Project OU Next Best Thing - Cycle Last: Mega Latias (Voting)

sd + taunt, while defensive bulus usually sit around and do nothing all game this one might actually smash some bulky builds if paired with magnezone.

Sorry Egor, been hella busy as some stuff hit me out of the blue.

Gonna vote for SD Megahorn. Specifically for the buginium z set, over the Occa set.

Unfortunately I messed up all the timelines of the Cycle so the project is going to work by the new schedule: every new Cycle will start at Monday, while voting phases of them will begin at Thursday. Anyway, the Cycle 8 is over, and by results of the voting, the winner of this Cycle is Rockium Z by Ceros . Congratulations! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. And now it's the time to begin the next Cycle!

Cycle Nine - Tornadus-T

Since the last three Cycles were Tapu cycles, you probably expected Tapu Lele this Cycle, but it was me, Dio! but I decided to not subject it because Tapu Lele was already subjected in the previous Next Best Thing. So meet Tornadus-T! Not much to tell about it, you guys know that this is the best and the most consistent Defogger in the metagame courtesy of its high Speed, decent bulk and typing, and Regenerator. Tornadus-T is also able to put a heavy dent in the opposing team thanks to Z-Moves, and various utility moves like Knock Off and U-turn further add on Tornadus-T's role compression. Tornadus-T is usually seen as an offensive pivot with a Z-Crystal or as a more defensive with Rocky Helmet. However, I think there are other cool sets. Show them here guys!

Tornadus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 12 SpA / 248 Spe (customizable)
Hasty / Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower / Focus Blast / Heat Wave / Sludge Bomb / Grass Knot
- U-turn
- Knock Off

An old threat returning from ORAS, AV Torn actually saw a game this WCoP (https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen7ou-445420) as a generic special pivot with Regenerator. At the cost of no longer switching into Mega Medicham and losing to Scarf Kartana locked into Smart Strike, you have a pivot into special attacks such Greninja’s Dark Pulse, Latias’ Ice Beam, etc. While it doesn’t have the power of LO or Z, it can still chunk these mons pretty hard or pivot out. The fourth slot also offers some flexibility; Superpower and Focus Blast hit Heatran, both Tyranitars and Ferrothorn, Heat Wave is an emergency button against Scizor and non-scarf Kartana that doesn’t risk a miss, Sludge Bomb smashes the Tapus and potentially spreads poison and Grass Knot hits Washtom for nice damage.

Tornadus-Therian @ Choice Specs
Ability: Regenerator
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- Focus Blast
- U-turn

110 Special Attack isn't bad per say, so i gave Tornadus-Therian a Choice Specs with 3 Atacks and U-Turn, the latter of the 4 Attacks are used for gaining Momentum and getting Health back via Regenerator.
Hurricane is its only but preferrable STAB, which hits like a truck with a Specs boost, same goes to Heat wave, as heat Wave hits Ferrothorn harder, Heat Wave
also takes care of Celesteela and Focus Blast catches Heatran.

Some Calcs:
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 288-340 (90.2 - 106.5%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 128+ SpD Heatran: 268-316 (69.4 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 332-392 (102.7 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Heat Wave vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 202-238 (50.8 - 59.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 229-271 (91.2 - 107.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Diancie-Mega: 160-189 (66.3 - 78.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Diancie-Mega: 110-129 (45.6 - 53.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Heat Wave vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 364-432 (103.4 - 122.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Life Orb Mixed

Tornadus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- Superpower
- Taunt / Defog

Life Orb can be used instead of a Z-Crystal if you want to opt for more consistent global damage rather than a one-time nuke. This mixed attacker set is most commonly seen on rain teams where the Z-move slot is more often than not already taken by the likes of Magearna, Manaphy or Azumarill and Defog is usually used by Pelipper and where it appreciates the additional damage from Life Orb. Superpower is used as it nails specific threats. For instance, Life Orb-boosted Superpower hits regular Tyranitar as well as Mega Tyranitar very hard, which would otherwise like to come in on Tornadus-T and are a nuisance to rain. It also hits Heatran quite hard which, like Tyranitar, would like to come in and set up rocks.

4 Atk Life Orb Tornadus-Therian Superpower vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 416-494 (108.6 - 128.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
4 Atk Life Orb Tornadus-Therian Superpower vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 322-380 (84 - 99.2%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
4 Atk Life Orb Tornadus-Therian Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 213-252 (65.9 - 78%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Protect SlowTurn

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 8 SpA / 248 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Protect

I have been using this on T-spikes team. This does two things normal torn sets don't.

1. Scout for scarf/Z-moves: Determine Greninja sets. Take lando Z move. Take torn Z move. Scout Koko. U-turn out if they get stuck choice locked.

2. Slow-turn on other Torn-T.

You could go lefties but then you don't punish u-turn as much. Other option is drop u-turn for Toxic but imo you lose too much utility doing that.

Toxic Pivot

Tornadus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- Toxic
- Defog / U-Turn

Tornadus-Therian is usually kept at bay by the likes of Zapdos, Rotom-W, Gastrodon, and similar mons that resist Hurricane and/or are really fat. Toxic addresses this by putting its checks on a timer and notably avoiding paralysis from Static. Honestly there's almost nothing in the meta that can switch into both Knock Off and Toxic, and parters such as Greninja and Landorus-Therian pressure those that can (Pex, Mega Tar, Gliscor). Defog helps Torn-T support the team but if hazard control is already taken care of then U-Turn is nice for pivoting. Heat Wave is also nice for steels like Ferrothorn and Celesteela.

If you're like me and really hate Zapdos then I recommend this.

Torn vs the VR:

Bulky Pinch Berry

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Aguav Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 88 HP / 32 Atk / 164 Def / 8 SpD / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Defog
- U-turn
- Heat Wave
- Acrobatics

So the use of Aguav berry lets you take advantage of this torn's ev spread, which lets you take a protean gren ice beam and a mmedi ice punch at max and either heavily damage or defog on the former and ohko the latter. Unfortunately, even with regenerator, you wouldn't be able to sufficiently defog since you take 25% every time you switch in to rocks and you aren't going to be able to take shit at like 33%. The aguav berry gives you an ample amount of hp to continue your role as bulky pivot/defogger (giving you 83ish% factoring in regen recovery on switch) while letting you take weaker pursuits. Another advantage of this set is that it lets you make use of this torns ev spread without dying to weather damage.

Tornadus-Therian @ Charti Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 228 HP / 88 Def / 192 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Defog

This is a set that TPP used against me once, and since then, I've started using it on select teams too. The basic premise is that Tornadus-T can take a Continental Crush from Garchomp and Landorus-T and retaliate with Hidden Power Ice relatively safely thanks to Charti Berry. It's also nice to scout what Choice Scarf Landorus-T might lock into one time.

Taunt + Knock Off Stallbreaker

Tornadus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Def / 192 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off/Defog
- U-turn
- Taunt

The Premise (a general description):

This set aims to annoy Stall as well as Offense with fast taunts that prevent passive mons such as Chansey from using recovery or status moves and against Offense can disrupt suicide leads as well as set up mons. With 64 Defense EV's this Torn will never be 2 hit KO'ed by sash exca's rock tomb and can proceed to taunt it and then u-turn on it to break it's sash, pretty much the same also applies to lando. Stall on the other hand is always forced into a disadvantageous where they have to pick whether or not a wall get's taunted or loses it's item to knock off Chansey, Pex, Ferro and Gliscor all get denied recovery by this set and are then either crippled by knock off or chipped by hurricane. Defog can still be ran if absolutely necessary but Torn loses a lot it's potency against stall.

Set Details:

192 Speed Ev's and a Timid nature Torn still outspeeds Serperior with the remaining points being put into Bulk to guarantee a 3 hit KO from sash exca's rock tomb as well as help check lando choice band bulu and kartana. Be aware that this Torn will always be outspeed by scarf Magnezone. Rocky Helmet makes chip rack up more easily against the likes of Lando Chansey and Ferrothorn.

Team Partners:

Since this set usually forgoes to run Defog other Defoggers are mandatory, Tapu Fini and Gliscor come to mind for their ability to check heatran which this torn struggles against Fini being especially notable for it's own ability to further stallbreak. Because this set generally struggles against steel types Fire Types like Heatran or means of trapping such as Magnezone or Alolan Golem are appreciated.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-944678998 <- in this replay i'm lacking knock off but torn is still a severe disruption to chansey steela and medicham

252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Rock Tomb vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Tornadus-Therian: 150-178 (41.4 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Landorus-Therian Rock Tomb vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Tornadus-Therian: 158-188 (43.6 - 51.9%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO <-pretty decent odds

252 Atk Kartana Smart Strike vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Tornadus-Therian: 163-193 (45 - 53.3%) -- 33.2% chance to 2HKO <- significantly lesser chance to 2HKO

248+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Tornadus-Therian in Grassy Terrain: 269-317 (74.3 - 87.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO <- lives at a more comfy health range which helps with regenerator

Choice Band Tornadus-T

Tornadus-Therian @ Choice Band
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icy Wind/Secret Power
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Facade

General idea
Here we have a physical-oriented Tornadus-T with the aid of the Choice Band. Although the Choice items prevent their holder from switching moves, Tornadus-T has access to U-turn, which is really useful to scout the opponent's switch-ins.
U-turn is mandatory to keep the momentum, whereas Knock Off + Facade are here for coverage.
The 4th moveslot is a filler: you can opt for Icy Wind or Secret Power.
Too bad that we don't have Brave Bird as STAB.
Icy Wind with no investment and a hindering nature is still almost a 2HKO on Defensive Landorus-T (guaranteed after SR):
0- SpA Tornadus-Therian Icy Wind vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 188-224 (49.2 - 58.6%) -- 61.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Calcs:
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja: 294-348 (103.1 - 122.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias-Mega: 164-194 (45 - 53.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian U-turn vs. 56 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 200-236 (65.5 - 77.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 52 Def Mew: 250-296 (62.3 - 73.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Victini: 264-312 (77.4 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Blacephalon: 440-518 (178.1 - 209.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Marowak-Alola: 244-288 (75.5 - 89.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Team(mates) support
If you use Secret Power you want to have one Tapu on your side in order to choose more consistently the typing and the secondary effect of this move. (https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Secret_Power_(move))

Sky Plate Torn-T (Yeah ik sharp beak should be used incase u get tricked + flinged but fuck that sky plate sounds better)

Tornadus-Therian @ Sky Plate
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Defog
- Taunt / [Filler]
- U-Turn / [Filler]

Credit to Paycard for this set, I think I saw him laddering with it. This thing is a monster under rain where your hurricanes are perfectly accurate. Max investment along with the sky plate boost make it a lot harder to check and it is unexpected.

- 252 SpA Sky Plate Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 109-129 (35.8 - 42.4%) -- 88.7% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
- 252 SpA Sky Plate Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 127-150 (36 - 42.6%) -- 94.9% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
- 252 SpA Sky Plate Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 208-246 (52.7 - 62.4%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Bulky Z-Move Pivot

Tornadus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- U-turn
- Defog
- Taunt / Knock Off

Basically, this is your regular pivot set, but instead of Lefties or Rocky Helmet, it uses Flyinium Z. Its edge over Leftovers or Rocky Helmet is that it guarantees you a hit, to prevent a Kartana sweep for example, and its edge over Wide Lens is that the extra power can help you muscle through someone like Venusaur.

Let's look at some calcs:

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Venusaur-Mega: 296-350 (81.5 - 96.4%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Venusaur-Mega: 176-210 (48.4 - 57.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

There's no such thing as a guaranteed 2HKO with 70% accuracy; you have a 49% chance of hitting two in a row.

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 288-339 (101 - 118.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 171-202 (60 - 70.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Someone like Greninja can be deadly for Torn-T. Offensive Torn gets OHKOed by Specs Hydro Pump after rocks, whereas a defensive build has a 50% chance of living it. But defensive builds need Flyinium Z to be able to take Gren out before it gets hit again.

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tapu Bulu: 320-380 (93.2 - 110.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock, Leftovers recovery, and Grassy Terrain recovery

4 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tapu Bulu: 192-228 (55.9 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock, Leftovers recovery, and Grassy Terrain recovery

Again, no such thing as a 2HKO with 70% accuracy, especially against someone who heals as fast as SDef Bulu. And why use a defensive Z-variant over offensive Tornadus?

248+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian in Grassy Terrain: 290-342 (96.6 - 114%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

248+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian in Grassy Terrain: 290-342 (80.1 - 94.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

If you don't know what Bulu you're switching into, only defensive builds can live Band Wood Hammer

These aren't necessarily the best examples of the utility and power of defensive Z-Tornadus, but I feel they adequately demonstrate my point: you have the survivability and flexibility of our standard pivot builds, but with massively increased reliability in the form of a guaranteed hit, and the ability to take out dangerous threats when necessary.

Stall Tornadus

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Defog
- Heat Wave
- U-turn

This set can fit on stall, but you need a bit of luck for it to check offensive Heatran. Magma Storm has trash accuracy and low pp, meaning you can abuse regenerator to stall out pp for Magma Storm. U-turn let's you switch out if you get hit by Magma Storm, and switch to something else, like Sableye (which can't be trapped in virtue of its typing).

Anywho, the given speed investment allows you to outspeed base 110s. The defense investment allows you to avoid the OHKO from Kartana's unboosted Breakneck Blitz. Heat Wave OHKOs Kartana, and has more accuracy than hurricane. Speed boosting Blace fails to OHKO with its z move, and is 2HKOed by foul play (OHKOed after rocks). Blace without hp/def investment is OHKOed by foul play.

Torn can also serve as a soft check to Gren (and can defog spikes, unlike Chansey) and banded Bulu. You'll want to scout for what move they lock into first, if possible. You can use charti berry to ease this somewhat, in which case you can check rockium Lando and Garchomp. This means you can use something other than Zapdos or Avalugg as your other hazard remover, like mew, which can better check Heatran.
