scarf, Dracovish could rip through just about everything that wasn't using Water Absorb or Storm Drain, and even those often folded to Earthquake, Outrage, or some other coverage move like Psychic Fangs. In order to not force everyone into running Water Absorb Enamorus-T, Dracovish was banned.
:iron-hands: Iron Hands is an oppressive meta force with two sets: the deadly consistent damage and special walling of RegenVest, and the near instant win potential of the Triage Belly Drum set. Electric/Fighting is a monstrous STAB combination that puts heavy pressure on mons that aren't Landorus-T, and Landorus-T gets demolished by Ice Punch, making it a risky switch-in. This is without mentioning its access to Volt Switch, giving it easy sweep potential, or Swords Dance, allowing it to break massive holes in teams or potentially just win against offense not carrying Dazzling. For all these reasons and more, Iron Hands was a unanimous ban.
:zamazenta: Zamazenta-Hero was an incredibly dangerous wallbreaker, wall, sweeper, just about everything you can imagine. With its newfound access to Body Press in SV, Zama-H cleaved through offense with utmost ease with abilities like Tinted Lens or Poison Heal. Against fat, the Choice Band set ripped holes into every wall switched in thanks to Tinted Lens, Adaptability, or Tough Claws. This resulted in Zama-H being, again, a unanimous ban.

:hoopa-unbound: Hoopa-Unbound was an absolutely monstrous wallbreaker in every aspect. With Choice Band Hustle Hyperspace Fury, Hoopa-U could bypass Hustle's decreased accuracy and perform downright dizzying damage calculations, such as nearly OHKOing max defense Corviknight and 2HKOing physically defensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rocks.
:baxcalibur: Baxcalibur is possibly the most dangerous sweeper in the game thanks to Technician Loaded Dice Icicle Spear. After a Dragon Dance, it outspeeds every non-scarfer and rips through just about everything. The only true "check" was Poison Heal Tapu Fini, and even that died very easily with minor chip.
:enamorus: Enamorus-Incarnate was a horrifying wallbreaker that used an SFLO set to cleave through any and all teams. With Play Rough to beat Blissey and Chansey and good coverage in Earth Power and Mystical Fire, Enamorus-I proved to be almost impossible to truly switch into without a specially defensive Well-Baked Body Corviknight.
:blacephalon: Blacephalon used an MGLO set to spam Mind Blown and Shadow Balls effortlessly while absorbing Toxics and not caring about Stealth Rocks at all. What makes it broken, though, is its access to Toxic, Knock Off, and Hidden Power. With all three of these options combined, it could beat basically anything that would even try to switch into it, such as RegenVest Landorus-T.
:sneasler: Sneasler has a dizzyingly high attack stat with blazing fast speed and the move Dire Claw, allowing it to simply hax its way through any and all bad matchups. On top of this, it has access to a STAB Close Combat to destroy Steel types switching into Dire Claw, U-Turn to gain momentum, and Switcheroo to cripple walls. With Tough Claws or Serene Grace, it could hax its way through literally any matchup if it so choosed.
:archeops: Archeops is a Pokemon notorious for absurd stats held back by a debilitating ability. This is rectified in AAA with access to Magic Guard Head Smash, absolutely wrecking balance and offense alike. With U-Turn, Earthquake, Knock Off, and Roost, Archeops could stay alive consistently thanks to not taking any chip damage and constantly dish out massive damage with no risk, often winning on the spot with minor chip.
:xurkitree: Xurkitree was one of the biggest winners of gen 9's new ability, Hadron Engine. With Tail Glow, Xurkitree could click Rising Voltage and simply kill whatever was in front of it. +3 Hadron-boosted Rising Voltage cleanly OHKO'd max SpD Blissey from full HP, and all Grounds were ripped apart by either Hidden Power Ice or Energy Ball.

I COULD BE BANNED!
imma make an AAA post about a few pokemon on the watchlist and what could be added to the watchlist. these are purely my opinions and i am new to the metagame so i might get a few things wrong
:sv/noivern:
its a shame to say this to one of my favourite pokemon, but this thing is not ok in any way, scarfers are some of the only to outspeed noivern, aerilate hits LIKE A TRUCK, and this constricts teambuilding so much. even would-be checks like blissey are crippled with switcheroo choice specs sets. pls ban this it is unbelievably unhealthy.
Noivern @ Choice Specs
Ability: Aerilate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Boomburst
- Draco Meteor
- Switcheroo
- Flamethrower

:sv/keldeo-resolute:
this is also broken, but not as broken as noivern degree, there are a few things that outspeed keldeo but with a proper ability such as tinted lens it is annoying to deal with. ghosts / water absorb core walls this, but this still seems unhealthy. checks such as blissey are melted by sercet sword, and if it's in a bad matchup, it can pivot with flip turn, so banning keldeo is a good idea. (also to stop Giyu from running water absorb corviknight)
Keldeo-Resolute @ Choice Specs
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Flip Turn

:sv/zoroark-hisui:
the third special attacking pokemon on our watchlist and this one doesn't seem as broken. sure it has the coveted ghost / fighting coverage, but regenvesters can block attacks decently. i think hisuian zoroark will get banned, but now's not the time for it
Zoroark-Hisui @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Voice
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Nasty Plot

:sv/gengar:
this is basically the same as zoroark-hisui except it has higher sp.atk and more coverage but a worse typing. if hisuian zoroark gets banned, so will this. other than that this is alright ig.
Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Nasty Plot
- Sludge Bomb

:sv/gholdengo:
not really broken in my eyes, hard walled by regenvests and is really slow without a choice scarf, making it predictable and easily KOed by sucker punch users such as mega mawile and weavile. sure it has trick to cripple blissey and can run immunity abilities such as well-baked body or earth eater but the speed of the meta will be it's downfall. gholdengo seems quite healthy in the meta for now and will be good.
Gholdengo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Well-Baked Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Make It Rain
- Shadow Ball
- Nasty Plot
- Trick

:sv/great-tusk:
yaay our first physical attacker. currently this is kinda bad given the state of the meta of hard hitting special attackers but great tusk's time to get banned may or may not come around. when majority of these pokemon are banned great tusk will probably be banned. or poison heal might get the banhammer instead.
Great Tusk @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Bulk Up
- Earthquake
- Body Press
- Rapid Spin

:sv/weavile:
this is basically our only noivern check that's on the watchlist which doesn't utilize a scarf. weavile is probably gonna get banned because high attack and speed and nuke stabs. it seems quite good in this meta and wouldn't be surprised if a ban came up
Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Triple Axel
- Ice Shard
- Knock Off
- Feint Attack

:sv/victini:
last watchlist mon and this one is the all rounder that is infamous for one of the most op moves of all time; v-create. whether it be tough claws or desolate land, victini is not a pokemon to sneeze at. it's also quite slow unboosted, so running choice scarf is recommended but it is quite strong and a ban doesn't surprise me at all
Victini @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Zen Headbutt

:sv/mawile-mega::sv/medicham-mega:
these two aren't on the watchlist but seeing these on there after a ban slate is reasonable. intrepid sword + huge power seems really powerful, despite the low and middling speed respectively. however these pokemon can sweep teams if given the slightest opportunity
replay of mega mawile sweep: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nationaldex-1905939715
Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intrepid Sword
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Def

- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Play Rough
- Iron Head
Medicham @ Medichamite
Ability: Intrepid Sword
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt
- Ice Punch

:keldeo: Keldeo is a great Pokemon in standard play let down by a lackluster ability in Justified. This is rectified in AAA through access to two incredible options in Primordial Sea and Tinted Lens. With either of these abilities and a Choice Scarf or Choice Specs, Keldeo bowled through just about every team that lacked a Water Absorb Corviknight or Enamorus-T thanks to Tinted Lens Secret Sword. Even against soft checks such as Desolate Land Iron Moth or specially defensive Tapu Fini, Keldeo could use tech such as Hidden Power Ground or Grass to mow through them with incredible efficiency.
:weavile: Weavile made use of Technician Triple Axel and Beat Up to kill anything that wasn't a physically defense Tapu Fini, as even specially defensive Tapu Fini got 2HKO'd by Triple Axel if not running Poison Heal. Additionally, Pursuit made even soft checks not safe to bring in, as it could trap and remove them with minimal chip. Knock Off made it even more egregious to deal with, thanks to making it unpunishable by Rocky Helmet.
:noivern: Noivern gets access to Aerilate-boosted STAB Boomburst in AAA, giving it dizzying damage calculations with Choice Specs. Despite checks like Blissey or RegenVest Silvally-Electric working quite well at walling Boombursts, Noivern could very easily abuse their presence with Switcheroo, U-Turn, and Super Fang. To make matters worse, Noivern could use non-Choice sets such as Heavy-Duty Boots support variants that focused on spamming Super Fang, making it even more annoying to deal with and near impossible to reliably beat.
:toxic-orb: Poison Heal has proved to be one of the most metagame warping abilities yet, allowing status immunity and 12.5% healing per turn. Sweepers such as Bulk Up Great Tusk, Calm Mind Tapu Fini, Bulk Up Buzzwole, and Calm Mind Suicune abused this to its fullest, with their immense bulk combined with immunity to burn and Toxic allowing them to win on the spot unless specifically countered by mons carrying abilities like Unaware, and even those often got shut down rather easily with some chip.
:heliolisk: Electrify turns any and all moves into Electric-type moves when it hits the target. Lightning Rod and Volt Absorb are legal abilities. You can see the problem. Despite being quite underpowered a lot of the time, Electrify remained as an uncompetitive and frankly silly way to cheese out wins against teams that had their scarfer removed. Due to Boltund carrying this move, the council has decided to ban Electrify instead of Heliolisk, as it removes the most problems with the least amount of bans.

:victini: Though Victini is incredibly strong with V-Creates and Blue Flares being thrown around, it has yet to be proven to be overwhelming due to the existence of good checks such as Well-Baked Body Gholdengo and Ferrothorn. However, the council will be keeping a very close eye on Victini, on top of the other mons in our newly updated watchlist shown below.

Quick Ban...
Giyu
Result
Zeraora
BAN
BAN
BAN
3-0 Ban

Reasoning...
Zeraora has proven to be too powerful for the metagame due to its wide array of coverage options, blazing Speed tier, and ability to use mixed movesets. Two of its most prominent movesets are Hadron Engine and Tough Claws, see here:
:Zeraora: :Life Orb: / :Expert Belt: / :Choice Specs:
Zeraora @ Life Orb / Expert Belt / Choice Specs
Ability: Hadron Engine
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty / Timid Nature
- Rising Voltage
- Knock Off / Close Combat / Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Grass Knot
The combination of Rising Voltage and Hadron Engine broke through bulky resists like Ferrothorn and wreaked immense havoc on slower neutral targets, which are common due to Zeraora surpassing the Speed tier of 400. Hidden Power Ice and Grass Knot nailed switch-ins like Landorus, Garchomp, and Great Tusk, further booster by Hadron Engine. Knock Off would remove Assault Vests from the likes of Meloetta, Landorus, and Garchomp, easily OHKOIng them with the correct coverage while Close Combat broke through Hisuian Goodra.
:Zeraora: :Life Orb: / :Expert Belt:
Zeraora @ Life Orb / Expert Belt
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Close Combat / Play Rough
- Knock Off
- Grass Knot
Tough Claws worked great in conjunction with Zeraora's Attack stat and boosted every coverage move it would ever want, including Grass Knot. Due to this set's physical orientation, Zeraora has to lose Hidden Power Ice, however, with new access to Play Rough, Zeraora beats nearly every Dragon-type and still deals considerable damage to its switch-ins. All things considered, Zeraora is too fast and versatile for the tier, justifying the 3-0 banslate.

:celesteela:Celesteela has a nice defensive profile with the same typing as Corviknight which means theoretically it can do similar nice defensive shenanigans. However the issue is I find it finding it outclassed by Corv with actual reliable recovery and U-turn most of the time. Is probably still nice with Leech Seed but I don't really see it personally.

:Latios: :latias:Have decent defensive and offensive profiles with respectable Fighting and Fire resistances and a decent SpA stat, however I'm not exactly what sets for it exactly exist in the current meta so I'll just mention it here. Probably decent though (maybe MGLO or smth).

:skarmory:It's Corviknight without U-turn (unviable), but it does get Spikes (viable). Not exactly sure where it would've gone but it's probably ok, in most cases I'd just use Corv except on hazard-stack fat/stall though.

:mandibuzz: It was quite decent last gen but I'm not exactly sure if it's of much usage now. It's typing really isn't all that great with a Fighting neutrality and Stone Edge weakness that can let it get broken through by a ton of breakers and a Fairy weakness also means it gets dumpstered on by Koko and Mawile. Even stuff like Gambit can Knock it and then its SR weakness is troubling. Probably still has a use case with its bulk, Defog and U-turn though.

:roaring-moon: Looks like an ok breaker with Dragon Dance, but does struggle into walls like Great Tusk, Tapu Fini and Buzzwole, although Z-Moves can make it somewhat scary. Haven't really seen it and I don't believe in it but otherwise it can probably fish for some 6-0's against Corv dependent cores (like my teams LOL). RegenVest sets have a much harder burden of needing a hard-answer for the Fairy-types so I don't rate it too highly.

:blastoise: It's Shell Smashing time. Probably has a niche with the broken move but again I need to see it to believe it, and it might struggle into some of the RegenVest mons.

:stakataka: :glastrier:Trick room bots except maybe Stakataka? Earth Eater sets are maybe real but really it's mostly going brr in TR with Steelworker or Adapt. Glastrier is similar, with Technician Loaded Dice Icicle Spear being quite nice and putting out huge amounts of damage but only really fits on TR for obvious reasons which makes it very niche.

:scream-tail: While a very popular pick in CG AAA (for now) Scream Tail suffers a lot more and I've rarely seen it in my games with others players, most likely because its passivity is just EXTREMELY exploitable in this offence loaded meta and while Unaware would seem to nullify that, it doesn't matchup well into the meta anymore, particularly with Gholdengo being a very popular pick. That being said Unaware is an amazing ability rn imo I just haven't found great abusers... yet.

:toxapex: Probably viable, however compared to other physical Fire type checks it suffers from an annoying weakness to Victini's furiously powerful Bolt Strike. It also is very passive, although does regain Scald/Knock back which is nice. Prankster for the annoying setup in the tier or Triage Drummers could work, or even VA could work maybe though. Need to see it to believe it though.

:chi-yu: I know Giyu was raving on about SFLO but I need to see it to believe it again. It works well into Gholdengo (although I imagine most carry FBlast for Pursuit Gambit) and has decent power although is rather slow and rocks weak, with RegenVest mons like Swampert or the Blobs able to take one and pivot out. Need to see it to-

:meowscarada: Looks ok in the current meta. Great Tusk gets Flower Tricked, Gholdengo gets Knocked and Corv gets Knocked and U-turned on for infinity, although is generally quite weak so I would rather it prove itself before ranking it.

:smeargle: Could be a funky Sticky Web setter with Prankster, but I'm not sure if Webs is a viable playstyle at all as I haven't seen it, but it does sound pretty decent.

:slowbro-mega: :latias-mega: Saw some wacky Dauntless Shield -> CM bulky setup sets that fished decently well but I'm not entirely sure are actually worth using... although I am ranking some wack already.... well whatever, we'll see if it works out in the kickoff tour.

:gholdengo:No, this is not Gholdengo, but a stand-in for Good as Gold (even though I am ranking mons). There is no consistent GaG user I've seen, in fact I'm the only one I've seen to try GaG hazard stack (which went pretty badly) but it's surely a viable archetype... eventually...

Balance

:corviknight::swampert::chansey::terrakion::zapdos-galar::azelf:
:kingambit::chansey::great-tusk::corviknight::manaphy::gholdengo:

Balance teams which have performed okay in tests. 1st team is rather dependent on Tapu-Lele to break or go bust and lenient on the special side (also cheesed by fat setup Suicune) RegenVest Swamp is probably better here tbh but eh. Bulletproof Excadrill is a funny tech but is replaceable for other electric answers. 2nd is similarly reliant on Victini (which is replaceable for X breaker) but has a few other ways to wear down the enemy like from annoying Ferro + Fini. 3rd is pretty sketch defensively (could run boots Vessel Blissey here and maybe run Barra/Slither Wing over Gapdos for more setup control) but relies on the double Fighting duo to break through. Psysurge Azelf is great anti-offense glue, and also necessary because Triage Hariyama/Kommo-o suck. 4th team is untested and made rather quickly and super coping against Triage but shrug. Is also quite slow and dependent on Manaphy to really break or otherwise slug it out with RegenTusk in a balance war (SR can go on Tusk but I like BU, or go on Gambit)

Janky Stall/Fat

:mew::kingambit::garganacl::ferrothorn::gholdengo::chansey:
:buzzwole::jirachi::dhelmise::chansey::ferrothorn::gholdengo:

These teams are kinda bad lol. Originally they were meant to be MSableye Fat because MBounce is broken, and then GaG hazard-stack but I ended up evolving the team in a really janky direction and now they're bad lol. I believe Fat can be cool, and just maybe MSableye but this isn't it... yet. Need to find a god Unaware mon like CG AAA STail. But hey here's something I guess, for inspiration (also these teams fall flat to MSableye itself which is kinda funny).

HO

:mawile-mega::mew::hariyama::corviknight::volcarona::kingambit:
:slowbro::Porygon2::stakataka::glastrier::kingambit::mawile-mega:
:smeargle::medicham-mega::rampardos::tapu-lele::gholdengo::terrakion:

Fuck it, HO time. With the plethora of offensive mons freed in NatDex, it isn't very hard to clobber together braindead HO teams that kinda work and here are some ok results (I think). Really not much to explain, you win in 10 turns or you lose in 10 with the plethora of offensive mons to throw at the opponents defensive core. Rampardos is a meme but I can believe in the meme. Glastrier is very powerful but Stakataka is kinda eh. Setup Mew is pretty fun and cheesed quite a few wins, fat setup is something that needs to be watched out for.

____________

Now that the dump is over, keep in mind that this is all before the kickoff tournament and is mainly based off theorycrafting and also the tests I managed to scrounge up. Meta is pretty fun and fresh with how new it is and the amount of options available, which might be a bit to its detriment as well. Offense is all the rage, with it also being much easier to build. While balance/fat I believe can make their own way in the meta fine enough, the offensive pressure from all these options is definitely very strainful on the builder, looking at that VR the offensive mons outnumber the defensive pieces significantly although nothing I feel is overtly broken rn. Maybe we ban Light Clay? Or maybe free 2AC (the rest of the council won't agree to just free it rfn smh) or maybe I'm overreacting and it's not so bad. Triage + Belly Drum is however 100% dumb, so we'll see what will happen there.... maybe I can get Belly Drum banned... In any case, hopefully this dump has helped someone and see you in the kickoff tour.

Reasoning...
Kommo-o and Hariyama have been equally constricting on teambuilding because of their shared Belly Drum + Triage set. Due to Drain Punch's increased priority, counterplay is very minimal and breaks down to teams forced to use a Ghost-type, very bulky resist that doesn't buckle to the Pokemons' coverage moves, or uncommon abilities such as Psychic Surge or Dazzling. Ghost-types like Gengar, Hisuian Zoroark, and Gholdengo are common answers, however, due to their frailty, they all fear +6 coverage moves like Thunder Punch, Bullet Punch, and Headlong Rush, as well as get trapped by a common teammate in Kingambit. Bulky resists also fear the coverage moves and don't always have a way to OHKO these Pokemon while Unaware can be taken advantage of by teammates that don't require setup to put holes into these Pokemon.

A few comments on the VR

  • :zygarde-10%: is probably not A material. It can stomp some matchups but seems quite weak compared to other ground type breakers like Tusk and Lando-T. Loses to a lot of walls like Buzzwole, defensive Tusk and Mew (depending on the sets but still).
  • :volcarona: looks also a bit overrated in a meta where you're going to face counters from time to time, be it unaware Blissey, WBB Corv, regenvest Goodra-h, ... Still strong in HO of course but definitely not splashable.
  • :medicham-mega: and :mawile-mega: might also be a bit too high considering they aren't that much stronger in AAA compared to OU. Yes you get that big starting boost with Intrepid Sword but with all the walls available and Fluffy as an option on stuff like Corv and Gholdengo it's nothing impossible to deal with. Then you're left with a pretty slow mon that will struggle to find opportunities.
  • :buzzwole: is an insane pokémon and can only be A+ minimum even if competing with Great Tusk.
  • :terrakion: shouldn't be two whole ranks above :zapdos-galar: even if it's a bit better. Gapdos hits Tusk and Buzzwole. Either move Gapdos up a rank or Terrak down a rank imo.
  • You guys are a bit harsh on :goodra-hisui: I think. Maybe it's not the most favorable meta for it but the mon cannot be so bad, i'd go with B or B+.
  • Not sure why anyone would use :hoopa: and :darmanitan-galar:, I'd have them UR. Same with :sableye-mega:, it simply doesn't keep up with the breakers. Quite doubtful of :regieleki: as well, at least I'd have it in the same rank as :electrode-hisui:. :marowak-alola: is also probably not worth using.
  • I would rank :zarude: alongside :dhelmise: and probably move that to B+. Zarude was even considered better in gen8, but I see why it would (maybe) not be the case in naaatdex.
  • :mandibuzz: to B+, pretty solid wall that can somewhat deal with the 3 broken Ghost types.
  • Rank :landorus: probably like one rank below :landorus-therian: ? Sflo is a special breaker that gets Knock Off and Superpower to hit Blobs which looks threatening (it was rediscovered towards the end of gen8). The additional speed also makes it worth considering over the therian version as a bulky pivot.
  • Probably rank :hydreigon: like in C, it's still a threat and gets roost back.
  • :tapu bulu: to B or B+ with Zarude and Dhelmise I'd say. Good priority and always a threatening mon (it's not that bad into Intim Corv, forcing Brave Bird and basically trading ; can threaten most other birds with Stone Edge).
  • :toxapex: not being ranked is simply criminal. Prank Pex is A- material.
  • :cinderace: is also like A- or B+, simply because Court Change is a broken move (also mglo can never be so bad).
  • :iron treads: gets fucked by Great Tusk but it's still usable I'd say. WBB and Bulletproof should provide very good utility. B+ish.
  • :golisopod: is a very strong mon. Either Band Tinted or Triage SD. Regen could also have a nice niche (although hard to fit). B or B+.
  • Could probably extend the lower ranks a bit with stuff like :glimmora: (EE), :lopunny-mega: (Intrepid Sword), :moltres: (Desolate Land, gets Weather Ball, was decent in gen8), :talonflame: (MG), :cobalion: (MGLO is really good, probably even B material), :entei: (MGLO, Desolate Land), :arcanine-hisui: (MGLO), :ting-lu: (Regenvest), :scream tail: (Unaware is probably still very strong), :togekiss: (Triage Nasty Plot), :meowscarada: (SoR, Dazzling), :quaquaval: (MGLO), :skeledirge: (Desolate Land, EE), :chesnaught: (WBB, Intim, Fluffy), :mamoswine: (Adapt), :primarina: (Water type can justify it over Togekiss and Lele as a Triage sweeper), :ceruledge: (Desolate Land, SoR), :lucario: (MGLO, Tough Claws), :muk-alola: (Regenvest, the ghosts are allowed), :doublade: (Regen).

I wanted to drop a quick team dump with some successful teams I've used in the AAA Kickoff as well as in regular old friendlies with some other AAA nerds cough LordBox cough. I'm not the greatest builder so there are bound to be flaws in each team but for any of those interested:
CB Zygarde-10% + MGLO Tapu Koko BO (pokepast.es)
Mega Metagross + Galarian Zapdos Balance (pokepast.es)
SFLO Tapu Lele + Choice Scarf Terrakion Balance (pokepast.es)
CB Roaring Moon + MGLO Gholdengo (pokepast.es)
Mega Medicham + Kingambit Balance (pokepast.es)

This has been long overdue but I would like to announce that Atha is now on the AAA council, welcome them with open arms and make sure to congratulate them when you have the chance!

On an another note, due to the wide array of offensive options in the current metagame and minimal counter measures to those options, the council has voted on raising the Ability Clause limit to two abilities instead of one, allowing for more defensive synergy, notably double Regenerator cores. With this change, we hope to see significantly more counter-play to prominent threats like Victini and encourage creativity when teambuilding.

Winners and Losers of 2AC

Let me start off by saying I 100% prefer this meta. 1AC is cool, it was absolutely worth a try, but 2AC is simply better in this scenario. Breakers are too strong and defensive options are too limited. Anyways, onto the actual post. I'll be going down the VR down to the Atier. Anything else after that is probably still pretty good but I just do not care enough to make this post longer than it already is

S Tier
:corviknight: It's still Corviknight. Doesn't really care for 2AC that much, but now it's notable that Regen Corv goes from extremely fake to just really fake. Also you can run double WBB if you're that kind of guy.
:gholdengo: Gholdengo actually gets a little worse from 2AC. Thanks to the increased relevancy of RegenVests like Meloetta and Landorus-T, breaking sets aren't as strong, and the more defensive options stay basically the same. It's still Gholdengo, though, so should be VERY good. And who knows, maybe Regen will see some use.
:great-tusk: This is now the #1 Pokemon. I have never played 2AC NDAAA, but I am saying this with absolute confidence, and if I'm wrong I will be extremely shocked. Great Tusk's only "downside" is having to take up your regen slot, and now that you can run double regen, it's a must on just about every balance team. It sweeps, it spins, it knocks, it just does everything. Honestly pretty broken.
:blissey: Blissey can now actually run Regen without compromising its team! This should help massively with stuff like Zapdos, Tapu Koko, Azelf, Iron Moth, Volcarona, and more. Aside from that, it's definitely a Blissey.

S- Tier
:barraskewda: Nothing changes. You might see a bit more DesoTini now. That's it.
:tapu-koko: Koko also somewhat dislikes 2AC, but it's a mixed bag. While MGLO gets a little worse because of increased RegenVest relevancy, they're also a bit better since you can run double MG and just massacre a lot of balances. Pixilate sets are basically the same but now better, even though I don't like them because Life Orb cringe.
:ferrothorn: Ferrothorn can run Regen now and not handicap you for using it. Ferro really loves having double regen cores to both get Spikes on and to be a part of. Koko's easier, Dengo's easier, just all around a solid mon that now gets even better.
:chansey: See Blissey.
:kingambit: This is a really interesting one. Gambit has two huge buffs with 2AC:
a) It can run defensive abilities more effectively and remain threatening thanks to having a double regen core to back it up
b) It thoroughly destroys a lot of great regen cores with Knock Off and Iron Head
Additionally, hyper offensive sets stay basically the same. It's a huge winner here and it can still always just click Pursuit and win against a lot of targets.

A+ Tier
:tapu-lele: You would assume Lele would really hate the increased relevancy of RegenVest, but it actually doesn't give a fuck about those guys aside from Jirachi and Meloetta because of Psyshock. It's still broken Lele, click buttons and kill. By the way, why is SFLO not a set here? It's the best one. It just clicks buttons and kills everything on the opposing team.
:gengar: Gengar should get worse since SpDef Regen stuff is more viable. The worst part is that its got some REALLY good checks that will be on a lot of teams, like RegenVest Landorus-T and Thunder Wave Blissey. Still very scary in the right circumstances, though, so always be ready for it.
:zoroark-hisui: Zoro-H in theory cares about RegenVest. Zoro-H in practice clicks Body Slam and kills you. There is really not much to say because it also has Knock Off. Eat shit and die I guess.
:victini: Victini doesn't really like Fini becoming more viable since it was already a super good midground for choice sets, but aside from that it's doing fine. Scarf kinda falling out of favor for me, so maybe we see the rise of CBtini and watch it do 90 to Tusk with Deso CB VC.
:terrakion: Terrakion is kinda like Gapdos where you can just pivot on it for eternity and make them guess right twice, and if they do guess right twice they win. Doesn't like stuff like Pert becoming easier to use but it's still Terrak. Button clicker supreme.
:swampert: Really good now. Honestly I think this placement was insanely overrated on the 1AC VR, but now it makes perfect sense. Pert just does not die with Regen, especially considering it does surprisingly good damage with Flip Turn and Earthquake. Also sets up Rocks, plenty of good resists, can probably fit Scald, and even RegenVest sets are kinda eating. That being said, run physdef, it's the best one.

A Tier
:landorus-therian: Landorus is probably one of the biggest winners of 2AC. RegenVest sets are now even more effective than before, checking just about every non-Lele special attacker in the tier. Seriously, not even Volcarona beats this. It's also able to be part of an insane pivot core with stuff like Swampert, Tapu Fini, Buzzwole, Mew, Garchomp, and more. Easily A+ worthy now.
:zapdos: Zapdos doesn't like how much better Lando is, and Ferrothorn being better is pretty annoying. Not much to say about this one aside from that.
:azelf: First off, who uses this. Secondly, it's definitely getting hit hard. Just about every special wall beat it, and now there's way more special walls on most balance teams. Things aren't looking good for Azelf honestly.
:tapu-fini: The queen of SS AAA returns to her full glory. Spamming Knock Off, denying just about any form of hazards with Defog, saying no to sweeps with Taunt, and more, she's back. Also makes for an incredible pivot core with a physdef set. About on par with Swampert now IMO.
:iron-moth: Moth seems to only get worse and worse every time the tier changes. It's still quite good, just not as good as it was before because now 2/3 of the tier just beats it.
:meloetta: I'm not confident in saying how good Meloetta will be in this meta. On one hand, its far easier to slap onto teams with how much it brings. Knock Off, U-Turn, min speed still outspeeds important slow targets, it's great. However, another mon has these traits: Landorus-T. While Meloetta checks Lele better, Lando checks Koko better. While Meloetta has Psyshock, Lando has Earthquake. They're really evenly matched honestly.
:volcarona: Doesn't care, matchup moth keeps fishing, and by god it is going to get a fish.
:zygarde-10: Doesn't like Fini being more popular but aside from that it's effectively the same. I guess it's kinda mid into Ferro, but like...Coil. Oh yeah, regular Zydog doesn't give a fuck. Just spam CB Thousand Arrows.
:medicham-mega: I could just copy paste the first sentence of Zydog for both of these
:mawile-mega: And you wouldn't even notice without me pointing it out.
:buzzwole: Wow, another Fini hater, who would've guessed. Seriously, though, Buzzwole doesn't exactly enjoy how good Tusk is going to be. Maybe we see more Ice Punch? An uptick in Fluffy usage? Who knows.
:mew: Scarf Regen is incredible now. You get this Tricking, Volt Switching, coverage having pivot that also heals constantly. It's amazing! Doesn't exactly check one thing in specific, but really good midground against most of the meta. Just don't go max speed. Duh.

All of these are just my predictions! It's entirely possible, and very likely, that a good majority of these will be wrong. That being said, if Tusk isn't #1, I will eat a dirty sock.
