Monotype Heatran (Fire) [ORAS]

[OVERVIEW]

Fire
========

Heatran's neutrality to Rock and resistance to Psychic and Dragons thanks to its part-Steel typing allows it to better take on Pokemon like Aerodactyl, Latios, and Dragonite. With Magma Storm + Taunt, Heatran can trap and stallbreak bulky Pokemon such as Porygon2, Latios, and Chansey. Taunt also allows Heatran to deter slower Stealth Rock setters like Clefable and Cradily, which is essential for Fire teams. While Heatran's Speed lets it outpace slower threats such as Adamant variants of Excadrill, Diggersby, and Dragonite, it leaves it vulnerable to faster threats such as Nidoking, Manaphy, and Kyurem-B.

[SET COMMENTS]
Magma Storm traps walls like Chansey and Porygon2 and wears them down. Earth Power rounds out Heatran's coverage and deals more damage to Rock-types like Mega Diancie and Rhyperior as well as opposing Heatran. Hidden Power Ice targets Dragon- and Ground-types such as Dragonite and Garchomp. Air Balloon gives Heatran the ability to evade Ground-type attacks until it's broken, letting it switch in more early-game.

Heatran's teammates appreciate its ability to switch into Ground-type attacks early-game and help beat walls they generally struggle with, such as Chansey and Porygon2, by trapping them. Heatran trapping Chansey makes it easier for special attackers to fulfill their roles, and while physical attackers like Victini and Darmanitan need sun to 2HKO Porygon2, they appreciate Heatran trapping and weakening it. Mega Charizard Y provides sun support, acts as entry hazard removal, and threatens bulky Water-types(give some examples) with Solar Beam. Choice Scarf users such as Victini and Darmanitan take care of faster threats such as Hawlucha, Mega Gallade, and Heracross, as well as provide U-turn support. Volcarona appreciates Heatran's ability to weaken walls it otherwise can't handle, letting it set up and sweep late-game more easily. Infernape pairs well as the lead Stealth Rock setter for Fire teams, which helps provide chip damage to make it easier for Heatran to wear down its threats, while also sporting a good Speed tier and STAB Fighting-type coverage. Torkoal can also be used as a Stealth Rock user and entry hazard removal that generally fits better on more balanced teams. Volcanion can switch into Water-type attacks and threaten certain Water-, Ground-, and Fire-types Heatran otherwise would have trouble with, such as Azumarill, Gastrodon, and Volcarona.

Fire
--------

Flash Cannon can be run over Hidden Power Ice to OHKO Mega Diancie and deal more damage to Rock-types like Terrakion and Tyranitar, but Heatran misses out on important coverage for Dragon- and Ground-types, so it generally isn't worth it. Stealth Rock can be run as well, either alongside Torkoal or Infernape, giving teams a secondary option for hazards. Toxic can also be used to put bulkier walls and sweepers such as Latios and Volcarona on a timer, but Heatran loses valuable coverage doing so. Choice Scarf can also be run with Fire Blast / Earth Power / Flash Cannon / Hidden Power Ice, providing a lure for Mega Diancie, but it faces competition from better Choice Scarf users such as Victini and Darmanitan.

**Bulky Water-types**: Heatran struggles to break through bulky Water-types such as Gastrodon, Suicune, Swampert, and Rotom-W, the latter of which can pivot out of Magma Storm damage.

**Super Effective Coverage**: Heatran needs to be wary of various Pokemon that run super effective coverage, such as Dragonite, Hydreigon, Gengar, and Mega Gardevoir

**Faster Threats**: Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny, Terrakion, and Landorus all outspeed Heatran and immediately force it out with the threat of a KO.

[OVERVIEW]

Fire
========

Heatran's unique typing gives Fire both a neutral to rock types, as well as a pseudo immunity to ground paired with an Air Balloon. Paired with Magma Storm + Taunt, Heatran gives the ability to stall break vs bulkier threats Fire would otherwise struggles with. Taunt also gives Heatran the utility of being able to prevent hazards, which is essential for Fire. Due to it's typing, Heatran only takes 12.5% from Stealth Rocks, giving it more opportunities to switch back in. While Heatran's speed lets it out pace bulkier threats, it leaves it vulnerable to faster threats that force Heatran out before it can do it's role. Move the details about Heatran's Speed tier from set comments to the overview. I also feel that you can talk a bit more about how Heatran's part-Steel typing grants it some useful resistances (Dragon and Psychic in particular).

Magma Storm is Heatran's strongest STAB move and provides the utility to trap walls and wear them down. Earth Power hits other threats that resist Magma Storm, such as rock types Rock-types and opposing Heatran's Heatran. HP Ice Hidden Power Ice gives Heatran the ability to damage threats it otherwise struggles with, such as Garchomp and Dragonite. Taunt pairs with Magma Storm to trap and wear down walls, effectively shutting them down, as well as another option to prevent hazards. Timid max Spe and max SpA lets Heatran hit as hard as possible while still out speeding key threats such adamant variants of Excadrill, Diggersby, and Dragonite. I've been told that we no longer want descriptions for EV spreads with maximum investment in two offensive stats. Talk about Heatran's Speed tier in the overview.

Heatran's common teammates such as M-Charizard Y, Volcorona, and Volcanion all appreciate the Heatran's ability to trap and beat special walls they generally struggle with, mainly Chansey and Porygon-2. All of it's teammates also appreciate Heatran's ability to switch into ground type moves early game, and possibly longer. Others, such as Victini, Infernape, and Rotom-H all provide great ways to pivot, giving Heatran opportunities to either come in to trap and beat threats. All of Heatran's teammates appreciate Heatran's ability to switch in ground type moves with its air balloon as long as it stays intact. M-Charizard Y is Heatran's, and Fire's overall best support mon, with sun support. Rotom-H provides another ground immunity, which is even more important if Heatran loses it's balloon. Heatran's steel typing also means it isn't immediately threatened out by M-Diancie right away if it's balloon is intact, giving another check to another threat to fire, although a weaker one. This needs to be revamped a bit. I'll go over this in the second part of my check.

Stealth Rock can be run as well, either as your main rocker or more likely your 2nd rocker behind Torkoal or Infernape. Choice Scarf can also be ran with the move set Fire Blast / Earth Power / Flash Cannon / Hidden Power [Ice] Ice, but it faces competition from better scarfers Choice Scarf users such as Victini and Infernape Darmanitan. Infernape is a poor Choice Scarf user due to its mediocre offensive capabilities. Add Toxic.

**Water Types Bulky Water-types**: Heatran struggles to break bulkier water types, such as Gastrodon, Suicune, Swampert, and Rotom-W, the latter being able to pivot out of Magma Storm damage.

**Ground Types**: Once Heatran's Air Balloon is popped, it becomes vulnerable to the common threat of Earthquake, being forced out by all ground types faster than it, or even threats that just run ground coverage.

**Faster Threat Threats**: Pokemon such as M-Lopunny, Jolly Excadrill (if balloon is gone), Terrakion, and Landorus-I Landorus all out speed and force HEatran Heatran out immediately with the threat of a KO.

Tag me after implementing this, and I'll take one more look before stamping since it's somewhat late over here. For the second part of my check, I'll also go over the team options section in detail since that's the only part where I found substantial issues.

Also for this tidbit I was just naming better Choice Scarfers in comparison to Heatran, not all together. Nape isn't the best scarf but neither is Tran and scarf nape > scarf tran, so I feel it deserves the mention in the piece if you're speculating running scarf tran in general. just imo

Most of your information regarding what Heatran does for the team is good but the rest needs some work. I'll write a skeleton you can use below.
* Mega Charizard Y: sun support + threatens bulky Water-types + entry hazard removal.
* Choice Scarf users: Victini and Darmanitan can take care of faster threats such as... (also mention U-turn pivot support).
* Volcarona: late game setup sweeper that can also threaten bulky Water-types with Giga Drain.
* Infernape: lead Stealth Rock setter with Taunt, a good Speed tier, and STAB Fighting-type coverage.
* Torkoal: alternative Stealth Rock user and hazard removal that fits better on more balanced teams.
* Volcanion: Water-immune teammate that can threaten certain Water-, Fire-, and Ground-types.

* Rotom-H: talk about this at the end if you want but it's generally less viable than the others (C rank on VR).

Kinda want to restructure this again. The first line of this isn't wrong but I really do not like grouping the Chansey and Porygon2. (P2 is a defensive wall not special wall).

  • Physical Attackers in correlation to Porygon2. Talk about how Darmanitan and Victini needs sun to 2HKO porygon2 and how heatran sort of eases up the task
  • Choice Scarf Darm and Vict
  • Infernape
  • Special Attackers in x and y appreciate Heatran's ability to notably trap and stallbreak Chansey (don't need to list the moves).
