pressure Pressure PRESSURE (an OU warstory)

This is a battle I chose to warstory due to a unique sense of pressure and intensity that I never felt in a battle before. The battle was between my friend and fellow Ladderer, Enzo3254, and I. At the time (just out of interest) he was sitting in the mid 20’s on the Leaderboard, while I was just finding my way up from the Top 50. It was not my best battle in terms of early playing, allowing me to lose the advantage at the start of the battle. However, I did eventually pull myself together and start playing like a proper battler. This battle also taught me many lessons that allowed me to work me way into the top 15 soon after it occurred.

Enzo3254 sent out Azelf (lvl 100 Azelf).
Tarquinmacdonald sent out Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Tarquinmacdonald: Nooo.. :o

---
Okayyy, Starmie handles lead Azelf fairly well. If I Hydro Pump and get it to 1HP as it Stealth Rocks, then either switch to Gengar to take the explosion or risk a speed tie and rapid spin. It could be the rare ScarfAzelf, but I don’t want to bank on that. I will go for Hydro Pump which will just deal the most damage in whichever situation.

To all battlers inexperianced at laddering, this is what happens when you take unneccesary risks. Now I have both Salamence and Gyarados vunerable to Stealth Rock and I’ve lost a great special sweeper.
Now it comes to what to switch in. I don’t know Enzo’s current team, but I know he plays bulky offense. Therefore, he will probably send in a wall or tank to take my switch in, so I’ll send in Salamence, number 1 Wallbreaker!

This is a tricky situation. I don’t want to switch out of Suicune, as it will probably use this time to Calm Mind up. Also, with Starmie dead, the only pokemon that can land a super effective hit on Suicune is Gengar, who, being a Naive ScarfGar, lacks the raw power to hurt this thing. I decide that it may well not have Ice Beam and it’s unlikely to use it in this situation anyway, so lets try for the old Draco Meteor-Outrage one-two!

Rest is expected but it very useful for just immobilising Suicune, plus U-Turn has put Suicune in Draco Meteor Range. In hindsight, being less headstrong in this situation would have done me good, but instead I go straight for the D.Meteor, forgetting that the bulky, defensive player that is Enzo will almost ALWAYS switch...

Lucario punishes me justly for my sillyness. Once again I don’t want to switch out incase he predicts this and Sword Dances for a potential sweep. Besides, Salamence is rapidly becoming hideously fragile thanks to Stealth Rock. However, Lucario has low Hitpoints and will expect me to stay in for the KO, so I switch in Scizor to take what I hope will be an Extremespeed.

Okay, here I made a crucial mistake. I know now that Suicune isn’t running sleep talk, or it would have used it. I used Draco Meteor the last two times, and Enzo can only assume I shall do the same this time. However, I presume what I was thinking was that is he switched in a Blissey or something to take it, I could hit it harder with Outrage. I somehow forgot Enzo’s most obvious switch in though, Magnezone. The next turn shows my folly.

Well, he didn’t get lured into Thunderbolt but Flash Cannon did no real damage to swampert anyway. Now to get clever. His best switch in to Swampert is Salamence, so if I switch in Gengar to counter it, I will regain momentum. I just have to hope he won’t somehow predict this and Flash Cannon again, but with Swampert’s Earthquake threatening to kill Magnezone but miss Salamence, I find this unlikely.

Alternate Ending?
I have since wondered what would have happened if Focus Blast hadn’t missed. I hope Gengar would have been able to Thunderbolt Suicune before it set up, But I wouldn’t have been surprised if I had eventually lost this Ending. Strange how things work out.

Post what you think would have happened in this scenario :)

Good Points
  1. Getting myself together half way through the match and finally taking the initiative.
  2. Gengar safely switching in and killing Magnezone
  3. Gyarados not becoming a sand castle :)
  4. Hax is the new Karma :o

Bad Points
  1. Gengar for wearing Sunglasses
  2. Tyranitar was wearing even bigger Sunglasses
  3. My lack of predicition and lateral thinking in the first half of the match
  4. I only lead the match at the very start and end :P

This was a really nice read. There were nice predictions and you detailed your thought process well. I enjoyed it.

I thought it was a nice story. I like the dialouge in-between the attacks. Once agian, the stealth rocks become a horrible nusaince. Good battle though.

P.S. I would appreciate more stories =3

I hate how you both had to bank on misses to try and beat each other, but I guess it leads to a more intresting story

I really enjoyed this mate. The warstory was well written and had enough of your thought process in the comments to interest, but little enough to not bore. It's even better when it's a warstory about a team I know, so while reading I can consider what I would have done in that situation. If you have time, try and get some mini-sprites into the log at every turn, as it was a very fast paced battle and they might help the reader keep track. Nevertheless, a worthwhile and enjoyable read, thanks :).

EDIT: Lol, I should be doing that too x_x

I will try and put in sprite and health checks after every turn this evening :)
Firstly though, Physics revision :o

It was good with nice predictions and good plays. That is, until the end of the match, where the misses were the only thing that kept it alive. I dislike that because the match WAS sealed (at what, 3-0?), and was not nearly as close as it's made out to be.

Regardless, well read comments and pretty nice battle.

to Veedrock
The match was not sealed at the point of the first miss, it was 3-3 and Gengar still had the potential to kill Salamence and Suicune.
to All readers
I am sorry if the hax at the end dissapointed you all :S I guess I don't mind it simply because I don't mind hax and I felt that after both our misses, the match geared up for a very tense finish, so for me, the hax improved what would have been, otherwise, a soso battle.

Sorry if my warstory ending has annoyed you lol, i will try to avoid this next time XD

EDIT: To Seriin
I know what you mean about Starmie lol. I since rarely take that risk, as these battles have taught me how costly it can be. I now always switch to Gengar and hope they don't switch in Scizor. Neither method is great is it? XD

I don't quite understand the hax throwing people off of liking the story. Granted, you might not want to see it in a warstory, but it is important to show them in this very place. Focus Blast is going to miss, Stone Edge is going to miss. This risk for a high damage payout is part of choosing the move. Warstories that have these moves missing at pivotal points shows us that we can't expect them to work 100% and need to be prepared for an alternate outcome.

I found it to be a good story, save for losing your Starmie to the explosion that, judging by the commentary, you knew was coming.

Pretty nice warstory, I enjoyes the read a lot. Hey, hoping for more of this!! Also, hax is a part of this game, we need to learn about living with it. Thanks for the great warstory.

Pretty good warstory, I enjoyed it. I don't think the misses detracted much from the battle, if anything it reminds me of those depressingly familiar endgame situations where it all comes down to one crucial matchup.

Azelf used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Starmie used Hydro Pump.
Azelf lost 100% of its health.
Azelf hung on using its Focus Sash!
Starmie lost 10% of its health.
---
Azelf - 100%
Starmie - 90%
Small nitpick.
Good warstory and predictions.
The alternate ending is a reason Gengar deserves to be in the top 10!
Sad Lucario didn't do much >.>.

I actually enjoyed the way the hax effected the battle. I would have liked it more if Gyara died due to a miss on Suicune. This is only because i hate using moves with less than 100 accuracy. I believe if you want to seal your victory you can't rely on 80% stone edge or 70% Focus blast...Also because 80% on my pokemon works out to be more like 40% because of my terrible luck.

Excellently done! Hax is hax but it kept things interesting. In my opinion, the hax helped the story and made me want to read more.

Awesome Tarquin, thanks for the good warstory.

Lol, this reminds me of a battle where i was down 4-1 and won with Gyara... Dont you think we have the same Gyarados that sweeps in the end?

Donald, I thought this warstory was great but now you made me feel like I need to kick my battling up a notch with comments like "never been in so much pressure before". Hehe, maybe next time we battle we could have a sexy Vaporeon wars warstory :naughty:

xD

@ TheFourthChaser
Those 5 battles in a row were seriously tense xD. I seriously struggle versus Vaporeon :P.

I am glad somebody else found the karma-style hax to add to the warstory :). It brought the match to an equal standing, just a different one to the original scenario, I thought that complete change of pace was great.

@ ReyScarface
I am not sure, we may well run a similar Gyarados?
I run:

Gyarados @ Lum Berry
Intimidate
Adamant
EVs: 252 Att, 198 Spe, 60 Hp

-Bounce
-Waterfall
-Stone Edge
-Dragon Dance

My Gyarados is designed to set up against statusers like Celebi, Blissey and Togekiss, as well as absorb fast sleepers like Salac-Smeargle and OHKO in return xD

I find once the opponent has lost their electric attacker(s) or had them weakened to a +1 Waterfall KO range, they often try to Status poor Gyara :(
So I rub it in their face =D
