Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs superfan
Mochi Mayhem is just a classic-style Pokémon movie placed inside of a video game DLC, change my mind
In all seriousness, though, I've reached the point of inconsistent boredom- emphasis on the inconsistency part- with these games to the point where the extent of the fun I've had with both parts of the DLC is that I care more about running around mindlessly waiting for cool and rare stuff to show up on the map as opposed to enjoying what little engaging story is present here outside of Ogerpon's own backstory in The Teal Mask. That was a very long sentence, but what I'm trying to say here is that I and most other experienced fans aren't playing Pokémon for the story. If you want a Pokémon-like game with actually good writing, there are other franchises out there that have the added bonus of not being made by Game Freak. So, what does any of what I just said have to do with Mochi Mayhem? Long story short, I already know about all of the story spoilers for the parts of Scarlet & Violet I haven't actively played through yet, and that's specifically because I wanted to see the spoilers.
This... is a bit of a problem, as you could probably tell. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I feel much less guilty looking at spoilers and leaks for something I've been primed to believe will be underwhelming than something that I genuinely believe will be worth my time and effort to wait on because of the pre-established quality of the product. And we all know how the Switch era has fared in that department up to this point. Suffice to say, I felt more inclined to watch spoilers of this stuff before the so-called Epilogue even went live, and you know what really sucks? Is the fact that I was absolutely right. Despite being called as such, it doesn't feel like an epilogue to the DLC at all, feeling more like its own thing that just happens to include returning characters out of obligation because they weren't in the rest of the DLC. If you replace any of most of the characters with other characters in The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk's own stories, the dynamic of the story would naturally shift accordingly. But with this update, you could probably replace any of Nemona, Arven, Penny, Carmine, realistically anyone aside from Kieran with someone else, and literally nothing would change. Pecharunt wasn't really handled as thoroughly as well as I would have liked to see, either, but then again, I could say the same about the majority of Mythical Pokémon so at least then my disappointment with its lack of conclusive backstory and history with the Royal Three wasn't surprising.
I'll be back with an update post at a later point in time; I want to try and individually count how many times the word "Mochi" is said by a character in this update. This update reeks of the times when the Alola region lazily slapped the word "Ultra" and the letter "Z" onto almost everything instead of taking the time and effort to come up with original names, but as this is just a personal nitpick about this update, I can't be too strict about that. So far I've counted at least 20 uses of the word "Mochi" in the span of an update whose play length is only about an hour and a half long. For context, that means someone says the word "Mochi" at least once every four and a half minutes on average.
