Welcome to the Monotype Next Best Thing. This project strives to showcase and discover unique sets for Pokemon that can still fulfill a new and viable purpose, such as an anti-lead, lure, or just an undiscovered option in general. By stepping away from the standard sets, this project hopes to find sets that have undiscovered potential.

Each week, I or a Monotype council member will select a Pokemon that you'll be making and posting original sets for. There will be a five-day period to post your sets, followed by a two-day voting process, where you'll vote for which set you think is the best in that week. Voting for yourself is prohibited. Please realize that "original sets" refer to movesets that aren't used commonly in the tier, as well as not being in said Pokemon's analysis.

When posting a set, please keep in mind that we are looking for viable options, so strange and unviable sets such as Swords Dance Skarmory and physical Alakazam will be frowned upon, and simple changes to an already popular set, such as an item change, isn't really acceptable either, unless you have viable reasoning to back up the change. Please do not "reserve" sets.

Set by: Clair

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 248 HP / 148 Def / 96 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Slam
- Dragon Dance
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

"CroMalt is very self-sufficient and dgaf about status. Refresh DD sets are very similar, but RestTalk still has some advantages such as absorbing Sleep from Breloom / Moonguss, recovering HP + removing status in one turn. Body Slam > Return because you're a defensive set and the paralysis chance is super nifty"

Set by: -Voltage-

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def /252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tailwind
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power /Fire Blast
- Dark Pulse / Flash Cannon

"One of the biggest issues with Hydreigon is its disappointing base 98 Speed stat. So what if we could change that without having to give Hydra a scarf? Enter Tailwind, a move that doubles speed for 4 turns, and allows Hydreigon to double its already satisfying speed at 324 (after Max speed and Timid Nature) to 648. For reference, this means Hydreigon would only be outpaced by Hawlucha with a neutral/positive nature at +2, or Scolipede at +2."

Our current test subject is Scizor.

Just a bit of information, you actually have to explain why your set is good, as well as have proper formatting:

Pokemon @ Item
Ability:
EVs:
(insert Nature) Nature
- Move 1
- Move 2
- Move 3
- Move 4

You can also bold the changes to standard sets as seen above.

Banned deucer.
Hoopa-Unbound @ Life Orb
Ability: Magician
EVs: 224 Atk / 32 Def / 252 Spe OR 200 Atk / 56 Sp Atk / 252 Speed (Hasty nature)
Jolly Nature
- Hyperspace Fury
- Fire Punch/Thunderbolt
- Gunk Shot/Drain punch/Hyperspace Hole
- Thunder wave/Toxic

T
he purpose of this set is to be used on regular psychic teams but with more pokemon such as slowbro/Deo-D/Jirachi(body slam also works)/Cresselia etc running thunderwave to help mega-gard sweep as it can demolish so many types on its own with minimal team support (SR and speed control ). Thunderwave helps Hoopa-U cripple its checks by giving them a 25% chance to do nothing each turn as well as it helps vs more offensive teams where the speed control is greatly appreciated on both Dark and Psychic. Toxic is an alternative to cripple any wall which is not a steel type on the switch and also helps vs set up sweepers whom might be able to take advantage of hoopa based on its coverage choice (rof tho they all gonna die) as well as providing a nice move to pressure opposing status curers as toxic out PP'S all of them (16>8) and it also allows team mates to run other moves.
The first EV spread Maximises speed to outspeed or speed tie with all non scarfed Base 80's. Hyperspace fury is the standard kill all stab move and the remaining 2 coverage moves depend on your teams needs. Personally i prefer Fire punch and gunk shot as they help a lot vs steel, bug and grass (surprisingly victini might not be enough) and gunk shot allows it to massacre fairy as klefki is ruined by fire punch. Drain punch can be used for slight pseudo recovery and it hits steel types hard as well. The eves given first are to ensure that you are not kod by sucker punch at full health. Lastly If running thunderbolt then you can ko skarm/mandibuzz/ be an annoyance to flying as you hit like an 18 wheeler. On dark hyperspace hole can be used to nuke fighting teams.

TL;DR: run status to cripple walls/checks and sweep ez

Twix editing and tagging you to tell you that adding some samples in the OP could be beneficial as well looking through the OU/UBERS threads by the same name for more comprehensive thingamajiggies if you need to

I've edited in a few samples of OU sets in the OP. Thank you for the suggestion.

Hoopa Offensive Assault Vest
Hoopa-Unbound @ Assault Vest
Ability: Magician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Energy Ball/ Psychic/ Zen Headbutt
- Drain Punch
- Gunk Shot
- Hyperspace Fury

This set makes a dark vs fairy battle a lot easier to win if not just wins you the battle. Gunkshot can kill a multitude of fairys at full such as Sylveon, Azumarill, and Togekiss (after rocks). Assault vest allows you to live attacks from opposing fairies that happen to out-speed you (calcs down below). Drain Punch is for coverage while having some HP come back to support further use of your assault vest. Hyperspace Fury of course is the wonderful stab. Energy Ball can be used against special water sweepers or agianst bulky ground types that may hinder your team. You can opt for a secondary stab since HF only has 8pp. Physical Zen Headbutt goes for more power but Psychic hits special side and never misses. Its all in preference and team composition. I hope you like the set! Go try it out for yourself! I really like it in mono dark but mono psychic might appreciate it too!

252 SpA Floette-E Light of Ruin vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Hoopa: 236-282 (78.4 - 93.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Pixilate Mega Gardevoir Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Hoopa: 242-288 (80.3 - 95.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Mega Diancie Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Hoopa: 194-230 (64.4 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Hoopa-Unbound @ Leftovers
Ability: Magician
EVs: 172 Atk / 80 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Drain Punch
- Dark Pulse
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fire]

While this set may seem weird and very different at first glance, this is a very effective set. I call it Steel Breaker. The point of this set is to be used on monotype Psychic to break common steel cores such as Ferrothorn, Skarmory, Scizor, Heatran, Doublade, Ect. With Hp fire, you are able to 1HKO Scizor Mega and 2HKO Ferrothorn. With Substitute, you are able to play mind games with Bisharp, are you can outspeed it and 1HKO with drain punch. Sub also put's the Surprise factor in the place for steel teams, since they expect scarf are assault vest on Mono Psychic teams. Dark Pulse is to hit ghost type mons and it 2HKO's skarm, being the main stab on this set altogether. Very unaffective against Bug and Fairy, but does a fantastic job outside those types. I used this set and peaked at #5 feeding off of various steel teams.
