Staryu is one of the top Pokemon in the tier with its great speed tier, amazing movepool, and a decent ability in Natural Cure allowing it to sponge status. It is able to beat many top Pokemon such as Diglett, Doduo, and Trapinch and is a great choice for teams in general.

[SET COMMENTS]
Hydro Pump is a powerful STAB move that can be used to hit Gastly, Abra, Trapinch, Voltorb and Houndour. Thunderbolt can be used to hit Doduo, Wailmer, opposing Staryu, and Horsea. Ice beam hits Grass-types, Dragon-types and frail Ground-types like Diglett, Cacnea, Bagon, Larvitar, and Onix. Hidden Power Grass can also hit Onix as well as Chinchou, while putting opposing pokemon such as Elekid, and Snubbull in range of other attacks. Rapid Spin allows you to protect the rest of your team from spikes. Thunder Wave makes you able to cripple opposing Pokemon, which can either be used to ruin their speed as well as setting up with other Pokemon later. Common teammates for Staryu include Cubone, as it is the most prevalent abuser of Thunder Wave, Chinchou, Magnemite, and Elekid as they enjoy Staryu's capabilities to beat Diglett and Trapinch, who are able to trap them. Staryu also enjoys having a trapper with it to trap common Electric-type Pokemon that can check Staryu such as Elekid, Voltorb, and Chinchou. Finally, Gastly and Duskull are good teammate as Staryu can beat Houndour, which can Pursuit-trap them.

Porygon: Is unable to be reliably 2HKO'ed by Staryu and is able to steal Natural Cure.
Elekid: Is faster than Staryu and is able to OHKO it with Thunderbolt.
Voltorb: Is also faster than Staryu and can be OHKO'ed by Thunderbolt.
Chinchou: Is able to absorb Thunderbolt and take it out with its own Thunderbolt.
