Resource PU Core Analysis Workshop v2

Approved by Magnemite | Primarily copied from -Grim who primarily copied from bludz who primarily copied the format from OU's Victim of the Week

Pokemon teams rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. Cores of pokemon are units within teams that are built specifically to take advantage of these synergies between pokemon. Many teams are built around such cores. The premise of this thread is to analyze cores by discussing threats to them and then potential partners. Hopefully this exercise helps you with your teambuilding process.

I will not necessarily be using cores from the Good Cores thread (though I may use a few), but I recommend you check it out if you are looking for a core to build around.

Procedure:

1. I will post a core comprised of 2 pokemon.

2. For the first 3 days after that post, posters will have the chance to post threats to the core.
Example: Stunfisk is a threat to the Volturn core of Raichu and Ninjask.

3. After the the first 3 days are up, posters will nominate potential partners to the core, keeping in mind the threats previously posted. This will last for 4 days.
Example: Grumpig is a potential partner for Leafeon as it checks Ice, Fire and Poison types that would threaten Leafeon, while bringing in physical attackers like Metang that would be set up on by Leafeon.

4. When the week is up, I will choose the top 2 partners to the core and put them in the OP. This is a subjective procedure so I will most likely consult other players – but not ones who made nominations in the thread. Please don’t be insulted if your nomination doesn’t make the OP. I will probably add in a Hall of Fame if this thread goes on for long enough.

Rules:

1. Please follow up your reservations in a timely fashion. I will allow 24 hours after a reservation to make the post. After the 24 hours is up, if you have not made your post then someone else may reserve that pokemon.

2. When the threats nominations period ends, I will no longer accept threats and will only be accepting partners to the core.

3. Please post only pokemon that are viable in PU. Preferably ones not listed lower than C rank in the viability rankings.

4. Each poster may only nominate one partner to a core. I would prefer you only post one threat as well but if many threats have been posted since your first post I may allow you to post a second threat.

5. When posting either a threat or a partner, explain yourself. Calcs are not necessary but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. Be descriptive so that other posters and I can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. Also please list a full set of the pokemon including its item, full moveset, EV spread, and nature. Feel free to comment and elaborate on others' threats or partners.

6. Please be respectful to others :)

Clarifications Regarding Threats & Partners:

A threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. A threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. More clarification is provided in the post below. Of course, the biggest threats counter both members.

When nominating partners, you are allowed to make suggested changes to the current sets of the members of the core.
Example: If nominating defensive roselia as a partner to the core of sdef Golem and Zebstrika it would be a good choice to change Golem to weakness policy.

First thread first core :D.

Politoed @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Encore
- Hidden Power [Electric]

Gourgeist-Super @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Seed Bomb/Leech Seed
- Will-o-Wisp
- Synthesis
- Foul Play

Rotom-Frost @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Blizzard
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute
- Pain Split

Pretty self-explanatory, Neither Politoed or Gourgeist can take a hit from LO Rotom-F's STAB moves and Rotom-F can get in on these 2 pretty easily with a double switch or coming in on an Ice Beam or Hidden Power from Politoed or from a Foul Play, Synthesis, or even Leech Seed from Gourg.

252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-F Thunderbolt vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 330-390 (88.9 - 105.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-F Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 507-601 (135.5 - 160.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Regice @ Life Orb
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 29 HP / 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast
- Rock Polish

Similar to RawMelon's choice, in which both mons benefit from having bolt-beam coverage. Regice outspeeds both Gourgeist and Politoed (depending on the set), and smacks them for super effective damage. Regice doesn't take much damage from a Politoed's scald or Gourgeist's Foul Play so you can often switch in or double switch into this core. Also Ice Beam doesn't miss which is an added bonus.

252+ SpA Life Orb Regice Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 234-278 (61 - 72.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Regice Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 439-523 (117.3 - 139.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Simisage @ Life Orb
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Spa / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Giga Drain
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power Ice

A cool set brought up by 5gen, Nasty Plot Simisage absolutely murks this core. +2 Giga Drain one-shots Politoed and +2 Hidden Power Ice has a chance to one-shot standard Gourgeist after rocks (meaning its an easy 2hko.) Basically, instead of being exclusively weak to BoltBeam coverage, the core is just weak to any strong special attackers with super effective coverage on both mons. These mons are relatively plentiful, including Ninetales, Zebstrika, Ampharos, and a few more. Finally, the team is super weak to Freeze-Dry.

Zebstrika @ Life Orb
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunderbolt

Zebstrika poses a threat to this core because with Sap Sipper it can come in free on Gourgeist's predicted Leech seed or Seed Bomb and can KO Gourgeist after Stealth Rock with Overheat. Thunderbolt deals a lot of damage to Politoed or it can Volt Switch on it to prevent any damage to itself.

252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Overheat vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 338-398 (90.3 - 106.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 276-328 (72 - 85.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Volt Switch vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 218-257 (56.9 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Thunderbolt deals a lot of damage to Politoed or it can Volt Switch on it to prevent any damage to itself.

252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Overheat vs. 252 HP / 104 SpD Gourgeist-Large: 296-351 (83.6 - 99.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 276-328 (72 - 85.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Js you are using gourgeist large not super in your calc but rly doesn't matter.
Anyway to those confused as to why I chose a core with a lot of threats is to hopefully gain some momentum for the thread with good activity.

Oh yeah my bad, changed.

Lapras @ Choice Specs
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 208 HP / 252 SpA / 48 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Freeze-Dry
- Surf

Ice Power

Lapras, similar to the other Ice-Type posts, has beautiful access to BoltBeam coverage or in this case stab Freeze-Dry which hits both targets for big damage although it has to be weary of Seed Bomb from Gourgeist-XL and Focus Blast from Politoed Lapras will remain a solid check and a soft-counter overall.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Lapras Freeze-Dry vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 284-336 (76.5 - 90.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Lapras Freeze-Dry vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 356-420 (95.1 - 112.2%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

Duosion @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Psychic
- Acid Armor

Duosion is able to absorb attacks from both Gourgeist and Politoed because of its Eviolite boosted bulk and then set up Calm Minds and Acid Armors freely. Magic Guard prevents burn damage from Will-O-Wisp and Scald, which are used by Gourgeist and Politoed, respectively, and at +1, Duosion is able to wear down both of them.

0 Atk Gourgeist-Super Seed Bomb vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Duosion: 63-75 (18.8 - 22.4%) -- possible 5HKO
+1 0 SpA Duosion Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 222-262 (59.3 - 70%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Politoed Scald vs. +1 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Duosion: 76-90 (22.7 - 26.9%) -- 33.2% chance to 4HKO
252+ SpA Politoed Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Duosion: 112-133 (33.5 - 39.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 0 SpA Duosion Psychic vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 177-208 (46.2 - 54.3%) -- 6.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Articuno @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Roost
- Freeze-Dry
- Hurricane
- Substitute

Articuno comes in pretty easily on both and beats them easily 1v1. Neither can break its sub outside of Choice Specs Politoed and Rock Slide Gourgeist

Leafeon is unreserved due to Azelfie going over the 24 hour reservation period, also 1 day left to submit threats to the core before we move onto partners.

Partners may now be posted for the core! For reference at the end I, with the council of a few others will decide the 3 partners for the core and have them in the OP underneath the core.

Grumpig @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 80 HP / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Taunt
- Shadow Ball / Thunder Wave

Grumpig makes a great addition to this core by helping check the Ice types that threaten Gourgeist and Toed. Also Pig can check things like Monferno and Ninetales which also pressure the core.

Camerupt @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Toxic

Camerupt is not only a great partner for this core because it is a good defensive Fire type, forming a Fire, Water, and Grass core, but also because it is able to check Ground and Ice types, which are threats to Gourgeist and Politoed. It also has access to Stealth Rock, which deals extra damage to Ice, Flying, and other Fire types, who threaten Gourgeist and Politoed. Articuno, who is one of the largest threats, has its health halved when it switches in on rocks. Gourgeist and Politoed are able to deal with Camerupt's threats, such as, Water types, Ground types, and Altaria.

Metang @ Eviolite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock / Bullet Punch

Metang helps the team against Ice-type pokemon. Meteor Mash is the main stab, Pursuit helps against attackers that try to switch out, Earthquake hits a good amount of mons neutrally or super effective, and Stealth Rock is Stealth Rock. Alternatively, Bullet Punch can be used as a good form of priority. The things that threaten Metang can generally give you a switch into one of the other members (Fire-Types let you switch into Politoed, Knock Off lets you switch into Gourgeist.)
