Monotype Gastrodon (Ground)

Gastrodon (Ground)

QC: Eien / Vid / terrors
GP: Omicron

[OVERVIEW]

Ground
========

* Gastrodon plays an important role on Ground-type teams because of its Water immunity thanks to its ability Storm Drain.
* Its superb defensive typing, including a neutrality to Ice-type attacks, improves Gastrodon's defensive capability, which allows it to counter major threats to Ground-type teams such as Keldeo and Mamoswine.
* Gastrodon has access to reliable recovery in Recover, which is is very important for Gastrodon to function as a wall.
* It has decent but not outstanding overall bulk which leaves Gastrodon vulnerable to wallbreakers and setup sweepers.
* Gastrodon has a major Grass weakness which leaves it vulnerable to Grass-type Pokemon and foes with said coverage.
* Gastrodon has a very low Speed stat along with a weak offensive presence making it very susceptible to Taunt users such as Mew.
* Gastrodon drains momentum from more offensively oriented teams due to its lackluster offensive presence.
* It competes with Seismitoad as a Water-type counter, as Seismitoad has a superior offensive movepool and is fast enough to check threats such as Azumarill and Crawdaunt.

[SET]
name: Defensive (Ground)
move 1: Scald
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Recover
move 4: Toxic / Acid Armor
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Scald is Gastrodon's primary Water-type STAB attack and can potentially burn them.
* Earthquake is an important Ground-type STAB move that allows Gastrodon to target Pokemon that resist Scald such as Tentacruel. It is used over Earth Power to guarantee breaking through Calm Mind Keldeo's Substitutes.
* Recover allows Gastrodon to stay healthy and properly function as a wall. It is also necessary for stalling out opponents with Toxic or setting up with Acid Armor.
* Toxic is used to wear down opposing walls that are not immune to Poison such as Slowbro and Zapdos.
* Acid Armor is a particularly useful option for efficiently countering physical threats such as Weavile and Mamoswine as well as setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados and Calm Mind Keldeo. Curse works similarly to Acid Armor, but trades a higher defense boost for the ability to break through opposing walls such as Chansey lacking Toxic thanks to the Attack boost.

Set Details
========

* Storm Drain is required for the Water-type immunity and it also boosts Gastrodon's Special Attack when hit by a Water-type move which allows Scald to hit harder.
* Maximum HP and Defense investment along with a Relaxed nature allows Gastrodon to be as bulky as possible and efficiently counter physical attackers, including threats such as Weavile. It also allows Gastrodon to counter Keldeo, as even with Choice Specs it cannot 2HKO Gastrodon with Secret Sword unless Stealth Rock is active.
* Leftovers provides valuable passive recovery and is the most useful item overall.
* A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 252 SpD along with a Sassy nature can be used to take on special attacking threats such as Kingdra, Hydreigon, and most notably any variant of Greninja without Grass Knot; however, it leaves Gastrodon unable to counter mixed or physical attackers such as Dragonite. Special attackers that carry moves that hit on the physical side such as Gardevoir and Keldeo can also bypass its weaker Defense.

Usage Tips
========

* Gastrodon functions as a reliable switch-in for Water-type attacks, but it should be cautious of lures such as Greninja with Grass Knot.
* Scald is spammable and can effectively cripple physical attackers that switch in on Gastrodon by burning them. Be careful of letting walls such as Slowbro switch into Gastrodon's Scald, however, as it may prefer to use Toxic on them instead.
* Gastrodon is easily worn down by Toxic so try to avoid opposing status users.
* As the team's Water-type counter, Gastrodon should usually be preserved as long as opposing Water-type threats remain in battle.
* Toxic + Recover can be very effective for stalling out foes lacking reliable recovery or the capability to heal status.
* Acid Armor can be used late-game to potentially wall any remaining physical attackers, so unless necessary, try not to set up unless Gastrodon's checks have been eliminated or weakened.
* Gastrodon has poor synergy with its teammates and drains momentum from the team so it should be used cautiously. Utilize Gastrodon's ability to switch into Water moves and pivot into a favorable matchup with double switches if threats such as Mega Charizard Y are still present on the opponent's team.

Team Options
========

* Hippowdon works well with Gastrodon in a defensive core, as it can effectively counter powerful physical attackers and phaze setup sweepers that beat Gastrodon such as Dragonite.
* Gliscor's neutrality to Grass and solid bulk let it form a defensive core with Gastrodon, who can take Water-type and Ice-type attacks for it. It also serves as a great status absorber thanks to Poison Heal and can easily stallbreak against many walls by Taunt or Swords Dance.
* Mamoswine is a great partner to Gastrodon as it is capable of checking Grass-type threats such as Breloom and can also take on threatening walls such as Chansey.
* Pokemon that provide Fire-type coverage such as Garchomp and Nidoking are necessary in order to check Ferrothorn.
* Offensive wallbreakers such as Landorus-I can be important for dealing with threats such as Mega Venusaur.
* Pokemon that check Azumarill and Crawdaunt such as Mega Garchomp are important to have as Gastrodon struggles against their powerful secondary STAB moves.
* Dugtrio is a decent option for trapping and checking Greninja and other threats such as Kyurem-B.
* Excadrill's Rapid Spin helps remove entry hazards for Gastrodon. With Toxic Spikes active in particular, Gastrodon is easily worn down and has a much harder time switching into foes

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Ground
--------
* Rindo Berry is an option to survive a Grass-type move once and can be used in tandem with Mirror Coat to lure threats such as Mega Charizard Y with Solar Beam, but the passive recovery from Leftovers is almost always superior.
* Clear Smog can be used to prevent Pokemon from setting up such as Swords Dance Gliscor or Dragon Dance Dragonite, but it has little use compared to other utility moves and Gastrodon struggles to find room for it.
* Ice Beam can be used to hit Grass- and Dragon-type Pokemon along with Gliscor, although without Special Attack investment it is very weak.
* Stockpile boosts both of Gastrodon's defenses but is inferior to Acid Armor's capability of countering set up sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

Ground
--------
**Grass-types**: Grass-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Mega Venusaur completely counter Gastrodon, although they do fear Scald burns on the switch in. Many offensive Grass-type threats can easily switch into and take advantage of Gastrodon such as Serperior or Tapu Bulu, although the latter also fears Scald burns.

**Lures / Coverage**: Many Pokemon carry Grass-type coverage moves that allow them to KO Gastrodon, such as Grass Knot Tapu Koko and Thundurus or Energy Ball Latios. Freeze-Dry on Pokemon such as Alolan Ninetales is also something to watch out for as it is a 4x super effective move.

**Stallbreakers**: Stallbreakers and Pokemon with taunt such as Mew can easily take advantage of Gastrodon and force it out, as Gastrodon is completely shut down. Mew's Sychronize ability also prevents Gastrodon from using Toxic since it will be affected by Toxic as well.

**Powerful Attackers**: Wallbreakers and other strong attackers such as Kyurem-B and Choice Specs Meloetta can easily tear through Gastrodon's subpar defenses.

**Walls / Status**: Gastrodon is easily countered by opposing walls such as Chansey and Celesteela due to its nonexistent offensive presence, and is shut down by Pokemon that aren't affected by status as well such as Pokemon with Natural Cure and Poison Heal Gliscor. Gastrodon is also crippled by status such as Toxic, which can wear it down very fast.

[OVERVIEW]

* Important role on Ground-type teams thanks to it's Water-type immunity with Storm Drain.
* Superb defensive typing including neutrality to Ice-type attacks.
* Effectively counters major threats to Ground-type teams such as Keldeo and Mega Metagross lacking Grass Knot. Maybe use a different example than keldeo, or at least change counter; Specs sword can 2hko with rocks and focus blast (fighting specific admittedly) just destroys it.
* Access to reliable recovery.
* Decent but not outstanding overall bulk.
* Gastrodon has a major Grass-type weakness which leaves it vulnerable to Grass-type Pokemon and foes with coverage.
* Weak offensive capability.
* Very low, useless speed stat.
* Poor momentum with teammates.
* Competes with Seismitoad as a Water-type counter, as Seismitoad has a superior movepool and is fast enough to check threats such as Azumarill and Crawdaunt. Superior offensive movepool; the lack of recovery really sets gastrodon apart.

Moves
========

* Scald is Gastrodon's primary Water-type STAB attack used to damage opponents and potentially burn them. It is also used in tandem with Storm Drain, which boosts Gastrodon's Special Attack. The second sentence here should probably go to Set Details.
* Earthquake is important Ground-type STAB that allows Gastrodon to target other Water-types such as? and Pokemon that resist scald like? also water types fall into this category as well.. It is used over Earth Power to guarantee breaking Substitutes from Calm Mind Keldeo.
* Recover allows Gastrodon to stay healthy and properly function as a wall. It is also necessary for wearing down opponents with Toxic or setting up with Acid Armor.
* Toxic is used to wear down opponents and opposing walls such as Slowbro.
* Acid Armor is a particularly useful option for efficiently countering physical threats such as Mamoswine, Weavile, and Mega Metagross along with set-up sweepers such as Dragon Dance Gyarados and Calm Mind Keldeo. I'm really not sold on ditching toxic, that's really crucial for Gastrodon.

Set Details
========

* Storm Drain is required for Water-type immunity. Put the boosting special attack here
* Maximum HP and Defense with a Relaxed nature allows Gastrodon to be as defensive as possible and efficiently counter physical attackers, including major threats such as Keldeo.
* Leftovers provides valuable passive recovery.
* Alternate specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 252 SpD with a Sassy nature can be used to take on special attacking threats such as Kingdra, Hydreigon, and most notably Greninja without Grass Knot, however it leaves Gastrodon unable to counter physical or mixed attackers and is still easily dealt with by Grass-type coverage or Psyshock users.

Usage Tips

* Gastrodon functions as a switch-in for Water-type attacks, but should be cautious of lures such as Greninja with Grass Knot.

* Mamoswine is a great partner with Gastrodon as it is capable of checking Grass-type threats such as Breloom, and can also take on threatening walls such as Chansey.
* Pokemon that provide Fire-type coverage such as Garchomp and Nidoking are necessary in order to check Ferrothorn.
* Offensive wallbreakers such as Landorus-I can be important for dealing with threats such as Mega Venusaur.
* Mention how something to take on Azumarill is handy (CB play rough 2hkoes)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Rindo Berry is an option to survive Grass-type hits and can potentially be used in tandem with Mirror Coat to lure threats such as Charizard-Y with Solar Beam, but the passive recovery from leftovers is almost always superior.
* Clear Smog can be used to prevent Pokemon from setting up such as Swords Dance Gliscor or Dragon Dance Dragonite, however it has little use compared to other utility moves and Gastrodon struggles to find room for it.
* Ice Beam can be used to hit Grass-type and Dragon-type Pokemon, along with Gliscor and flying types, but you might want to fish for scald burns on them. although without Special Attack investment it is very weak.
* Gastrodon can potentially run offensive sets such as Choice Specs as it actually has a decent Special Attack stat of 92. However, Gastrodon's movepool is subpar for offensive uses and not utilizing Gastrodon's capability as a wall is practically a waste of the Pokemon.
* Mention the disadvantages of curse; it's the main set in standard, so mentioning why it's less useful here is a good thing.
* Few viable options other than defensive sets.

Checks and Counters
===================
This section is really sparce and could use a lot more detail

**Grass-types**: Grass-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Mega Venusaur completely counter Gastrodon. This is really uninformative, ntm that ferro despises switching into scald and everything else hates toxic.

**Lures / Coverage**: Grass-type moves, Freeze-Dry From who? Why is this a threat?

**Powerful Attackers / Set-Up Sweepers**: Choice Band or Specs users such as? can easily tear through Gastrodon's defenses. Other threats such as Mega Pinsir can easily take advantage of Gastrodon by setting up Swords Dance, although as a physical attacker it has to be cautious of scald burnsDon't go this far inst specific examples. Also, Different bullets please

**Walls / Status**: Gastrodon is easily countered by opposing walls such as Chansey and Celesteela How? Celesteela rlly cant afford a furn, and steel teams fromably arent risking using celesteela vs gastrodon. due to it's weak offensive power. Gastrodon is also crippled by status such as toxic From pokemon like, which can wear it down very fast. These almost certainly need more

**Stallbreakers & Taunt**: Stallbreakers and Pokemon with taunt such as Gliscor or Mew can easily take advantage of Gastrodon and force it out. 0 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 244 HP / 200+ SpD Gliscor: 150-176 (42.6 - 50%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Poison Heal; yes, gliscor can take advantage, but it's not really crippling gastrodon because of that, it's beating it because of toxic and SD -- and taunt isn't that common anyway. maybe pick a different user.

While we are doing analyses in bulletpoints, we'd like for them to be in complete sentences. I'll take a look after that's fixed.

My bad didn't see this. Here you go!

Overview:
- The first line is why it can do the second line, so merge them.
* Its superb defensive typing, including neutrality to Ice-type attacks, improves Gastrodon's defensive capability.
* Major threats to Ground-type teams such as Keldeo and Mamoswine can be effectively countered by Gastrodon.
- These two lines work together to make Gastrodon very weak to Taunt users, and reliant on Scald burns for any offensive presence.
* Weak offensive capability.
* Gastrodon has a very low speed stat.

Set:
- I think Curse is a better move than Acid Armor, so I'm moving that here from OO. You only lose to SD users compared to AA, but I think improving Gastrodon's offensive presence is worth it. Most SD users you would only beat with AA assuming you were already in against them, as Gastrodon loses if it switches in on the SD.

[SET]
name: Defensive (Ground)
move 1: Scald
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Recover
move 4: Toxic / Curse
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

Moves:
- I'd remove the Storm Drain part of Scald.
- Change Acid Armor -> Curse

Set Details:
- Most notably, Gastrodon cannot switch into Keldeo safely anymore if it uses the specially defensive set. Need to mention Keldeo by name

Usage Tips:
- Scald line -> expand a bit more like "be careful of letting walls switch into Gastrodon's Scald, however, as it would prefer to use Toxic on them instead."
- Add some tips about using Curse. Things like when to use Curse, when not to, etc.
- Add something about being careful about momentum with Gastrodon and what not.

Team Ooptions:
- Remove the (don core) thing lol too casual
- Note that Hippowdon can also phaze sweepers that Gastrodon is vulnerable to such as <example>
- Add that Gliscor can serve as a great status absorber and can easily stallbreak against many walls with Gastrodon's help.
- I'd add that Dugtrio is actually a really decent teammate, which can trap and suicide KO Greninja and other threats like Kyurem-B.
- Excadrill's Rapid Spin helps remove entry hazards for Gastrodon. With entry hazards up, Gastrodon has a much harder time switching into foes and Toxic Spikes can completely cripple it.

Other Options:
- Switch Curse to Acid Armor here.
- I'd not even mention Choice Specs tbh. Too weak imo
- I'd add Stockpile for "setting up" against special attackers. It's obviously worse than Curse and Acid Armor, but it's an option.

Checks and Counters:
- Just make a small note highlighting walls that don't care about Toxic. Chansey, your example, can Toxic Gastrodon and then Natural Cure the retaliatory Toxic for free.
- I'd move Stallbreakers to right below Lures.

Very nice job both you and Quantum Tesseract. If you disagree with the Curse vs. Acid Armor thing, we can definitely talk about it. QC 1/3

Fixed overview, set details, usage tips, team options, other options, & checks and counters. I don't really agree with Curse over Acid Armor though, so I guess I'll talk to you about that.

Edit: Ready for QC 2/3.

* Gastrodon has a very low Speed stat along with a weak offensive capability making it very weak to Taunt users example?, and reliant on Scald burns for any offensive presence.
* Gastrodon has poor momentum with teammates due its stall-like uses. this is worded awkwardly. I think what you're trying to say is it drains momentum. The sentence is just a bit confusing
* It competes with Seismitoad as a Water-type counter, as Seismitoad has a superior offensive movepool and is fast enough to check threats such as Azumarill and Crawdaunt.

Moves
========

* Scald is Gastrodon's primary Water-type STAB attack used to damage opponents and potentially burn them. I feel like used to damage opponents part is unnecessary
* Earthquake is important Ground-type STAB that allows Gastrodon to target other Water-types and other Pokemon that resist Scald examples.
Fluff because only a wall is mentioned and Toxic doesn't have other uses besides wearing down walls. I would also add Zapdos as another example just to Toxic since that's a very important thing that toxic hits
* Acid Armor is a particularly useful option for efficiently countering physical threats such as Weavile and Mamoswine along with set-up sweepers such as Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados and Calm Mind Keldeo. Curse works similarly to Acid Armor, but comes at the cost of losing higher defense boosts to allow Gastrodon to break walls that can counter it such as Slowbro, Chansey, or Porygon2 lacking Toxic. Mega Gyara is a slightly bigger threat to ground than regular gyara is

Set Details
========

* Storm Drain is required for Water-type immunity. It also boosts Gastrodon's Special Attack which allows Scald to hit harder.
* Maximum HP and Defense with a Relaxed nature allows Gastrodon to be as defensive as possible and efficiently counter physical attackers, including major threats such as Keldeo. I would add an example of a physical attacker spread helps with and another sentence about Keldeo, since that's the main reason to use the spread
* Leftovers provides valuable passive recovery.
* A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 252 SpD with a Sassy nature can be used to take on special attacking threats such as Kingdra, Hydreigon, and most notably Greninja without Grass Knot, however it leaves Gastrodon unable to counter physical or mixed attackers such as Keldeo (Keldeo is a special attacker with psuedo attacking coverage this wording may confuse the reader into thinking physical or mixed Keldeo is viable). It is also still easily dealt with by Grass-type coverage isn't that the same with physically defensive spread? or Psyshock users.

Usage Tips
========

* Gastrodon functions as a switch-in for Water-type attacks, but should be cautious of lures such as Greninja with Grass Knot.
* Scald is spammable can effectively cripple physical attackers that switch in on Gastrodon by burning them. Be careful of letting walls switch into Gastrodon's Scald, however, as it may prefer to use Toxic on them instead. Give Examples of walls that poisoning them would be better than burning?
* Gastrodon is easily worn down by Toxic and should avoid opposing status users.
* As the team's Water-type counter, Gastrodon should usually be preserved as long opposing Water-type threats remain in battle.
* Toxic + Recover and be very effective for stalling out strong foes. might want to check this sentence
* Acid Armor can be used late game to potentially wall all remaining physical attackers, so unless necessary, it is usually better to not try setting up too soon if the opponent still has threats that can check it. what kind of threats threaten Acid Armor Gastro is it Grass-type coverage? Powerful Special Setup Sweepers? provide examples as well
* Gastrodon has poor momentum I don't think momentum is right word here, maybe synergy? with its teammates so it should be swapped into and out cautiously. This also makes it important to swap out to wall breakers predicting the opponents Gastrodon checks such as Mega Charizard Y to come in.

Team Options
========

* Hippowdon works well with Gastrodon in a defensive core, as it can effectively counter powerful attackers along with phazing sweepers that beat Gastrodon such as Dragonite.
* Gliscor's neutrality to grass and solid bulk let it form a defensive core with Gastrodon, who can counter Water-type and Ice-type attacks for it. It also serves as a great status absorber and can easily stallbreak against many walls with Gastrodon's help. What set does stallbreaker Gliscor exactly run (what makes it a "stallbreaker") taunt? SD?
* Mamoswine is a great partner with Gastrodon as it is capable of checking Grass-type threats such as Breloom, and can also take on threatening walls such as Chansey.
* Pokemon that provide Fire-type coverage such as Garchomp and Nidoking are necessary in order to check Ferrothorn.
* Offensive wallbreakers such as Landorus-I can be important for dealing with threats such as Mega Venusaur. I think Mega Venusaur is a good example but it only applies with Lando-I is running Psychic so another example that isn't reliant on Lando-I having Psychic would be great
* Pokemon that check Azumarill and Crawdaunt such as Mega Garchomp are important to have as Gastrodon struggles to counter them.
* Dugtrio is a decent option which can be useful for trapping and checking Greninja and other threats such as Kyurem-B.
* Excadrill's Rapid Spin helps remove entry hazards for Gastrodon. With entry hazards up, Gastrodon has a much harder time switching into foes and Toxic Spikes can completely cripple it.

Other Options

Ground
--------
* Rindo Berry is an option to survive Grass-type hits and can be used in tandem with Mirror Coat to lure threats such as Charizard-Y with Solar Beam, but the passive recovery from leftovers is almost always superior.
* Clear Smog can be used to prevent Pokemon from setting up such as Swords Dance Gliscor or Dragon Dance Dragonite, however it has little use compared to other utility moves and Gastrodon struggles to find room for it.

* Stockpile boosts both of Gastrodon's defenses but is inferior to Acid Armor's capability of countering set-up sweepers.
* Few viable options other than defensive sets are available as Gastrodon's movepool is subpar for offensive uses and not utilizing Gastrodon's capability as a wall is practically a waste of the Pokemon.This is sort of implied with no mention of an offensive set because it's not good at, shouldn't be considered because Seis is just so much better its faster, and has a better movepull.

Checks and Counters
===================

Ground
--------
**Grass-types**: Grass-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Mega Venusaur completely counter Gastrodon, although they do fear Scald burns on the switch-in. Add some offensive Grass types because every offensive Grass type can switch into Gastro. Serp can get a Boost from Leaf Storm, Tapu Bulu can boost or recover HP, but fears Scald burn

**Lures / Coverage**: Many Pokemon carry Grass-type coverage moves that allow them to KO Gastrodon, such as Grass Knot Tapu Koko or Energy Ball Latios. Freeze-Dry on Pokemon such as Alolan Ninetales is also something to watch out for as it is 4x super effective.

**Stallbreakers & Taunt**: Stallbreakers and Pokemon with taunt such as Mew can easily take advantage of Gastrodon and force it out, as Gastrodon is completely shut down by them.

**Powerful Attackers**: Wallbreakers and other strong attackers such as Kyurem-B and Choice Specs Meloetta can easily tear through Gastrodon's subpar defenses.

**Walls / Status**: Gastrodon is easily countered by opposing walls such as Chansey and Celesteela due to it's weak offensive power, and is shut down by walls that aren't affected by status as well such as Chansey with Natural Cure and Toxic Poison Heal Gliscor. Gastrodon is also crippled by status such as toxic, which can wear it down very fast.

Moves

* Earthquake is important Ground-type STAB that allows Gastrodon to target other Water-types and other Pokemon that resist Scald such as Tentacruel. It is used over Earth Power to guarantee breaking Substitutes from Calm Mind Keldeo.
- Tentacruel is a Water-type though lol
Acid Armor is a particularly useful option for efficiently countering physical threats such as Weavile and Mamoswine along with set-up sweepers such as Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados and Calm Mind Keldeo. Curse works similarly to Acid Armor, but comes at the cost of losing higher defense boosts to allow Gastrodon to break walls that can counter it such as Slowbro, Chansey, or Porygon2 lacking Toxic.
- Slowbro and Porygon2 lose to to Toxic anyway.

Checks and Counters

**Stallbreakers & Taunt**: Stallbreakers and Pokemon with taunt such as Mew can easily take advantage of Gastrodon and force it out, as Gastrodon is completely shut down by them.
- Stallbreakers include Taunt users, so just make it 'Stallbreakers' instead of 'Stallbreakers & Taunt'.

Really not much to add, great job QC 3/3

Ground
========

* Gastrodon plays has an important role on Ground-type teams because of thanks to its Water-type immunity thanks to its ability with Storm Drain.

* It has decent but not outstanding overall bulk which leaves Gastrodon vulnerable to wallbreakers stronger attackers and setup sweepers.
* Gastrodon has a major Grass-type weakness which leaves it vulnerable to Grass-type Pokemon and foes with said coverage.
* Gastrodon has a very low Speed stat along with a weak offensive presence capability making it very susceptible weak to Taunt users such as Mew, and reliant on Scald burns for any offensive presence (unnecessary).
* Gastrodon drains momentum from more offensively oriented the teams due to its lackluster offensive presence stall-like uses.
* It competes with Seismitoad as a Water-type counter, as Seismitoad has a superior offensive movepool and is fast enough to check threats such as Azumarill and Crawdaunt.

Moves
========

* Scald is Gastrodon's primary Water-type STAB attack and can potentially burn them foe.
* Earthquake is an important Ground-type STAB move that allows Gastrodon to target other Water-types and other Pokemon that resist Scald such as Dragalge. It is used over Earth Power to guarantee breaking through Keldeo's Substitutes from Calm Mind Keldeo.
* Recover allows Gastrodon to stay healthy and properly function as a wall. It is also necessary for stalling out wearing down opponents with Toxic or setting up with Acid Armor.
* Toxic is used to wear down opposing walls that are not immune to Poison such as Slowbro and Zapdos.
* Acid Armor is a particularly useful option for efficiently countering physical threats such as Weavile and Mamoswine as well as along with setup (RH) sweepers such as Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados and Calm Mind Keldeo. Curse works similarly to Acid Armor, but trades a higher defense boost for the ability comes at the cost of losing higher defense boosts to allow Gastrodon to break through opposing walls that can counter it such as Chansey lacking Toxic thanks to the Attack boost.

Set Details
========

* Storm Drain is required for the Water-type immunity and. (remove full stop) It also boosts Gastrodon's Special Attack when hit by a Water-type move which allows Scald to hit harder.
* Maximum HP and Defense investment along with a Relaxed nature allows Gastrodon to be as bulky defensive as possible and efficiently counter physical attackers, including threats such as Weavile. It also allows Gastrodon to counter Keldeo, as even with Choice Specs it cannot 2HKO Gastrodon with Secret Sword unless prior to Stealth Rock is active.
* Leftovers provides valuable passive recovery and is the most useful item overall.
* A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 252 SpD along with a Sassy nature can be used to take on special attacking threats such as Kingdra, Hydreigon, and most notably any variant of Greninja without Grass Knot; however, it leaves Gastrodon unable to counter physical or mixed attackers such as Keldeo (Keldeo isn't really a physical or mixed attacker per se, it just has a special move that hits on the physical side, so I would suggest putting something else here) with Secret Sword (Keldeo always runs Secret Sword so no need to mention it here). Special attackers that carry moves that hit on the physical side such as Tapu Lele and Keldeo can also bypass its weaker Defense It is also easily dealt with by Psyshock users.

Usage Tips
========

* Gastrodon is easily worn down by Toxic so try to and should avoid opposing status users.
* As the team's Water-type counter, Gastrodon should usually be preserved as long as opposing Water-type threats remain in battle.
* Toxic + Recover can be very effective for stalling out strong foes lacking reliable recovery or the capability to heal status.
* Acid Armor can be used late-game to potentially wall any all remaining physical attackers, so try not to set up unless Gastrodon's checks have been eliminated or weakened unless necessary, it is usually better to not try setting up too soon if the opponent still has threats that can check it. Pokemon with Grass-type coverage such as Thundurus with Grass Knot, and powerful special attackers such as Choice Specs Hydreigon can easily check Gastrodon. (This sentence belongs in the Checks and Counters section)
* Gastrodon has poor synergy with its teammates and drains momentum from the team so it should be used swapped into and out cautiously. Utilize Gastrodon's ability to switch into Water moves and pivot into a favorable matchup with double switches if threats such as Mega Charizard Y are still present on the opponent's team. This also makes it important to swap out to wall breakers predicting the opponents Gastrodon checks such as Mega Charizard Y to come in.

Team Options
========

* Hippowdon works well with Gastrodon in a defensive core, as it can effectively counter powerful physical attackers and along with phaze setup sweepers that beat Gastrodon such as Dragonite.
* Gliscor's neutrality to Grass and solid bulk let it form a defensive core with Gastrodon, who can take counter Water-type and Ice-type attacks for it. It also serves as a great status absorber thanks to Poison Heal and can easily stallbreak against many walls by using Taunt or Swords Dance.
* Mamoswine is a great partner to with Gastrodon as it is capable of checking Grass-type threats such as Breloom, (RC) and can also take on threatening walls such as Chansey.
* Pokemon that provide Fire-type coverage such as Garchomp and Nidoking are necessary in order to check Ferrothorn.
* Offensive wallbreakers such as Landorus-I can be important for dealing with threats such as Mega Venusaur.
* Pokemon that check Azumarill and Crawdaunt such as Mega Garchomp are important to have as Gastrodon struggles to counter them against their powerful secondary STAB moves.
* Dugtrio is a decent option which can be useful for trapping and checking Greninja and other threats such as Kyurem-B.
* Excadrill's Rapid Spin helps remove entry hazards for Gastrodon. With Toxic Spikes active in particular entry hazards up, Gastrodon is easily worn down and has a much harder time switching into foes and Toxic Spikes can completely cripple it.

Other Options

Ground
--------
* Rindo Berry is an option to survive a Grass-type move once hits and can be used in tandem with Mirror Coat to lure threats such as Mega Charizard Y with Solar Beam, but the passive recovery from Leftovers is almost always superior.
* Clear Smog can be used to prevent Pokemon from setting up such as Swords Dance Gliscor or Dragon Dance Dragonite, but however it has little use compared to other utility moves and Gastrodon struggles to find room for it.
* Ice Beam can be used to hit Grass-type and Dragon-type Pokemon, (RC) along with Gliscor, although without Special Attack investment it is very weak.
* Stockpile boosts both of Gastrodon's defenses but is inferior to Acid Armor's capability of countering setup sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

Ground
--------
**Grass-types**: Grass-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Mega Venusaur completely counter Gastrodon, although they do fear Scald burns on the switch in. Many offensive Grass-type threats can easily switch into and take advantage of Gastrodon such as Serperior or Tapu Bulu, although the latter it also fears Scald burns.

**Lures / Super Effective Coverage**: Many Pokemon carry Grass-type coverage moves that allow them to KO Gastrodon, such as Grass Knot Tapu Koko and Thundurus or Energy Ball Latios. Freeze-Dry on Pokemon such as Alolan Ninetales is also something to watch out for as it is a 4x super effective move.

**Stallbreakers**: Stallbreakers and Pokemon with Taunt such as Mew can easily take advantage of Gastrodon and force it out, as Gastrodon is completely shut down by them. Mew's Sychronize ability also prevents Gastrodon from using Toxic since it will be affected by Toxic as well.

**Powerful Attackers**: Wallbreakers and other strong attackers such as Kyurem-B and Choice Specs Meloetta and Hydreigon can easily tear through Gastrodon's subpar defenses.

**Walls / Status**: Gastrodon is easily countered by opposing walls such as Chansey and Celesteela due to its nonexistent weak offensive presence power, and is shut down by Pokemon walls that aren't affected by status as well such as Pokemon with Chansey with Natural Cure and Poison Heal Gliscor. Gastrodon is also crippled by status such as Toxic, which can wear it down very fast.
