OU Salamence (Pseudo Analysis) (QC 2/2) (GP 1/1)

Felixx

I'm back.

[OVERVIEW]
Salamence's good overall stats aren't enough to save it from being an extremely mediocre Dragon Dance sweeper, leaving it heavily outclassed by the likes of Zygarde, Gyarados, and Mega Gyarados. Although its coverage is quite decent, it's still unable to handle certain defensive Pokemon depending on the chosen coverage move. Couple these negative traits with a weakness to Stealth Rock and an exploitable typing, and Salamence ends up falling flat in the OverUsed metagame.

[SET]
name: Flyinium Z
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Fly
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Stone Edge / Fire Fang
item: Flyinium Z
ability: Moxie
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Salamence can attempt to use a Dragon Dance set, as after a boost it can utilize Flyinium Z to break past walls such as Clefable and Mega Latias. Salamence's biggest competition by far is Zygarde, and although the latter tends to struggle with Grass-types, Zygarde is almost always a better, more consistent set up sweeper due to its immense versatility, good coverage due to Thousand Arrows, and access to Extreme Speed to pick off weakened threats. Furthermore, Gyarados can fulfill the role of a Moxie sweeper to more success due to its better typing and special bulk. Overall, there are many alternatives to Salamence, so don't use it unless your team desperately needs its Speed tier.

What is the point of this if "it's not a real analysis"?

Salamence is really overlooked by a lot of people and has a niche presence in OU over D-Nite and Gyara through its combination of higher offensive/speed stats and Moxie.

We want a singles entry for all pokemon on the dex so there's no blank pages. Every mon gets upwards of thousands of views per day, so we'd like to have something here rather than blank pages or a simple sample set. For OU's side of things, that means writing quick blurbs for the unranked UUBL Pokemon (Breloom, Conkeldurr, Diggersby, Mega Gardevoir, Porygon-Z, Salamence, Staraptor, and Xurkitree).

[OVERVIEW]
Salamence's good stats all across the board isn't enough to save it from being an extremely mediocre Dragon Dancer, leaving it heavily outclassed by the likes of Zygarde, both regular and Mega Gyarados, and even by fellow pseudo legendary Dragonite. (Dragonite arguably doesn't 'heavily outclass' Salamence bc Salamence has access to Moxie + higher Speed that allows it to snowball, so remove it) It's movepool is also overall lacking compared to it's competition, not gaining access to Fire Punch and the coveted Extreme Speed, making it much easier to handle (Salamence gets Fire Fang meaning it only really lacks priority, so emphasize not getting priority > movepool because apart from this it doesn't have bad coverage at all - Ground + Fire + Rock on top of STAB - mention instead that it can't break through all defensive Pokemon with just 3 moves). Couple these negative traits with a weakness to Stealth Rock and an exploitable typing, and Salamence ends up falling flat in the current OverUsed metagame.

[SET]
name: Use Literally Any Other Dragon Dancer (Flyinium Z)
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Fly

[SET COMMENTS]
- Salamence can attempt to utilize a Dragon Dance set, as after a boost it can utilize Flyinium Z to break past walls such as Clefable and Ferrothorn.
- It's higher speed tier and access to Moxie gives it a slight advantage over Dragonite, although it's worse bulk and lack of Multiscale makes setting-up much harder. (remove Dragonite and instead dedicate this point to Zygarde being a much better setup sweeper outside of being walled by Grass-types like Tangrowth due to the plethora of sets it can run + Thousand Arrows's coverage + priority)
- Furthermore, Gyarados can fulfill the role of a Moxie sweeper to more success, while Zygarde and Mega Gyarados don't require Z-Crystals to function, so overall, don't use Salamence over these alternatives unless your team desperately needs it's speed tier. (rephrase to only include Gyarados)

QC 1/2

Felixx

I'm back.
Did the above,

Slashed Stone Edge w/ Fire Fang, and replaced the Ferrothorn mention in the first sentence with Mega Latias to reflect this.

This is ready for QC #2!
