Hey everyone, with the start of SPL7 I thought it would be a great idea to create a SPL megathread to discuss everything that has to do with NU in this upcoming SPL. This thread should be a great place for discussion on recent matches, who are the biggest threats in SPL, and who will emerge victorious with the best SPL record? I will continue to update this thread with Player Records, Replays, and just other general information, so look forward to that! With that said, this thread should not be a place to shit talk other players, or just negative discussion in general, and any of this will be met with swift punishments from the moderation team.

just some thoughts
  • i think we can all agree that 10k was way too much for meta rofl
  • shanecool :[ dw bud stick around till midseason you'll land somewhere
  • half of the playerbase is playing in their first spl, so some of those first matches will come down to who can take the pressure of a big tournament
other than that just excited for the season to get underway and to see some quality matchas :]

I guess I shall give my thoughts!

[CONG] soulgazer - 13K (retain) - SG has the experience and playing ability to win, for sure. I think he is even fairly knowledgeable of the current meta, but the question is if he can comfortably build (or used Cased's teams..) at an SPL level. Based on the past, I think he will fair well, but nothing's certain.

[RUIN] Jarii - 3K - Sort of surprised he got picked, to be honest. With that said, he knows what he's doing and has a lot of tier knowledge. The million dollar question is if he can play at the level necessary to win games and if he can avoid being too predictable while preparing for an opponent. He doesn't seem to have much experience playing in an environment like this, so I think there's a chance he's in over his head, but only time will tell.

[BIGS] rozes - 10K - If you told me a month ago that my team (Bigs) would go 10k on Rozes (metaphysical), then I'd call you a crazy liar. Over that time, though, Rozes has proven to me that he's a very capable player - building and playing wise. Obviously, I'm biased in his favor, but I think that his ambitious playing and building in conjunction with some positive support he will be receiving will make up for his lack of experience and make him a worthwhile pick-up.

[FLCN] Can-Eh-Dian - 4K - For 4k, he's a fine player. He lacks the experience and the creativity when it comes to building, but he still is capable of getting the job done and playing at a decent level. I'd say he's right in the middle of the pack, maybe slightly towards the lower end, but he can play his way up higher (or lower) depending on how he handles the SPL environment.

[SCTR] Realistic Waters - 8.5K - I've heard a lot of hype for this guy and I think there's a good reason why - he's knowledgeable, he builds at a high level, and he plays at a high level. If I recall correctly, he had a strong NUPL and I think he has potential to continue that success into SPL, but he has to turn it up another notch or two. Probably someone who I would rate right around the middle of the pack.

[TGRS] Blast - 10K (retain) - Blast did well last year, to the surprise of many, and I expect similar results this year. I think that the playerbase and added experience will play even more into his advantage, so the chap Tigers retain (after trade) should be giving them solid results.

[CRYO] Teddeh - 11K - Teddeh, like Blast, did well last season after hitting his groove and, like Blast again, I expect good results. I think he has a bit higher of na upside than Blast, but he has to watch out as he will have a target on his back after his long winning streak to end out last year. Overall, one of the top NUers in the field if he plays his best.

[SHRK] Cased - 16K - Full of creativity and innovation, Cased is back for his third stab at SPL NU. I expect him to be near the top of the pack again, but with a bit of competition up there. Needless to say, experience and knowledge should carry him a long way, so expect a positive record and good overall showing from Cased.

[RAID] iplaytennislol - 3K
[RAID] Kiyo - 3K - Not sue which of these two will play, but they're both a bit below average in this pool due to lack of experience and consistent performances in the past. I feel like Kiyo is a tad better (tennis can easily compete though) than Tennis, so he is a bit more likely to start. With that said, both of these guys have their work cut out for them, but if they help each other and get help from FLCL and potentially even Hack, then I can see them scraping together some victories.

[WOLF] Laurel - 3K - A bit of a question mark in NU, but he put in a strong showing in UU last year and in some test games leading up to SPL before the season, so I set the bar high for Laurel. He's probably still the least experienced in the tier, but that doesn't mean he won't do well given his high ceiling as a player, so we will have to see how he handles this situation and if he does well.

Bold predictions: Steelix will see above 50% usage and Sceptile will see above 33% usage.

Potential midseason pick-ups for NU: Shanenghoul, Raseri, Vileman, Hootie, and HJAD

Finch Ranks
1) Cased
2) Teddeh
3) Soulgazer
4) Blast
5) Rozes
6) Realistic Waters
7) Can-Eh-Dian
8) Laurel
9) Kiyo (iplaytennislol)
10) Jarii

Due to recent events, we're going to keep this thread closed for a couple days. Everyone is a bit heated right now and it'd be nice to keep that kind of stuff out of open venues.

Hi, I'm re-opening this thread because it has a lot of potential to spark some great discussion among the community, provided we act like adults and think before we post.

As a general rule here are some things that are ok and some things that are not ok to do in this thread.
Okay:
-discussing potential roster spots and why you think they'd be a good pick
-discussing potential matchups for week 1 and how you expect them to play out
-discussing a players overall caliber when providing evidence to support your claims
-discussing whether or not a player was a good pick with supporting evidence

(in general if your posts lack substance or any actual reasoning behind them they're probably not good ones)

Not Okay:
-making a post simply because you think you'll get likes
-posting one-liners that do not contribute to discussion
-personally attacking another user
-disagreeing with another user and not providing evidence to suppport your claims
-discussing any deleted posts or infractions that may come as a result of breaking a rule, if you have a problem with it talk with the moderator in question or another forum mod

Overall your posts should be worth reading, and have some substance. If you're posting to get likes you're doing it wrong. I know this is a fun and exciting time for the community but being rude to each other and making posts that don't contribute to discussion are really detrimental to the strides we've made in the right direction.

You can consider this your warning, think before clicking "post reply". Any further "shitposting" will be swiftly met with an infraction.

Hi going to post likely week 1 matchups and my thoughts on them :o

Jarii vs Bouff / Laurel

Unless Jarii gets in a lot of prep and learns how to play NU at a SPL level this is going to be a very one sided match up whoever he plays. The problem is Jarii doesn't really have that many people on his team that can really help with building for NU which is going to be a very difficult considering the levels of experience the Wolfpack has in SPL as well as NU. Both Laurel / Bouff have been playing a lot of NU recently and if they can come up with a good team between them and Omfuga this won't be a hard match up.

Teddeh vs Realistic Waters

Both amazing players and this is probably the closest matchup out of all of the ones week 1. I have to give the upper edge to Teddeh though, as he's played in SPL before and is coming off an amazing record + win streak from last SPL. However Waters is a great builder + player, so if he puts in the time I think he could easily take this match.

Soulgazer vs Can-eh-dian

Soulgazer is the first of the veteran NUers, this being his 3rd SPL. He has a lot of experience at playing NU at the highest level and I don't think its going to just stop now. While Can is a great player + builder, he doesn't even have close to the experience SG has.

Cased / Frizy vs Blast

If Cased is allowed to play, I don't think he's going to repeat what happened last SPL and Rock Polish on a Seismitoad again, and will be very motivated to start off this SPL well as "the most expensive lower tier player". However Blast will be very motivated to show that he can be Cased without aid from a misclick. However if Cased ends up getting banned from playing, Blast should have a fairly easy match up against Frizy or whoever is subbed in to NU in place of Cased.

rozes vs kiyo / iplaytennislol

I'm happy to be in SPL despite what everyone says about it. I know I will be the underdog in every match I play, I will just do my best and see what happens.
Have won more on paper unbeatable matchups.
My week 1 predicts:

Teddeh vs Realistic Waters:
This is one the best matches we are going to see in NU this week (maybe even the best one for a couple of weeks). This one will be really close, I go Teddeh mainly because this is Waters first SPL and then immediately vs the one that has the best win loss ratio of last SPL in NU and he will have alot of pressure on him while Teddeh already know how it is to play in SPL.

Soulgazer vs Can-eh-dian:
Soulgazer is an very good player, has played 2 SPL's, knows how to play under alot of pressure. Same thing with Waters I think it's really difflecult for Can-eh-dian to begin with such an hard match up in his first SPL.

Cased / Frizy vs Blast:
Blast had an incredible run last SPL what he brings with him this SPL, that convidence would help him so much in these kind of match ups. This one will be very close but I think Blast will take it home.

rozes vs kiyo / iplaytennislol:
This matchup is really difflecult, Rozes has alot of potential, Kiyo and Tennis have so much experience in NU together tho. Something what maybe would be the key in this match up is Finchinator on Rozes part. Finch knows how to play under pressure and can teach Rozes what is takes to win matches in big tournaments. Otherwise I think it would be really hard for Rozes to beat That IplayKiyolol core.

Gl to everyone this SPL and have an Merry Christmas!

Disjunction's Power Rankings:
  1. Everyone- you're all special and deserve the best :toast:
I think the two players I, and probably a good many others, are looking forward to watching play the most are rozes and Jarii. Promoted by completely opposite sides of the coin, but very similar in exposure/experience, these are the only two players that were were picked up that started playing NU during ORAS. Hell, if I remember correctly, they were both introduced to the competitive scene through the tournaments room on PS. The biggest difference between these two that will define their respective records will be the amount of support they're able to get and how well they prepare. In a season of NU underdogs, I'm looking forward to seeing how the underdogs of the underdogs grow as players.

Also, I'm just saying, but the raiders will be extremely threatening in NU if Kiyo and tennis actually work together. Both of them will probably hate me for saying this, but one of them is a more solid builder and the other is a more creative player, in my honest opinion. They'd be a terrifying core in that regard, but team tours are only a team event to a certain extent. Both of them want to break out and make a name for themselves, I'm sure.

May aswell do some ranks before the arsenal match starts :D

1) Teddeh - You can't go into a tournament expecting someone else to do better than you, right?

2) Blast - he's been active all year, had a seriously good record last year, excellent player and is really great at this tier, I expect him to pull off similar results as last year.

3) Cased - Idek if he's allowed to play, but if he is, he's my third rank. He's an excellent tour player, but I think he'll try a little too hard to innovate in some weeks, whether that may be a good or a bad thing. Nevertheless, he's been out of it for a little while, but looking forward to seeing what he can do. If he manages to get up-to speed, he can definitely outplay most opponents who were drafted.

4) SoulGAYzer (hehe) - This man is washed up and has barely played all year round. But that doesn't take away the fact that he's got a well sick record in NU innit for past spl's. However he struggles with building as he often relies on cased / flcl for teams. From this, since neither (as far as I know) flcl or cased have been around much all year, he may have to struggle in this department and hence may end up going back to his old standard builds, but definitely interested in seeing how well he can do.

5) Realistic Waters - If this man can handle the pressure of spl and refuse to choke, he's one of the best around for NU. I can expect a good record if he settles well, but it will depend how he sits mid season. Nevertheless, I can see him doing the best out of the fresh NU blood so far.

6) Tennis / Kiyo - I'm ranking kiyo / tennis 6th mainly because of tennis, ngl. I've not really seen a lot of kiyo so I find it hard to judge, but since I have been testing with tennis leading up and realising how he plays, i know his builds will be solid with kiyo / flcl's help and tbh the extra added pressure of 2 NU guys on this team will make the prep for each week super high for the fear of losing the #1 spot. if they can work together as well, they can achieve well and I would like to see it work in all honesty. However, it can also go the other way, where they will ultimately fight for themselves and steal the spotlight of glory by taking the raider's nu spot. Shall be interesting to see if they can get along all 9 weeks.

7) Jarii - Now I may be called biased for this, but this is just from first-hand experience. With a reputation like Jari's going into spl, where everyone is thinking he'll be the worst player, I can see that working in his favour. He will work extra-hard to prep, counter-team, think about his plays, ultimately try harder than any of the opponents he may play. For this reason alone, I know he'll surprise people with how he does.

8) Rozes - A lot of people have predicted rozes to do better, i'm not 100% sure purely from my own experiences and looking at tours at how they are. I'd like to see a similar amount of productivity as jari, but i feel with the extremely high price tag on his head with a lot of expectation for him to do well, it may work in the opposite effect as it may add the extra pressure for him to do worse, than someone like jari who isn't expected to do well and isn't spl proven. Only time will tell, but I can see this being a huge factor going into these weeks.

9) Can-eh-dian - I'd have liked to have ranked you higher because I know you're a good player, but I can see more potential in other NU'ers going into spl, with no disrespect to how you may play. I think this may work in your favour however, as people may not see you as a threat, but I believe with the inconsistent amounts of activity, i can't rank you higher than more active players.

10) Laurel / Bouff - Primarily don't play NU as their main tier, so they're already a step behind every other player in this tier. However both talented players, but will suffer when it comes to team building and knowing sets that other people may use. i would have liked to see another NU player support either one of these players like shaneghoul / a builder that knows the tier as both of these players are very good at reading the games they play, but alas no. Expecting something average at best from this team.
