[OVERVIEW]

Gastrodon is a very useful defensive wall with its Water / Ground typing, very reliable recovery in Recover, and ability to easily come in on Water-type attacks thanks to Storm Drain, letting it take on many NU threats such as Slowking, Magmortar, and Heliolisk. However, it is incredibly vulnerable to Toxic, which quickly wears it down, and due to its 4x weakness to Grass, it is easily taken out by coverage moves. This weakness is easily exploited by many of NU's special attackers, including Delphox, Comfey, and Slowking, while Grass-types such as Dhelmise and Sceptile easily come in against it and KO it. Furthermore, only decent defensive stats mean that it can be taken out by Z-Moves such as Incineroar's boosted Malicious Moonsault. Gastrodon also generally brings less utility to a team than competitors such as Seismitoad, Blastoise, and Vaporeon, which bring Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, and Heal Bell support to a team, respectively.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Earthquake gives Gastrodon a very reliable source of damage, allowing it to OHKO Heliolisk while 2HKOing defensive Delphox. Toxic is Gastrodon's best source of damage against Water-types such as Vaporeon and Slowbro while also wearing down Pokemon such as Dhelmise. Recover gives Gastrodon a very reliable source of recovery, letting it easily take on Magmortar without Hidden Power Grass, Heliolisk, and Rotom. Scald is a reliable Water-type STAB move, hitting Pokemon such as Steelix and Rhydon harder than any of Gastrodon's other moves while providing a useful chance to burn; however, this burn chance can make dealing with Slowking significantly harder. Ice Beam is Gastrodon's best move to use against Grass-types such as Alolan Exeggutor and Sceptile, OHKOing the former after Stealth Rock while 2HKOing the latter, making it significantly harder for either to switch into Gastrodon.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Defense and HP investment with a Sassy nature means that Gastrodon easily takes Heliolisk's Hyper Voice after Stealth Rock and makes dealing with special wallbreakers significantly easier. Leftovers provides continual recovery for Gastrodon. Storm Drain means that Gastrodon can easily switch into Water-type attacks such as Vaporeon's Scald and gives it a Special Attack boost in the process.

Usage Tips
========

Given Gastrodon's severe weakness to Toxic, it should often immediately switch out against any opposing Toxic user, including defensive Slowking and Blastoise, and should only try to use Toxic on these threats on the switch. It is often helpful to try to scout for Grass-type moves; blindly leaving Gastrodon in against a Magmortar can easily lead to a KOed Gastrodon. Generally, try to keep Gastrodon's HP as high as possible, as it is otherwise easily put into range of attacks such as Heliolisk's Hyper Voice, and use Earthquake or Toxic if healing is not necessary. Gastrodon should be used to block Volt Switch as much as possible, fearing little from common Volt Switch users such as Heliolisk and Rotom. Use Ice Beam when a Grass-type is predicted to switch in, as it allows Gastrodon to potentially OHKO Alolan Exeggutor and heavily damage other Grass-types.

Team Options
========

Thanks to Gastrodon's ability to check several dangerous Pokemon such as Magmortar and Heliolisk, it can fit excellently on balanced teams. Given Gastrodon's extreme weakness to Toxic, Heal Bell and Aromatherapy users such as Mega Audino are excellent teammates. Grass-resistant teammates are a must given how often and easily Gastrodon invites in Grass-types, making teammates such as Braviary, Incineroar, and Golbat good partners. Gastrodon appreciates entry hazard control from Xatu, Silvally-Steel, and Decidueye to remove the Spikes and Toxic Spikes that trouble it. Physically defensive Pokemon such as Regirock and Weezing can make good partners for Gastrodon, with Regirock checking Pokemon such as Braviary and Incineroar that Gastrodon can struggle with while uninvested.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

An offensive set consisting of Scald / Earth Power / Ice Beam / Sludge Wave can be run with Choice Specs and maximum Special Attack investment in order to take advantage of Gastrodon's good coverage and Storm Drain's Special Attack boost, but it finds itself easily worn down and outclassed by other options, especially Seismitoad, which offers far better Speed and Stealth Rock. Clear Smog can be run over Scald or Toxic to prevent opposing Pokemon from setting up on Gastrodon, but it fails to pierce Substitute and takes away valuable moveslots, making its usage hard to justify. Block can be used in a moveset of Block / Rest / Toxic / Scald to trap and KO walls such as Blastoise, Vaporeon, and Slowking, but because the set needs Rest to avoid damage from Toxic itself, it ends up being less generally applicable than standard sets. This set is additionally often done better by Pyukumuku and Slowking, which offer more utility to a team.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-type Attacks**: Grass-types such as Sceptile, Dhelmise, and Decidueye all take minimal damage from Gastrodon's Earthquake or Scald and easily force it out with STAB Grass-type attacks. However, Ice Beam can punish Alolan Exeggutor and Sceptile, while Dhelmise and Decidueye dislike Toxic. Grass-type coverage such as Hidden Power Grass from Magmortar and Energy Ball from Sigilyph can also heavily damage Gastrodon.

**Toxic**: Toxic from Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Blastoise, and Druddigon heavily limits the time Gastrodon can spend in play and easily wears it down, resulting in it being 2HKOed by attacks such as Heliolisk's Hyper Voice if it is whittled down too much.

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers that do not fear Toxic such as Substitute + Bulk Up Braviary and Bulk Up Scrafty can use Gastrodon as setup fodder, and many other sweepers such as Comfey and Nasty Plot Decidueye can use the threat of super effective coverage to easily set up against Gastrodon.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Gastrodon's Defense stat leaves it vulnerable to wallbreakers such as Mega Glalie, Pangoro, Swords Dance Samurott, and Swords Dance Incineroar, which threaten to heavily damage it.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Gastrodon is a very useful defensive wall, with Water/Ground- typing, very reliable recovery in Recover, and the ability to easily come in on Water-type attacks for free thanks to Storm Drain, letting it take on many NU threats such as Slowbro, Magmortar, and Heliolisk.
  • However, it is incredibly vulnerable to enemy status, being quickly worn down by Toxic, and thanks to its 4x Grass-weakness, it is easily taken out by coverage moves, for example Slowbro's Grass Knot. Furthermore, good, but not great defensive stats mean that it can be taken out by Z-moves such as an Incineroar's Malicious Moonsault after a Swords Dance. I mean, I wouldn't say it's vulnerable to status given it only really fears Toxic. You're probably better off just saying it's vulnerable to Toxic.
  • Additionally, unlike most of its competitors, Gastrodon brings no utility to a team, while other options such as Seismitoad and Vaporeon bring Stealth Rock and Heal Bell support for a team.
  • As a result, Gastrodon fits best on balanced teams, where it can use its good bulk and reliable recovery to wall pokemon such as Magmortar and Heliolisk, which balanced teams can often struggle with. This sounds like a team options tip more than an Overview detail

Moves

  • Earthquake gives Gastrodon a very reliable source of damage, allowing it to OHKO Heliolisk while 2HKOing defensive Delphox and Calm Mind Diancie.
  • Toxic is Gastrodon's best source of damage against enemy Water-types such as Vaporeon and Slowbro, while also wearing down pokemon such as Cryogonal for it.
  • Recover gives Gastrodon a very reliable source of recovery. (maybe delete this) I mean considering we use baby rules for our analyses, something about Recover is good. Just talk about how it lets Gastrodon consistently check stuff like Magmortar and Rotom.
  • Scald is a reliable Water-type STAB move, hitting pokemon such as Steelix and Rhydon harder than any of Gastrodon's other moves, while providing a useful chance to burn, however this burn chance can make dealing with Slowbro significantly harder.
  • Ice Beam is Gastrodon's best move to use against Grass-types such as Alolan Exeggutor and Sceptile, OHKOing the former after Stealth Rocks while 2HKOing the latter. I'd focus more on how it prevents these two from safely switching in on Gastrodon. Right now this sentence sort of sounds like you're trying to 1v1 them.

Set Details
========

  • Maximum Special Defense and HP investment with a Sassy nature means that Gastrodon always lives a Heliolisk's Hyper Voice after Stealth Rock, and makes dealing with Special wallbreakers significantly easier. say that it avoids the 2HKO after Stealth Rock. Right now this reads more like you're barely surviving it lol.
  • Leftovers provides a very reliable source of recovery for Gastrodon.
  • Storm Drain means that Gastrodon can easily switch into Water-type attacks aimed at it, and gives it a special attack boost in the process. give some examples of Pokemon you can better check as a result of Storm Drain
  • (Someone give me an alt spread) this is the only one I've used

Usage Tips
========

  • Given Gastrodon's severe weakness to Toxic, only let it take a Toxic if there is no other chance, that is, if the opposing Pokemon needs to be Toxiced, or if the opponent needs to be KO'd.
  • It is often helpful to try to scout for Grass-type moves, blindly leaving Gastrodon in against a Magmortar can easily lead to a KO'd Gastrodon.
  • Generally try to keep Gastrodon's HP as high as possible, as it is otherwise easily chipped by attacks such as Heliolisk's Hyper Voice, and use utility moves such as Earthquake or Toxic if healing is not necessary.
  • Gastrodon should be used to block Volt Switch as much as possible, fearing little from common Volt Switch users such as Heliolisk and Rotom.
  • ice beam when predicting something like neckboy to come in

Team Options
========

  • something about it fitting on balance teams best like you did in the Overview (ideally you just move that point down to here)
  • Given Gastrodon's extreme weakness to Toxic, friendly Heal Bell users such as Diancie and Mega-Audino are excellent teammates, with Diancie being an especially good teammate, as Gastrodon takes on Water- and Ground-types for it.
  • Grass resistant teammates are a must given how often and easily Gastrodon invites in Grass-types, making teammates such as Braviary, Incineroar, and Golbat good partners.
  • Friendly Freeze Dry resistant pokemon such as Cryogonal, Silvally-Steel, and Sneasel are good partners, being able to take on enemy Vanilluxe reliably for Gastrodon, while Cryogonal can spin away Toxic Spikes for it.
  • Gastrodon appreciates hazard control from Xatu, Silvally-Steel, and Decidueye to remove the Spikes and Toxic Spikes that trouble it.
  • something about physically defensive Pokemon pairing well alongside Gastrodon to make up for its lacking physical defense when uninvested

  • Curse can be run over Scald or Toxic in order to give Gastrodon the ability to boost up its Defense and Attack, however it is still very easy to force out with Grass-type attacks, making its usage hard to justify. eeehhh I don't jive with this
  • block + memento is funny and could maybe get a mention here. idk if thats a set we really wanna preach to new players though lol

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass Types**: Grass types such as Sceptile, Dhelmise and Decidueye all take minimal damage from Gastrodon's Earthquake or Scald, and easily force it out with STAB Grass attacks. Vileplume also takes very little from anything Gastrodon can do, and is also immune to Toxic, letting it easily come in on, and force Gastrodon out. some of the frailer ones fear Ice Beam, while Dhelmise and Decidueye don't like being crippled by Toxic

**Freeze Dry Users**: Freeze Dry users such as Vanilluxe and Mega-Glalie boast the ability to easily KO Gastrodon thanks to a strong 4x Super Effective attack. Cryogonal is worth a special mention, being immune to Earthquake, and taking little from Ice Beam or Scald while also threatening Gastrodon with Freeze Dry.

**Toxic**: Toxic heavily limits the time Gastrodon can spend in play, and easily wears it down, resulting in it being 2HKO'd by attacks such as Heliolisk's Hyper Voice if it is whittled down too much. also forces it to give up turns recovering health, which can let stuff like say, Sceptile in for free

**Grass Type Coverage**: Attacks such as Hidden Power Grass from Magmortar or Energy Ball from Sigilyph easily wear down or KO Gastrodon. this section is not worth being here on its own imo. generalize the first section to "grass-type attacks" or "grass-types and grass-type attacks" or whatever.

physical wallbreakers like sd incin, bu fly/fight z brav, etc could get a mention here too.

potentially setup sweepers too like blockbro, viv, sub bu brav. they all take advantage of gastrodon's passivity (or in viv's case just sleeps it and does sub shenanigans or eballs it down)

There are still mentions of Slowbro and Diancie throughout the analysis.

Overview:
- Gastro's 4x Grass weakness is a bigger deal than it lets on, since it's rather easily exploitable by most of the tier's special attackers, such as Delphox, Magmortar, Comfey, Vikavolt, Samurott, and even Heliolisk on ocassion, which makes it a less capable blanket check to special attackers. Uninvested Grass attacks from Vileplume or Decidueye also majorly threaten Gastro, whereas Slowking and Vaporeon can better shrug off such hits. (you can add/transfer some of these mentions into C&C to your choosing).
- You could perhaps add Blastoise's Rapid Spin utility, and Slowking's access to Regenerator lessening the need to heal while also allowing for more offensive spreads. Quagsire and Pyukumuku also fit better on purely defensive builds with their Unaware ability.

Usage Tips:
Given Gastrodon's severe weakness to Toxic, only let it take a Toxic if there is no other chance, that is, if the opposing Pokemon needs to be Toxiced, or if the opponent needs to be KO'd.
This sentence is phrased pretty weirdly as is, but I'd argue that Gastrodon doesn't even really want to trade Toxics if it can help it, since most of its Toxic targets (as well as mons that would try to Toxic Gastro) are either immune to Toxic, can cure itself, or are less crippled by Toxic than Gastro is. I'd say that it's generally better for Gastro to try and Toxic those mons on the switch-in instead, which puts Gastro at less risk.

OO:
- Note that offensive sets face major competition from Seismitoad, which has a much better Speed tier and more powerful STAB in Hydro Pump.
- Block is also generally outperformed by Nasty Plot Slowking and Rest + Spite Pyukumuku.

C&C:
- "Grass-types and Grass-type coverage" is probably better paraphrased as "Grass-type attacks", with greater emphasis on Grass-type Pokemon when going into detail.
- Mega Glalie straight up does more damage to Gastrodon with Double-Edge than with uninvested Freeze-Dry, so I don't believe this is even worth mentioning. Of course this section would need to be reworked to either include other Freeze-Dry users such as Articuno and Aurorus, or probably just scrap the section outright since all of the Freeze-Dry users are not particularly relevant enough to note.
- Can you at least name some relevant Toxic users to watch out for?
- I imagine Gastrodon has more to fear from Energy Ball Vivillon than Subsitute variants if anything, so maybe mention Taunt Mismagius instead. Also replace Slowbro with Scrafty.
- Physical wallbreakers could use a bit mentions, such as Pangoro and Mega Glalie which threaten immediate damage or Buginium Z Samurott which breaks Gastrodon in the same way Incineroar does.

"Gastrodon brings no utility to a team, while other options such as Seismitoad, Blastoise, and Vaporeon bring Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, and Heal Bell support respectively to a team."
this is pretty false and contradicts earlier statements of it providing a Water (and Electric fwiw) immunity. I would just remove this sentence because it's just that these other options provide different forms of utility

Maximum Special Defense and HP investment with a Sassy nature means that Gastrodon easily takes Heliolisk's Hyper Voice after Stealth Rock,(RC) and makes dealing with special wallbreakers significantly easier. Leftovers provides a very reliable source of continual (it's not really reliable; Recover and Roost are "reliable") recovery for Gastrodon. However, Ice Beam can punish Alolan Exeggutor and Sceptile, while Dhelmise and Decidueye dislike Toxic. Grass-(AH)type(remove AH comment) coverage such as Hidden Power Grass from Magmortar and Energy Ball from Sigilyph can also heavily damage Gastrodon.

**Toxic**: Toxic
from Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Blastoise, and Druddigon heavily limits the time Gastrodon can spend in play and easily wears it down, resulting in it being 2HKOed by attacks such as Heliolisk's Hyper Voice if it is whittled down too much. Some examples of common Toxic users include Vaporeon, Blastoise, and Druddigon.

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers that do not fear Toxic such as Substitute + Bulk Up Braviary and Bulk Up Scrafty can use Gastrodon as setup fodder, and many other sweepers such as Comfey and Swords Dance Decidueye can use the threat of super effective coverage to easily set up against Gastrodon.(Swords Dance Decidueye is incredibly dead, maybe find a different example)

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Gastrodon's Defense stat leaves it vulnerable to wallbreakers such as Swords Dance Incineroar and Mega Glalie,(AC) Pangoro, Swords Dance Samurott, and Swords Dance Incineroar, which threaten to heavily damage it,(RC) and other examples include Pangoro and Sword Dance Samurott.
